by the deadline on monday assembly member timothy grayson is introducing a b-2179 a bill that could extend tenant eviction protections until june and help landlords as well. as long as we can get the completed application in by march 31st. this helps the renter stay in the housing as to nora. she's paying her pg&e bill with your donations and getting wi-fi back again, as well as something she's been promising her kids for almost a year. i'm gonna go and i'm gonna take them for an ice cream and i'm gonna finally take them to chuck e cheese. just wait for them just it's just for my kids to get home and of them, especially johnny let him know what you know, it's gonna be so happy. assembly member grace and is hoping to get this bill passed before the march 31st that line if approved this bill will void any city or county eviction moratoriums approved over the past few months.

5:06 pm
we have a variety of speakers who are within both healthcare technology biosciences the diverse panels who spoke to the students started out much like them this full circle for me being raised, you know within a quarter mile of regional medical center and being a high school volunteer here many many years ago regional medical center of san jose. ceo. ken west said, he jumped at the chance to have the hospital. see event their first in-person since the start of the pandemic the hope is that the diversity on each panel sends an important message to the students. it's hard to be what you can't see and having individuals who look like them. i think that representation matters. it's important to show them kenneth williams and the other students soaked up every moment. they had with the panels of experts and hope to have more chances like it. well emotionally, i think it's mainly the connection with the people here and the possibility of an opportunity to contact the more but it's the experts who gave their time to these

students who say they're the real winners. i got way more out of today than i i gave these young people if this is part of our future it's in good hands and san jose zach fuentes, abc7 news. today in the bay area and all across the world protests were held to demand action against climate change. this is video from one of those events in front of palo alto city hall this afternoon students in at least 500 cities took part in the global day of action abc 7 news reporter. ryan curry has the details. some sydney brussels and it's my home san francisco dozens and maybe more in the bay area joined the global movement friday. starting near the the people marched in the streets in downtown demanding a future with less pollution. we are marching for climate justice and we're standing out the message that climate justice and injustice are connected all

the issues that we have as low income people of color as marginalized people are rooted in the same system up and down the streets of san francisco. it's a various locations. the focus is on youth and what their future on this planet looks like other generations that's coming up because we don't want our planet to die symbolism running deep signs held high in the air while also leaving their mark on the ground. we're at the black building. they have blood on their hands. so we have blood and bloody hands too. they are investing in global warming and at the immigration building. all of our different struggles together and no longer separately the youth have real concern about the future of not just the bay area, but for the whole world organizers say if lawmakers don't make changes to support the climate the youth from today's protests say they will do it. elves when they get older ten

near as one of san francisco's most iconic and beloved businesses gets ready to close at the end of the month. yeah. it's a shame bank yodo mochi shop called japantown. it's home for 115 years today abc 7 news reporter lee and melendez talked with customers who say losing a member of the
5:12 pm
family. knowing the end is near people many of them young adults waited in line for hours this cold foggy morning to get a taste of benkyoto's famous japanese mochi. these are the keepers of that tradition, bobby and ricky okamura, just all handmade so we can't rush it. he's had to do it, you know at our pace the brothers know that what they make today will not satisfy the masses. well, the 13 1400. yeah. it's a stone enough. mochi is glutinous rice that's mixed and pounded into a paste when you add any type of filling. it's called manju they will officially close on march 31st, since that announcement. people have made the journey here. we just flew in from boston yesterday. so and this is like a special trip just to come. to this place. it's no secret. most people post their manju on social media as to say i came i

tasted. the hip being kyoto has been around since 1906. it survived the great depression several recessions. even the japanese and most recently covid. but it's forced to close for the simple reason that none of the children or family members are willing to take over the business kids don't want to do this. just kind of work to old school kind of laborers intensive work many worry about the impact to the closure will have on japan town it definitely will there's a lot of old time timers that come to japan town and thank you doll. hopefully that we'll be able to find somebody to replace it. but there's no replacing banky yodo. that's why aaron kimura is making a documentary on this iconic business making sure we preserve this story this food way this history this culture specifically for the generations to come the community is planning to celebrate the family's contribution.
5:14 pm
we're asking people to come out bring signs of appreciation and just to show them how much we care and how much we wish them a happy retirement for the okamura brothers. news. coming up excitement is building ahead of this sunday's oscars and a film from emeryville-based pixar is in the running for a top honor. we'll hear from the creators of the film luca and have a live report from

