years old falling out of the sky. no evidence of survivors. what experts are saying as the investigation gets under way. plus, the questions expected today as supreme court nominee ketanji brown jackson faces senators on capitol hill, critical of her views on sex offenders. what we're learning about her decisions. new fallout for golfer phil mickelson after his controversial comments. and forget smartphones. our so-called dumb phones the new thing? >> announcer: from abc news in new york, this is "america this morning." good tuesday morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news. a night of terrifying weather. >> the destruction in parts of texas is being called tremendous. this video shows a twister tearing across a highway. look at that red truck in the middle of your screen there, flipped over like a toy. >> just unbelievable. authorities overnight said there were no confirmed reports of any fatalities but the damage is extensive. here's abc's derricke dennis.

>> reporter: overnight, a weather emergency for millions of people. a wave of storms triggering multiple tornadoes. >> oh, my gosh, it's right here! >> reporter: at least ten tornadoes slamming texas. several homes and businesses are damaged in round rock outside austin. >> get inside! get inside! run! >> reporter: customers at this walmart running for cover, ducking inside the store when the tornado hit. video from inside the headquarters of computer maker dell shows the twister moving across the parking lot, then barreling toward a traffic camera before taking the camera out. this shopping center also taking a direct hit, leveling a bank of america and heavily damaging this chili's restaurant. >> we actually talked to one guy who was inside the restaurant. he said he was in the bathroom when it hit and the only reason he knew a tornado was coming because everyone else was just rushing in with him to kind of gather for safety. >> reporter: farther north, the damage from a tornado is being

described as a two-mile-wide dr debris field in the city of jacks borough north west of fort worth. this elementary school is missing part of its roof. just down the street, this is what's left of the gym at the high school, now torn apart. >> oh, my two pictures survived on my wall. >> reporter: this couple survived after powerful winds tore apart their home. they took cover in a bathtub. >> we were back here. there's a blanket i had. >> so this is the bathroom that saved you? >> that's the bathroom that saved us. look, we can see the come thing coming up. when we stood up, water was hitting us in the face. >> reporter: in oklahoma, a tornado touched down in kingston, causing widespread damage to several homes. about you this morning, a powerful sign of hope. this image of a rainbow shooting up from the piles of debris as the cleanup effort gets under way. derricke dennis, abc news. with those storms on the

move, we'll check today's forecast in just a few moments. now to ukraine where president zelenskyy says the port city of mariupol where hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped is being reduced to ashes. and president biden warns things could soon take a turn for the worse. a new warning from the white house reveals russia is resorting to more extreme tactics in ukraine, including the use of hypersonic missiles, which can hit a target more than 1,000 miles away and reach speeds ten times the speed of sound. and unlike other missiles, they can change course mid flight, making them harder to intercept. president biden signaling it's a sign that vladimir putin is getting more desperate. >> the more his back is against the wall, the greater the severity of the tactics he may employ. >> reporter: the pentagon says russian forces are not making any progress on the ground. >> i think what we're seeing is the russians have been flummoxed. they've been frustrated. they have failed to achieve a lot of their objectives on the

ground. >> reporter: now the biden administration is reportedly sending soviet-made air defense equipment to ukraine. according to "the wall street journal," the air defense equipment, known as the sa-8, are decades old and were obtained by the u.s. so it could examine the technology used by the russian military. in the meantime, video verified by abc news shows the moment a missile hit a shopping mall in kyiv, killing at least eight people. russia says the ukrainians were using the abandoned mall to store weapons and ammunition. here's a look at the vast facility before the strike and after. much of it reduced to rubble. in kherson, a show of defiance as civilians protest the russian occupiers. verified video shows russian forces firing stun grenades on the protesters. it comes as new estimates show more than 1.5 million children have now fled ukraine. that's 1 in 5 kids in the country. and an estimated 6 million children are still trapped inside ukraine. back in russia, moscow has now

outlawed facebook and instagram. the state department responded saying the assault on access to information must stop. president biden is warning about possible cyberattacks from russia. he says intelligence indicates vladimir putin's government is exploring options for a potential strike. homeland security urges american businesses to enhance their cyber defenses. urgent questions are being asked this morning after the deadly air disaster involving a boeing 737. the passenger jet suddenly fell out of the sky over china. the plane is one of the most popular in the world and here in the u.s. and now american investigators are joining the case. abc's brit clenity has the latest from hong kong. >> reporter: mona, the search for answers continues into what went wrong on monday when a chinese passenger plane carrying 132 people took a nosedive into a mountainous area in southern china, sparking a fire. the china eastern airlines boeing 737-800 was flying from kunming to guangzhou nearly 100

