moving forward finding solutions this is abc 7 news? i am here standing on the shoulders of generations. of americans who never had anything close to this kind of opportunity. supreme court nominee catanji brown jackson was back to face senate judiciary committee members today for historic confirmation hearings. good evening. i'm amidates and i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us. you're watching abc 7 news at five it is day two of four of those confirmation hearings and members of the senate judiciary committee wasted no time jumping into the tough questions. does roe v wade have the status of being a case? that is a super precedent? well, senator all supreme court cases are precedential.

it. a hundred and eight of the 115 supreme court justices we've had to represent our country have been white men this 10th grade world history class focused on the confirmation hearing of catanji brown jackson realizing that who serves on the supreme court can make a difference in their lives. i think it's really important for teachers and for schools to let students know that hey this implicates you i am committed to serving as an even-handed. supreme court justice if i'm confirmed by this body a point of discussion was can a judge really be impartial. connect especially an adult be like a hundred percent unbiased. no, it's impossible. i don't think you can be in partial 100% because we're humans. we're not robots. so it we're all we're always gonna have an incline to something that's favorite. jackson was asked about her views on abortion race and even religion. do you attend church regularly?

your roku apple tv fire tv and android tv devices history was made in california today as a commission confirmed justice patricia guerrero as the first latina member of the california supreme court governor newsom nominated justice guerrero last month. the 50 year old is the daughter of mexican immigrants and an imperial valley native. she is a federal prosecutor superior court judge and most recently sat on the fourth district court of appeals. she graduated from uc berkeley and stanford law school. a hayward mother and her boyfriend have been formally charged with the murder of the woman to eight-year-old daughter samantha johnson and dante jackson were charged in merced county with abusing and murdering sofia mason whose body was found in jackson's merced home. this month johnson has been arrested but police are still searching for jackson according to court documents jackson kept sophia in a shed outside the house and she was subjected to physical and sexual abuse. oakland city leaders say tonight that they are fully committed to

bringing back an anti-crime program that has been credited with cutting violent crime once before mayor libby shaft joined her police chief and clergy to announce the city's ceasefire unit. it will be fully staffed and sent back out onto the streets. this program takes aim at group and gang violent crime. officials say the ceasefire unit cut crime in oakland a decade ago and mayor schaffolds announced today. she will support a call to drop no bail court policies. we are now joining with da o'malley to ask the courts to return most of those bailed policies back to pre-covid policies. we believe that also will have a profound effect on repeat offense on recidivism and also on the cycles of ret. nation that ceasefire was designed to interrupt. the ceasefire program not only includes or involves police, but community groups and clergy 26 officers are being assigned to

the ceasefire program with that number going up as police cadets graduate the academy. in the south bay the trial of former theranos president sunnybalwani got underway with opening statements and the first witness testimony today abc 7 news reporter. zach fuentes was there and has the details. it was a return to this san jose federal courthouse for sonny bonwani after last week's delay cameras, and audio are not allowed inside bhawani spacing the same charges as homes. they're being tried separately because homes plan to testify that bawani subjected her to mental and physical abuse today bhawani's attorneys worked hard to distance him from homes saying that he did not control the company or mr. bellwani what you saw was him saying, there are no existed before i ever got there and those relationship. so were formed before i became part of this and it continued mm we.i left he faces couirsyo otuiecutor rer lch s o that thirabo

patients with technology. she felt wasn't reliable. she was questioned that link about what the theranos technology was able to do court ended today in the middle of her testimony, which is set to start back up tomorrow morning at 9:00. san jose zach fuentes abc 7 news someone has been taken into custody in connection with two fires that broke out along highway 4 near willow pass road in bay point. they burned three and a half acres this afternoon contra costa county fire officials say these were the first significant fires of the season and an indicator of dangerous conditions. this comes as we are seeing unseasonably warm temperatures across the bay area. this is a live look from our camera in the east bay hills. looking towards san pablo reservoir, and it's been beautiful like this all across the region today boy, it sure has that we want to give you the latest on church and whether we i'm a broken record, yeah, so let's get right to abc 7 news meteorologist sandy patel sandia. yeah, dan anama felt like summer out here and definitely some records here are the preliminary numbers so you can see the sun is shining as we look towards

ukraine where there are signs that ukrainian troops are gaining ground as they go on the offensive ukrainian government says it has retaken a strategically important town outside the capital of keeve. this comes as the pentagon claims that the russian military has lost more than 10 percent of its combat forces russian forces continue their assault on civilian targets a missile strike on a mall and kiev killed eight people the deadliest attack in the capital since the war began the now reports more than 10 million have been forced from their homes a quarter of the ukrainian population. tonight the contra costa republican party is raising money to buy body armor for ukrainians at a fundraiser.

was a gorgeous day across the bay area today with warm weather even a few records broken, but we also know it comes at a price abc 7 news report reporter dustin dorsey has more on what this could mean for increased fire danger and overall drought conditions. march in the bay area feels more like a taste of summer with es i the 70s and 80s and record highs falling across the region it made for a perfect day to go. enjoy the sunshine the human body likes likes warm sunny skies, and this is one of the days we've had you know this week. it's been nice. so, it's great. i mean the rain is not as desirable as the sunshine. that's for sure. well don't tell that to anyone following the drought and climate closely while it's true. it feels good to soak in some vitamin. sjsu professor craig clement says these record temperatures are actually not good for our environment any of these heat waves that we have so early in

spring helps dry out the fuel so it can actually cause our fire danger to increase earlier than we typically would see in the late spring early summer. we have been enjoying these beautiful green hill sides in the area, but more days like today could turn that green to brown. in fact clement says plants are drying. out or curing about a month sooner than they did last year grass fires normally start in june, but he says this fuel may be ready to catch fire as early as may most of the big fires actually do start in graph grassfields burn very hot very easily and then they can carry up intohehr into the forest so we could actually potentially see more fires because of our early curing of the grasses. so what's the magic cure to this curing well reign, of course, it has been a historically winner the clement said some late spring rain would go a long way because if not, the outlook is looking pretty grim in terms of what we should expect for next

that is a good tip. well, finally tonight some much-needed federal funding is heading to the bay area to support the health of our oceans today north may congressman jared huffman announced $500,000 in funding to help further the work done at the marine mammal center. the world's largest marine hospital the money will help provide medical and rehabilitative care as well as protect and promote marine biodiversity and marine animal we desperately need to continue. into broaden this important work because our marine mammals are critical indicator species for for the health of our oceans. now another two million dollars will help restore the kelp forests disappearing off the farallon islands and the north coast since 2014 90% of kelp forests to northern california have disappeared 90% all right that is going to do it for us for now. thank you so much for joining us world news tonight with david muir is next. i'm on a date and i'm dan ashley for cindya patel all of us here. we appreciate your time go see