to be a thriver with metastatic breast cancer means asking for what we want. and need. and we need more time. so, we want kisqali. women are living longer than ever before with kisqali when taken with an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant in postmenopausal women with hr+, her2- metastatic breast cancer. kisqali is a pill that's significantly more effective at delaying disease progression versus an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant alone. kisqali can cause lung problems, or an abnormal heartbeat, which can lead to death. it can cause serious skin reactions, liver problems, and low white blood cell counts that may result in severe infections. tell your doctor right away if you have new or worsening symptoms, including breathing problems, cough, chest pain, a change in your heartbeat, dizziness,

yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, tiredness, loss of appetite, abdomen pain, bleeding, bruising, fever, chills or other symptoms of an infection, a severe or worsening rash, are or plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. avoid grapefruit during treatment. ask your doctor about living longer with kisqali. oscar sunday is underway abc 7 is your destination for all the action the big show starts at 5pm on sunday, but you're going to want to tune in early when our our coverage begins at 10 am. but you don't have to wait until sunday because the red carpet is already been rolled out. that's right at abc 7 news. anchor kumasi. aaron is there and joins us live from the dolby theater? komasi you had a chance to speak with the director and producer of one of the movies nominated
5:17 pm
for best animated feature film pretty cool. is so cool the film's amazing and they are so excited that in just really a matter of hours. they are going to be here walking along the red carpet as nominees. it's really such an exciting time here because it's just the red carpet and you have so many people here who are working to make it perfect so that when these two nominees from the bay area walk down. it's going to be a night to remember alberto scott funnel look up this is luca wanna five movies that could win the oscar this year. best animated feature film developed here at pixar studios in emeryville the film's director enrico casarosa and producer andrea. warren told me they are still trying to process it. all it really is a dream come true to be nominated for an oscar. i mean, i'm a kid from south dakota. i grew up watching the oscars. it was kind of a thing me and my mom and sister always did and even if the time i didn't even
5:18 pm
really dare to dream that i would be a part of hollywood i felt so far. from that world. it just seemed impossible to be a part of it and rico's been nominated for an oscar before for his short film la luna. and still it doesn't feel completely real. part sea monster and both are trying to keep that a secret during a summer onhe italian riviera. now this sea monstereners felt like the perfect prism a metaphor to represent anything. we might be feeling different feeling ashamed of feeling that we're not really showing all of ourselves and friendship is really what is friendship is like someone who's actually seeing for all of you. it's been his summers summers ss italian coast with his best friend who really is named alberto.
5:19 pm
i was certainly a little bit sheltered and a little bit shy when i was growing up. so i really met a real life trouble maker who got me out of my comfort zone. we hope alberto and luca are still friends, but we know alberto and enrico are here. they are on a recent trip to italy. what did he think of the film and seeing your relationship portrayed that way? he's very touched he described the scene after seeing the movie where you started solving very he was very very touching and he got very very emotional and it's his wife had to really kind of pat him on the show during calming down and rico first pitch the idea for luca 10 years ago in 2012. so it's been a journey to say the least one covid-19. almost brought to a stop many many different foods couldn't work the way they used to so you to find a new way like recording actors we have to do it from their closets right? it's kind of some some madness. i read that somebody was doing
5:20 pm
something from the closet and you even have to tell them not to hit the hangers. something that's right. that's jack. dylan granger a voice of alberto. wonderful actor. yeah, which is his mom's closet. andrea says the final project is a reflection of the entire team's experiences of friendship otherness and acceptance. what's amazing about the collaborative process of filmmaking here at pixar is that everybody's bringing those insights those memories those stories and it just makes it richer and deeper. so as a crew we connect and then we try to put that in the film all those moments creating an unforgettable film an oscar nomination and hopefully an oscar win. i feel like just being at the oscar nominees lunch. in the company of such great filmmakers and actors is truly such an honor and it would be amazing to win. there's no doubt about it. and as you can see, they are
