>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. dan: reporter: pandemic we have been suffering from an epidemic of traffic fatalities in our city. ama: 20 feet -- traffic fatalities on the streets of san jose at so far this year. today, they discussed what is being done to save lives. good evening, i am ama daetz. dan: san jose city officials outlined plans to give the streets safe including aplenty is automated speed enforcement cameras. ama: zach fuentes has the details. reporter: center road was considered to be one of the most dangerous in the city. between were killed or seriously injured from traffic accidents.

last year the the project that did things like add more protected biplanes and build up --sidewalk from drivin. similar measures were added in busy corridors. with 28 traffic fatalities in just the first three months of the year, city officials admit more has to be done. >> traffic related fatalities have outpaced our crime related deaths for several years now. this is an issue that can be prevented. reporter: the city announced zero initiative. they've identified 17 priority quarters, like the ones on center road. the mayor says one of the key problems -- solutions will be adding better lighting. >> 75% of our deaths since 2021 have been happening at night. lighting is key.

reporter: he says road improvements alone are not the only solutions. it is important to staff the police department, especially in traffic enforcement where there are 12 empty positions. the mayor says he will also be pushing in sacramento to get automated speed enforcement in san jose. speeding drivers caught on camera will get a fine. a message from those most at risk on the roads. >> watch out for people on bikes. ama: as covid cases decreased, people return to the office and gas prices keep climbing. they spoke about the agencies efforts to increase safety. he says there has been a decline in crime thanks to the police officers. those specialists carry narcan to treat overdoses and are paired with the bart police officer on every ride. >> when we are patrolling stations, we pay attention to

dan: less than an hour ago, a group of teachers say they will spend another night sleeping in headquarters in an ongoing dispute over paycheck issues. they say a new payroll system led to hundreds of workers not receiving their paychecks since january. the district says it has added staffed to its payroll department to investigate and fix the problems. ama: in the north bay, today marks day five of the teacher strike. even after he did school board meeting last night, no deal has been reached. dan: as liz explains, it is creating a major disruption for students, most of whom are staying home from school. reporter: through honks, -- chants and

members showed their support for teachers. now on day five of their strike and demand a better pay. >> day five, we have to stick to it. reporter: the districts is all but 10 of the roughly 300 teachers have joined the strike. they had to bring in administrative staff to fill positions and are ending school days early. 90% of students have opted to stay home. 1500 students go to rancho cotati high school. only a handful have been showing up for class. those who do come have been told to hang out in the gym and do catchup work since there's not enough teachers to go to class. this video from a student shows how empty it is inside the gym. at the school board meeting, frustrated students begged the board to reach a deal. >> i see no point in continuing going to school if i'm going to set on the bleachers and do nothing. reporter: teacher say the disruption will help students in the long run.

they're asking for a 14% pay raise over the next three years. >> i feel like a total fool. all my colleagues and friends feel foolish that we have to beg on the street for a livable wage. reporter: dr. perez is the superintendent. >> are you willing to meet the teachers where they want you to meet them? >> we will do what we can to get as close as possible. and also be able to remain physically solid -- fisc solid. reporter: you don't expect you will be able to give them that 14%? >> i don't know at this point. reporter: the teachers say they will continue to strike. >> are members are fired up. -- our members are fired up. ama: teachers in the mount diablo unified school district to buffer strike. the union says 92% of the members voted to walk-off.

ama: gas prices continue to soar across california. the state hit a new average high today at 5.77 dollars per gallon. gas in napa is the most expensive in the bay area, at $5.91 per gallon. dan: as prices at the pump client, uber is passing the price on to consumers. writers will pace -- fuel surcharge on every trip and uber eads order. the fees range from $.35 to $.55, versus 100% of that money will go directly to the workers.

the surcharge will last for at least two months, and company will reassess. ama: the soaring gas prices are taking a toll on families with critically sick children traveling to and from bay area hospitals. tara campbell found a note -- local nonprofit that is hoping -- hoping to fit the bill. reporter: a walk and a brief break for two mischa dominguez. most of her days are spent with her newborn son. >> it's really hard. i have to be strong for all of us. reporter: davies, the youngest of three sons was born with a condition requiring life-saving surgery to allow him to breathe. >> some metal plates and rods. after the surgery, they would distracted for 12 days. reporter: she has hundreds of miles from her family, her husband makes the three point 5 hour drive when he can. -- three point 5 hour drive when you can.
