"world news tonight" anchor david muir is in warsaw where he met ukrainian refugees. including a boy who fled all alone from the war zone.

david, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. heartbreaking stories here. president biden arriving in poland today. he's here to meet with u.s. forces, members of the 82nd airborne division but most importantly here to witness this worsening humanitarian crisis unfolding. really a catastrophe what we've witnessed here. we've made two reporting trips now to the region to report on the humanitarian crisis. this number alone, here in poland they've now received more than 2 million ukrainian refugees fleeing war. the numbers overnight from unicef now 4.3 million ukrainian children displaced from their homes because of war. and when you think about that, that's more than half of all the children inside ukraine. the total number now, 10 million ukrainians or more now displaced by putin's war on ukraine. as whit mentioned, we've been traveling throughout the region. and overnight we learned of a theater that had been built by the ukrainians. we went to visit it here in poland across from the ukraine border.

and inside we found so many mothers and their young children fleeing war, leaving behind husbands, brothers who are now fighting against the russians. a couple of the stories forgott. oksana and her baby alexander. she said the journey was so difficult with that baby in hand and carrying him on those trains, hours and hours on the trains. grateful for the help along the way. traveling all the way from kyiv to lviv and across the border in poland. she doesn't know how long she'll be in that theater. we met with a boy. he's left school. he's traveling alone. his parents wanted him to flee for his own safety. he said he can't wait to play basketball again. he was proud of his jersey. he pulled it out and showed me. he's number 11 on his team. he hopes to go home soon. and, of course, there was the 16-year-old girl elmira who told me she remembers the last day of school. it was one month ago when her life changed, her life as she knew it.

we're now a month and a day into this war here in ukraine, and there's no sign that the humanitarian crisis is going to let up any time soon across the region. whit. >> those numbers are staggering and those personal stories really emphasizing the human toll. david, the president announcing new aid for ukraine. >> reporter: he did announce new humanitarian aid, $1 billion. and that money will be earmarked for food, medicine, water, not only here in poland but throughout the region as the crisis worsens. he made that point of saying 100,000 ukrainian refugees will be welcomed into the united states. though we all know that will take some time to actually play out, but he did say that ukrainian refugees will be welcome in america. whit? >> david muir reporting for us from warsaw, poland. thanks so much. linsey? >> whit, thank you. president biden on his way to poland after a high-stakes day of summits with american allies, reaffirming nato's solidarity and delivering that warning to vladimir putin on chemical weapons.

our chief white house correspondent cecilia vega is in warsaw with the latest. good morning, cecelia. >> reporter: hi, linsey. good morning to you. allies in a united show of force against vladimir putin. president biden on his way here to poland right now, and he is pushing european leaders to isolate putin even more by cutting off their dependency to russian oil. this morning, president biden with european allies making a big promise that could help them and hurt moscow saying the u.s. will ramp up shipments of gas to europe so countries are less dependent on russian oil. >> putin's energy resources are to coerce and manipulate his neighbors. that's how he's used it. he's used the profits to drive his war machine. >> reporter: allies gathered at nato headquarters for that emergency meeting where president biden stood firm in his decision to not send american troops to ukraine. >> you have made it very clear in this conflict you do not want to see world war iii, but is it possible that in expressing that so early that you were too quick to rule out direct military

intervention in this war? could putin have been emboldened knowing that you are not going to get involved directly in this conflict? >> no and no. >> reporter: he warned the u.s. and nato would respond if putin used chemical weapons. >> we would respond if he uses it. the nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use. >> reporter: we asked exactly what that would mean. if chemical weapons were used in ukraine, would that trigger a military response from nato? >> it would trigger a response in kind. whether or not -- you're asking whether nato would cross -- we'd make that decision at the time. >> reporter: ukraine's president zelenskyy joining the summit virtually pleading for help, saying nato has yet to show what the alliance can do to save people. president biden announcing new sanctions on more tan 400 russian lawmakers, state owned defense companies and dozens more russian elites. the president insisting nato's unity will ultimately defeat putin. >> putin was banking on nato being split. nato has never, never been more

united than it is today. >> reporter: we also heard president biden make an unprecedented suggestion. he wants to see russia kicked out of the g20, that group of the world's largest economies. russia was booted from the smaller group, the g8, in 2014 after it invaded crimea. this kickout has never been done before. if member countries don't agree, biden says he wants to see ukraine have a seat at the table at those meetings right there with russia. >> cecilia vega in warsaw, thanks so much. nato is reinforcing its eastern flank with more troops in response to the russian invasion and our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz was granted exclusive access to a nato military exercise near the polish border with american troops participating. martha is now in warsaw with more. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning to you, will. these were exercises like nothing i've seen, war games like nothing i've seen because the threat is so real. this was a show of force. we were about ten miles from the