5:21 pm
hard at work here on the red carpet getting ready for oscar sunday so much excitement here and andrea told me she's had such a memorable time already being a nominee. she told me they have the class photo where all the nominees are, you know together for a photo and she happened to be next to will smith. she told me he kissed her cheek grabbed her head and she was like, oh my gosh, i can't believe this is happening. so she's like whether we went or not. been such an amazing exper. parents, but i hope they win. i'm hoping that they take home the win for the bay area at the dolby theater in los angeles kumasi aaron abc 7 news for i would be awesome. great job karmasi. look forward to your reports all weekend. awesome. all right again, the oscars are on sunday in kamasi will have special coverage for us all weekend long right here on abc 7 news, and it should be a nice night to cozy up in front of the tv. that's true. sandy patel's tracking the forecast for us for the weekend. yeah. we have a storm coming on sunday. so it's perfect timing to enjoy. the oscars from home while you watch the rain. dandanama. i want to show you the forecast
5:22 pm
for oscar sunday. the red carpet will not get wet. it's going to be partly cloudy and mild low 70s just outside the theater there and then later on at night. yeah, we're tracking a storm that's coming in on sunday after 11 pm. they will start to see rain down in southern, california here in the bay area. we're going to see it sooner than that on live doppler 7. we do have some patchy fog out there along the coastline the breeze. we expected gusty once again 27 to 28 miles an hour from san francisco to sfo. now these sea breeze along with some late day breaking up of the marine layer. if you will, it didn't completely clear at the coast initially so mid 50s there at the coast inland areas in the mid and upper 70s vacaville getting up into the low 80s. so we are seeing quite a range of temperatures and here are the beautiful views from sutro to tam vollmer pier 39. you can see a little bit of that fog linger. and from our east bay hills camera a little bit of haze as well as we look back towards
5:23 pm
sutro tower highlights combination of fog and clouds tomorrow storm arrives sunday afternoon evening. it's still going to be unsettled on monday if you're getting away. here's a hawaiian airlines forecast increasing clouds breezy at the coast lows 60s to mid 70s honolulu looking at 82 warm sunshine, new york city heavy rain 51 chicago isolated snow showers 36 in los angeles mid 70s with mainly sunny skies tomorrow fog start off the morning. we're going to see mainly 40s along with the higher clouds and then in the afternoon, you're looking at upper 50s to the upper 70s. it is dry for your saturday outdoor plants now sunday things change. it's a light level one sunday afternoon through monday moderate rain at times gusty winds slippery morning commute for monday. that's when we have the chance for thunder and hail timing it out. three o'clock. it's already in the north bay approaching the san francisco, san mateo coast by six o'clock. it's pretty much raining pops of heavier rain in orange and yellow as head towards monday some scattered showers continuing so keep that in mind.
5:24 pm
monday is going to be off and on showers and in terms of rainfall totals you're looking at anywhere from about a quarter of an inch to a six tenths of an inch, but wetter locations 9/10 to just over an inch in the santa cruz mountains winds will come up gusting out of the south to 40 miles an hour 11 am sunday even stronger close to 50 miles an hour sunday late afternoon evening. so be prepared tie any loose objects you may have out there. that could get blown away by the wind accuweather 7-day forecast fog and clouds. a little mist is not out of the question sunday morning or drizzle and then that storm comes in in the afternoon evening going into monday. it's gonna be a wet windy one. this could be the wettest. we've seen since the start of the year, believe it or not and then we'll dry out midweek and warm it back up. so this storm i think has more energy than the previous storm. so we've seen this year and we haven't seen a lot as you both both know on the dan. academy award for best forecast goes to thank you sandia. you're welcome.