miles from here in hong kong. about three-quarters of the way through, it suddenly loses altitude. abc news aviation analyst john nance says he's baffled by the way in which this aircraft, which was just six years old, seemed to kind of fall out of the sky. >> even though this is a young airplane, you've still got human beings at the controls and we've got to find out exactly what happened here. >> reporter: while so much attention has been on the newer 737 max model after those two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019, this crash involved a regular 737, the most popular commercial plane in the world. now, this is china's worst aviation disaster for many years, and it's very much rattling chinese citizens, who have come to depend on the state-owned carriers for their decent safety records. now, that's partly why there's so much urgency to find these black boxes, to find clues into how this plane went down. andrew. >> britt, thank you. now to the historic hearing in washington today. senators will begin questioning

supreme court nominee ketanji brown jackson, and things could get heated as some republicans criticize her record. abc's alex presha is on capitol hill. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. get this. today begins what's estimated to be about 19 hours' worth of questioning in these confirmation hearings. and, look, if yesterday was any indication, it could get tense. this morning, day two of the historic confirmation hearings for supreme court nominee judge ketanji brown jackson. >> i do. >> reporter: following up on monday's roughly 4 1/2-hour-long session. much indhe>> i hope that will sh us ee harvardgruate's fourth a before the committee, and she's received bipartisan support in the past. but this time is different. >> we're going to look at her

past decisions and her statements. >> reporter: republicans remain noncommittal. senator lindsey graham, in anticipation of criticism that he expects gop senators to receive, saying this. >> we're all racist if we ask hard questions. it's not going to fly with us. >> reporter: but possibly the most severe challenge to judge jackson's confirmation, misleading allegations by republican senator josh hawley, claiming that jackson has a long record of letting child porn offenders off the hook. >> judge jackson handed down a lenient sentence this was below what the federal guidelines recommended. >> reporter: according to the u.s. sentencing commission, roughly 60% of sentences in such cases are lower than what the guidelines call for. and in most of the cases hawley cited, federal prosecutors requested sentences shorter than what the guidelines suggest. abc pressing hawley on his own votes to confirm judge who's have similar records. >> you voted to confirm two federal judges that have imposed lighter sentences. >> not for this job, i sure haven't.

missouri governor eric greitens is accusing him of physically abusing her and their children. greitens a republican is running for senate. his ex-wife claims he knocked her down and took her phone so she couldn't call for help. at least two republicanns.- senators are calling on him to drop out of the race. we're learning more about a dangerous stunt on a los angeles street involving a tesla and a driver who fled the scene. this morning, police searching for the driver seen here jumping a los angeles intersection in a tesla. videos of the stunt shows the vehicle speeding up the hill before launching into the air nose-diving on the other side of the street before slamming into trash cans and vehicles. the driver and witnesses then fleeing in a different tesla. >> what's up, everybody? dominykas here. >> reporter: police identified social media personality dominykas as a person of interest showing a video in which he appeared to claim

responsibility saying, quote, lapd didn't like my stunt and laughing and for those living on that street it's no laughing matter. >> just super dangerous and for them and for us. we live right here, so the car easily could have slid into our property. >> reporter: jordan hooks says his car was left undrivable. >> my steering column is all messed up. my suspension is blown, so the car is done. >> reporter: an online fund-raiser to buy hook a new car has raised more than $11,000. despite the damage and the danger, police say they're treating the incident as a misdemeanor hit and run with a potential penalty so low neighbors fear it will happen again. >> everybody moved their cars last night worrying about is this going to happen again. people look at it and be like let's do it. >> the social media personality claims he took marijuana edibles before the stunt. police say they have reached out to him. >> at least no one was hurt. all right, coming up, new fallout for a superstar athlete after his controversial comments. also ahead, why one of the most popular food delivery services is accused of deceiving customers.

triple-double of his career last night in cleveland, his former team. it included a monster dunk on his former teammate kevin love. the lakers won 131-120. >> he showed no love right there. we turn now to a popular food service that exploded in popularity during the pandemic. it is now being accused of deceptive practices. abc's rhiannon ally explains. >> reporter: this morning, food delivery service grubhub is the one getting served. a lawsuit accusing the company of lying to its customers. >> people are trying to survive out here. >> reporter: while slapping restaurants with fees. >> and companies that do business in the district are required to give consumers truthful information. >> reporter: carl racine filing the lawsuit claiming grubhub charges hidden fees and uses bait and switch tactics all while pretending to help local business during the pandemic. this needs to stop. the lawsuit accuses of grubhub

of deploying illegal tactics, such as failing to disclose when it charges higher prices than restaurants, impersonating restaurants to get more business for grubhub, and advertising free services that aren't free. >> grubhub also advertised free delivery when that actually was not the case. >> reporter: the lawsuit alleges at the beginning of the pandemic, grubhub falsely used a promotion called "supper for support" in which people thought they were helping to support struggling restaurants. >> in fact, it was just increasing its own sales to district consumers and requiring the struggling restaurants at that time to actually cover the discount costs. >> reporter: grubhub is firing back, saying it tried to work with the attorney general's office in the last year, adding, many of the practices at issue have been discontinued. we will aggressively defend our business in court. grubhub told the website tech crunch that it will make changes to some of the messaging on its app. it will add a disclosure stating that prices in the restaurant may be lower than on the app.