border with belarus, belarus, russia's staunchest ally. that's where many russian forces were amassed before the invasion into ukraine. there were about 2,000 nato troops taking part in this exercise, troops from poland, romania, uk and america, and they did an air, land and water assault trying to repel this imaginary enemy that they think could be very real. i talked to one polish commander on the ground. i asked him how likely he thought it was that russia would cross the border, attack targets in poland. he said, never thought in the 21st century they would attack ukraine. now they're destroying it. this is crazy. also talked to many american troops. they're there. california national guard, oregon national guard, washington state national guard, asked major trevor phillips from california what he was thinking about in

regard to ukraine, he said, it's difficult to watch and not be able to do anything. we are direct action type people. the mission of nato is to deter and defend. they say they will be ready for anything. will? >> martha, thank you. whit? now to the latest from the war zone. the city of mariupol under siege with the battle raging in the streets now, and ukrainian forces fighting back. our foreign correspondent james longman is in lviv with the very latest on the ground there. james, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. russia is tightening its grip on mariupol now giving out humanitarian aid to the very people they have made homeless. part of the clear aim to permanently occupy the city. this as we're now seeing for the first time the aftermath of that attack on mariupol's theater where hundreds were thought buried under the rubble. it was the attack that shocked the world, and new images circulating online this morning now show the immediate aftermath of the bombardment on mariupol's theater. this is what it had looked like reduced to this. covered in debris. people unsure where to turn for safety. now russia's dark ambition for

the city clear, permanent occupation, but ukrainian fighters aren't giving up. russian state television showing these images of russian troops fighting in the streets. this video circulating on social media, a driver weaving through a residential street. blown up cars littering the neighborhood. russia gives out aid to the very people it's made homeless. a top russian official has said they're here to stay. civilians across the country targeted. this video shows units from chernihiv removing objects from people's homes. the ukrainians saying they destroyed this russian warship. it was miles west of mariupol. a month of fighting and fierce ukrainian resistance battles on pushing russian forces back 40 miles away from kyiv. to the east, russian forces have been unable to use ground forces to take kharkiv. ukraine's second largest city. they resorted to aerial bombardments with no signs of letting up. homes seen here leveled. their residents trying to extinguish the flames with bucks of water. 76-year-old victor

describing the moment of the strike saying, and then all of a sudden the ceiling started to fall on me. this video shows the aftermath of a russian strike outside of a shopping center where humanitarian aid and food was being distributed. you can see a missile still lodged in the ground after an attack. the city's major saying it killed 16 people and 17 injured. with fears bombs could fall at any time, many of the city's residents have been forced under ground to the metro system. some there for nearly a month. ukraine is pushing back on the ground, but they cannot defend from russian aerial bombardment. so while the invasion may have stalled, russia has not stopped raining down bombs on civilians across this country, whit. >> we see the devastation in those images. james, thank you. linsey? now to judge ketanji brown jackson's nomination to the supreme court. her hearings have come to an end, and now we wait for the voting to see if she gets any bipartisan support. congressional correspondent rachel scott is live on capitol hill this morning. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: linsey, good morning. it was a marathon of a week on capitol hill.

four days of confirmation hearings, 30 hours. judge jackson has a clear path to being confirmed to the u.s. supreme court. the question is how close will this vote be? right after the confirmation hearings wrapped up, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell said he cannot and will not support judge jackson's confirmation, accusing her of being soft on crime. republican opposition is not enough to stop judge jackson's confirmation. as long as democrats stay united they have the votes to push it through. so the senate judiciary committee will be meeting on monday hoping to vote her nomination out of the committee by april 4th sending it over to the full senate for a vote by easter. in about two weeks judge jackson is on track to make history as the first black woman confirmed to the supreme court. linsey. >> quite a milestone. rachel scott, thanks. we'll turn to march madness. this is my bracket and probably

picture, and she started crying. at that point i realized i need to fix this. >> how difficult was it to get to the point to be able to say, i'm an alcoholic? >> that was hard. that was something that i thought other people were. for me, i was a functioning alcoholic. >> you weren't looking at your drinking habits as those of an addict? >> no, i was not. and that was part of the problem was it was just, hey, let's have fun. and it was very thinly disguised as let's have a great time. but i didn't realize the physical and psychological effects it was having on me. >> our biology tricks us to crave more. and it's not necessarily you go from zero to rock bottom. there's a long time in between that maybe people don't notice as much. >> reporter: his "full house" co-as far as, john stamos and jodie sweetin have been candid about their struggles with alcohol and drugs and are part of dave's support system. >> jess, i remember all the
