be wondering if the surge in other parts of the world means it is inevitable we will see a surge here. doctors we spoke to say that while we could see a spike, it is not something us in the bay area need to be too concerned about, at least not yet. in parts of asia and europe, covid is once again surging and for californians excited to finally remove their masks, hearing about the situation may elicit a renewed sense of dread should >> we seem to be always two or four weeks after the u.k. it is like the u.k. is a harold for us. >> is what is happening over seas bound to happen here? after two years of expecting to hear doom and gloom, their answers were surprisingly optimistic. as it inevitable the bay area sees another surge in the next month or two months? >> it is not inevitable in that timeframe. >> should people be concerned?

>> not given our high immunity. i think that is really important to stress. >> she does believe it is likely the bay area will see some spike but it will likely be similar to the u.k. and denmark where cases have gone up but hospitalizations stayed flat. >> the bay area is highly vaccinated. we are 87% vaccinated over the age of five. because of that, i'm hoping we are going to follow the same pattern and are hospitalizations are going to be ok. >> dr. rutherford says the bay area has so much unity he believes there may not even be a surge. he says it may not happen again until winter. >> it depends on what happens with ukraine, what happens in western europe. i don't think so. i think we are probably reasonably protected now with the next few months.

the bay area has gone to the point where it is hard to live. workers have to live 45 minutes to an hour out asking for relief for company who just reported the most earnings they have had since 2014. >> united steelworkers represents one third of the workers at the refinery. chevron issued a statement saying we believe our contract offer is fair, competitive and responsive to usw concerns. the union demands exceeded what the company believes to be reasonable. six dollar gas is quickly becoming the norm at stations across california. the latest numbers from aaa show gas prices have climbed to an average of 5.85 a gallon. in the bay area prices are holding steady. drivers are paying 5.84 a gallon to the average price in samo does go is five point 82 a gallon. >>

>> google is facing a lawsuit from former minority employees who say they faced discrimination will working at the company. some of those employees share their stories today and zach fuentes has more on what they had to say. at google for six years. she left her home in baltimore to become a diversity recruiter. she was able to recruit more than 500 black students to work for the company. she says she was wrongfully terminated in september of 2020. >> it was one of the most pain i have had in my life she says despite two degrees and years of experience, she was never given a promotion and was underpaid. she says other black employees work sprinting the same thing. >> i began to question the whit dominant policies in practice within google.

policies that have ultimately led to the under leveling and underpaying of black talent at google. policies that have led to black believing google at higher rates than any other group in the country. >> she said her plans to address the discrimination led to her firing should now she is being represented by a team of attorneys. >> don't condemn her. support her. let's try to disrupt discrimination. friday and since then, they have heard from others who say they were discriminated against like chloe who worked at google from 2012 to 2016. she said she faced sexual harassment and tried to speak out about race issues but was bullied into resigning without severance or any support. >> it was clear to me they wanted me out but i did not realize what my rights were and they took advantage of that. >> crump is working to make it a class action suit.

>> will, we encourage you to do the right thing. >> we have reached out google for a response to the lawsuit. so far, we have not heard back. >> in the east bay, a fire destroyed three tiny homes at a community designed to provide transitional housing for the homeless. the fire started at 10:00 a.m. near lake merritt. it took crews 25 minutes to get the fire out. no one was hurt by five people were displaced. the cause is under investigation. >> a man who was somehow trapped in an underground pipe in antioch is safe this evening things to contra costa he does contra costa fire crews. he spent two days stuck in a narrow storm drain should a bystander was the first to hear his cries for help. >> i heard him screaming for help.

he asked me to help him. hours. the team had to dig near the area before going down the drain to pull the men out here officials say he was responsive and taken to a local hospital. in the south bay, a sunnyvale man is getting ready to leave the hospital four months after he wrist his life to put out a fire near a school. he suffered severe burns and dr. say he had little chance to live. only on abc7news, dustin dorsey talked to the man as he prepared to go home. >> at santa clara valley medical center, 53-year-old is taking his road to recovery one step at a time. we have translated his interview with us. >> very thankful for all the hospital has done. >> garcia was rescued by firefighters while trying to put out a fire himself burning near a school i began

my boots and i had my bad and i tried to put out the fire with my jacket but i could not. i heard a voice saying he is burning. after that i don't remember anything until i got to the hospital. >> garcia suffered severe burns to more than 60% of his body. >>'s legs in particular. fourth to fifth degree he was burned down to his bone. his chance of surviving was 20%. not only has he survived but he is able to walk with assistance. >> it took four months and nine surgeries including one where innovative procedure. doctors used a treatment to grow more than 5000 square centimeters of new skin from his remaining unburned skin. >> sending a small biopsy of his skin to a laboratory that is able to grow massive sheets of that which is able to facilitate healing the majority of his burns. >> garcia is now enjoyinarcia is little things in life including a real meal after weeks on a liquid diet. >> a lenguaenguaenguaenguaenguaa
