moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc memorial for a 13-year-old boy hit and killed while riding his bicycle. he was on his way to school and blocks away. thank you for joining us. let's get right to abc7news reporter amanda del castillo at the scene of the tragic collision. >> at the busy intersection of el camino riau and grand road and mountain view, the sound of racing cars was met with silent reflection thursday. during the morning, but 13-year-old boy was hit while riding his bicycle. he died at the hospital. >> he was trying to get to school. that is the hardest thing. >> around 8:15, they learned about a crash when a cyclist in a large transport truck. sky 7 was overhead. you see the travel truck in the rightmost lane. the driver stayed on scene,

describing him as cooperative. he's currently not facing any charges and don't believe drugs, alcohol, or speed were factors. cyclists say the intersection is known to be dangerous. >> it is the most brutal intersection i have been in in my life. people completely ignore you, especially from here. >> we asked about issues at the intersection. >> i don't want to equate those issues pertain to this incident. i can't confirm it at all. but we have been out there several times to conduct enforcement. >> the superintendent posted a public letter confirming the victim was a graham middle school student. the boys family stopped by the scene late thursday. they did not want to speak on camera, but the boy was deeply loved. others describe him as a great little soul.

always polite with a smile on his face, would come to our house in a good mood. >> the superintendent said beginning friday morning and monday, grief counselors will be on campus to support students, staff, and teachers. in mountain view, amanda del castillo. >> as we move the roanoke park school district will return to the classroom. the six-day strike is over. the teachers union announced it has reached a tentative agreement. it is called a monumental shift that will prioritizeall schoolsg on a half-day schedule as planned. san francisco unified teachers packed up sleeping bags after spending the past several nights at headquarters. the union reached a deal with the district to resolve ongoing payroll issues that left some

teachers underpaid. j.r. stone has been following the story all week long and has the latest. cracks after a three and a sit in, or sleep in at the unified school district headquarters, representatives are going home. the union says the district paid a majority of educators who previously had been severely underpaid. >> it was tuesday morning that we got the commitment. >> the new puerile system and underpayments in 1003 cases. 25 have yet to be resolved. >> there is no way any of you should have come down here. i hold myself accountable. >> we spoke with a special education instructor at which time she estimated she had been shorted $2000. as of thursday night, she received money for the tutoring program she was involved in and

night on 70 6th avenue. when officers approached the car, the driver sped off and slammed into another car at the end of the block as you see on the map. two people were killed. a woman in the backseat survived. but hospitalized. a small memorial popped up at the crash site. and oakland's police chief calls the incident tragic and preventable. >> a really senseless crime that should not have happened. we apprehended the suspect. they are in custody. >> the driver will be charged for the deaths of the people he killed. >> moderna is asking the fda to authorize a fourth dose of the covid-19 vaccine for all adults. it doesn't mean all adults immediately need a booster shot. securing authorization would allow for more flexibility down the road if vaccine guidance

changes. pfizer asks for authorization for an additional booster dose. their application was only for adults 65 years of age and older. the fda planning a meeting on booster shot recommendations for different age groups. two years ago today, the bay area began its coronavirus shelter-in-place. santa clara county's public health officer is expressing optimism for the future. she's thinking the community for making it happen. the diligence of residents and officials alike saved thousands of lives. santa clara county's death rate average is two times lower than the state, and 2.5 times lower than the nation as a whole. the doctor attributes it to vaccination rates and regulations the county deployed. >> we've lost 2180 people in our community to covid to date.

>> oakland police charged three people in the murder of a retired bay area police officer. he died after being shot in oakland last november protecting a tv news crew. one of the suspects is still at large. u.s. marshals are asking for the public's help tracking down laurent gilbert, the suspected getaway driver. his alleged accomplices have been arrested. >> the family, i have spoken to his wife, we will do everything we could to identify the people responsible. it is rewarding to come before her and the family and friends and say we've identified those individuals and are being

have a new warning about overdoses. the department of public health has an alert in response to a series of overdoses among people inadvertently exposed to fentanyl while using cocaine. investigators have seen three fatal and nine nonfatal fentanyl overdoses in the last two weeks involving people who say they thought they were using cocaine only. fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be up to 50 times more potent than heroin. the multiyear drought we are in will continue and it may worsen in the coming months. that is according to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. here's what california looks like. extreme drought expanded from 12% of the state to 35% of the state. >> you look at the weather as a whole, we have some very wet weeks in december. january and february are very dry.
