if i can will die out that at least anya will be safe. that's that's pretty heavy. huh? yeah, it was really touched us and on a very very human level like deep deep inside olena had just made connections at this rally at the ukrainian cultural center in los angeles mika vogue and her husband found a family in that would take on you in we were thinking of hers as an adopted daughter and we still are thinking that way at this point that she's like an adopted daughter to us the three-day journey began in this fan the family had to use all their savings for a ride to the border with poland almost there the driver asked on you for even more money to take a different route and avoid the checkpoint lines and it's a dangerous for me as so to leave ukraine alone, it was really dangerous anya said it was chaos in poland. she couldn't find a place to sleep and she had several encounters with people. she believes are human traffickers. there are lots of volunteers

an amazing place on 3,000 acres check out the stunning views of the pacific just off highway 1 and then there's the rich history for mining visitors that a lot was happening in northern california long before the gold rush because most people don't know that there were russians in california in the 19th century the russian river. i guess they named that for a reason russian traders settled, fort ross in 1812. their influence is everywhere from the chapel architecture to the back and interactive field trips for school kids where everyone plays a part even teachers. i am the commandant of fort ross and he was in charge of, you know running this russia's remote outpost colony the russians only stayed here in the sonoma coast for about 30 years in 1841. they sold fort ross to john sutter now summit russia want to take it back this week a high-ranking member of russian parliament suggested that his country should reclaim territories like fort ross as payback for us sanctions it prompted this response from fort

the roof of the empty office building finally giving into the four alarm fire weighing it down. we've got fire in multiple floors on multiple levels throughout this building the building surrounded by other office buildings employees had been outside for hours watching the scenes step by step. the building was straight windows on fire when i got here and then just recently i saw the balconies were kind of lifting up a little bit at times the smoke became so intense it was nearly impossible to as we spoke with some of those workers watching the fire. all you could see was smoke pouring out of the second story windows. there's this is three stories and it was excuse me. we stopped our interview to get to cleaner air. i moved down here from wine country. we were living up there when during tubs fire so i'm familiar with the difference the smoke smell the employees work nearby tell me that the building has been empty for several months santa clara county fire officials confirming to us that no one. inside at the time we did a

trends in europe, which is why the white house is keeping a close eye on the uk so far hospitalizations have not increased. locally despite the a2 being 30% more transmissible than the first train of omicron. in the uk the ba2 sub-variant of omicron is growing about 80% faster than the first strain of omicron according to the uk health security agency. the us is actively monitoring those cases abroad. we're trying to still assess the ultimate impact whether people are going to be sick and large numbers there where they will increase mortality, but it's concerning we spoke to dr. tom inglesby senior adviser to the white house covid-19 response team. they're detecting. majority of ba2 cases in the northeast of the us we do predict that it will become the majority strain at some point that circulating. it has not led to an increase in the overall number of covid cases before vaccines and boosters and increase of

covid-19 cases led to an uptake in hospitalizations. we spoke to the chief of the emergency department at soccer break, san francisco general hospital about how the last two years equipped them for this new face of living with covid. we opened other floors. we had designated specific areas to manage both critically ill and non-critically ill covid patients that needed to be admitted and we now have a template for that we learned what worked what didn't work and we were able to really refine a lot of those processes to be better prepared. so we have those now ready to go in the bay area many of the ba2 cases are being detected in the south bay. despite santa clara being the most highly vaccinated large county in the entire country. in the northern parts of our county the wastewater that we follow most of the omicron is this b2 sub lineage interestingly, and this gives me hope it is not driving up the levels overall, so i don't know why but it isn't doing a press

today. it's a case police initially remember said was a hoax matthew mueller was sentenced after pleading no contest to breaking into the home of denise huskins and aaron quinn drugging them then kidnapping and raping huskans mueller is already serving. 40 year sentence on federal kidnapping charges hoskins and quinn sued vallejo police for calling the case a hoax. they received a 2.5 million dollars settlement. in the east bay teachers pick at it outside northgate high school in walnut creek today demanding better pay from mount diablo unified school district. they're calling it the getting ready to strike awareness campaign teachers say they have not received a raise in years. they're demanding a 12 and a half percent raise over six years. the district says meeting salary demands could lead to more budget cuts teachers plan to strike on march 28th, if agreement is not reached. right. we want to know the timeline on that rain. yeah much needed rain sandy. great to see it coming.

reporting about san francisco unified school districts declining enrollment, but now the district is reporting that more families applied for remote or enrollment this year compared to last year. it's only up a little bit but as abc 7 news senior education reporter liam melendez explains. there's reason for optimism. san

14,127 applications compared to 13,917 the year before for starters more four year olds were eligible for transitional kindergarten under california's new universal tk program now a child turning four between september and february can attend. we opened nine new transitional kindergarten classrooms across the city to accommodate all of those families and the demand for tk. outreach also played a role in getting more families to sign up including helping them fill out the applications on time. it's pretty good process there. nice people in there. they making sure i get through everything correctly still it's not where the district would like to be during the pandemic public schools in san francisco saw about 3500 students leave the district. that's a loss of six percent. this means the district will get less in state funding per student the district hopes the will come back to pre-pandemic levels as more families learn

from richmond. it happened just before midnight on interstate 5 south of kettleman city in kings county. chp officers. say 29 year old unheld michelle was driving a honda civic that drifted off the road hit the shoulder and overturned. he suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital his two-year-old passenger sadly died. doctors say the man who was shot while driving on 580 in livermore last month is lucky to be alive. he was in his truck with his wife and two grandchildren abc 7 news. anchor dionne lim spoke to him about the terrifying experience. it's a story you'll see only on seven. i got a second chance. that's what i'm calling. it is a second chance, so i'm gonna just try to try to take advantage of it. i'm ver i am just i'm very lucky. i had some angels on my shoulder that day for sure and share the dramatic event. s that happen to him while driving along 580 and livermore january 27th is nothing short of a miracle. this is driving.

focusing on climate and the environment as part of our efforts to help build a better bay area the newly passed federal budget is bringing welcome news for bay area environmental advocates. they're hoping the money will help. jumpstart major climate change projects when it comes to spending for the environment san francisco bay's ship may finally be coming in congresswoman. jackie speier just pushed through 24 million dollars in funding for the epa's bay restoration projects. that's roughly triple the normal amount and long overdue according to david lewis of the nonprofit saved the bay. yeah federal funding for san francisco bay has been a fraction of what chesapeake and puget sound and other bays receive. this is a huge boost for accelerating wetland restoration and cleaning up water quality in the bay. while the epa funding will be a welcome boost for shoreline restoration other advocates say a historic surgeon spending for bay area environmental projects could be just around the corner
