against several members of n what he says is a statewide theft ring. ama: tarah campbell spoke with the state attorney general today. reporter: officers arrested eight suspects in los angeles monday. one is still at large. the attorney general said he is confident they have the evidence needed to secure a conviction and these crimes could carry a sentence anywhere from 12-19 years in prison. >> this was a very sophisticated organized crime ring. selling product overseas. reporter: prosecutors shared these photos showing some of the more than $150,000 in stolen merchandise investigators seized on monday along with more than $60,000 in cash. >> this is a big deal. these were hundreds of thousands of dollars being stolen.

reporter: the criminals targeting major retailers leak this j.c. penny in pleasanton. the list goes on. >> lulu lemon and multiple don'ts from our southern counties to our central to northern. this was a major operation. reporter: a major operation that included alameda, sanity mateo and santa clara counties. a joint effort including c.h.p.'s orszed task force and local law enforcement. >> retailers are starting to track their product and they will turn that information over so that the task forces can follow that product and make an arrest. reporter: retailers doing what they can to tampa down on an overwhelming problem. >> we're seeing more and more retailers hiring armed security guards. it is taking away from that

shopping experience. reporter: and she says every arrest matters when it comes to retail theft. >> any time me make arrests it makes a little bit of a dent. reporter: the attorney general is confident the charge also go a long way in deterring more large scale retail theft. >> for most of the individuals involved it will be a range of 12-19 years of prison. >> the arrests come at a critical time. she is worried as more consume rs start to take matteres into their own hands. >> that's what is really scary. if we start seeing this vigilante justice throughout because people are getting fed up witnessing this retail theft over and over again, we'll have a whole other set of problems. reporter: these suspects were all charged in los angeles county and could face charges outside the state. the attorney i general said because of some of the conduct and where it took place, that tt

a potential. ama: to breaking news the east bay where more than two dozen people including children have been displaced because of a fire. it happened in and jobbing around 8:45 tonight. fortunately no one was hurt. contra kosta fires says the blaze is out. the cause is under having. dan: a developing story. three pittsburg police officers are on administrative leave after an investigation into criminal misconduct. the by the fbi and the contra costa county district attorney's office. it involves at least one antioch police officer. the da provided details but in a statement says, the broad range of offenses under investigation involve crimes of moral turpitude.

and will give a major address on the ukrainian crisis. download the abc7 news mobile app when it happens. ama: a bay area nonprofit has helped to save hundreds of animals in ukraine since the start of the war there. tim johns says now is looking to do more. reporter: for the past month mandy allen has been tirelessly at work. >> we were not sure how we were going to do it at all. >> since 2015 they have run a nonprofit called transform a street dog that helps rescue abandoned ukrainian animals but once the invasion started their operations were turned upsidedown. in earl march she was left with 55 dogs and staff members caught in the middle of a wa war zone. >> we were able to emigrate them.

>> they partner with other animal groups in neighboring european countries and were able to get the initial batch of dogs to safety and hundreds more. she says there is still a lot more to do as the war continues to decimate the country. she showed us photos of the animals the group has saved so far. many have been adopted. they are currently in the process of trying to save at least 100 more. >> we aring planning an evacuation to romania again and another one to poland. >> but she says she could never do it without the assistance of her team. some of which she said are risking their lives to save ukraine and help. we spoke to one of them via zoom. >> if i know i can do something for the animals and i will like -- i will get another

ama: taylor hawkins, the drummer for the american rock band the foo fighters has died at the age of 50. the group announced his death tonight on social media saying they will remember him for his musical spirit and infectious laughter. the cause of his death has not been released. he leaves behind his wife and three children. dan: in the north bay, a redwood tree known as the pioneer tree was destroyed by fire. it was believed to be 800 years old and is one of the last few remaining old growth redwoods. park employees devastated by what happened. >> it is upsetting because they are s so old and so big andujar borrow great life within them.

afternoon with light rain and shoots up, looking at moderate rain in the early evening hours. it will pretty much be the theme as we go into sunday. from our east bay hills camera, look at the stunning view. fog has been slow to come back into the picture and it will be there in patches tomorrow morning. we'll call it dry tomorrow. mix of fog and clouds. it is going to be unsettled monday. your temperatures now in the 40's and the 50's as we take a look at your morning numbers. they are going to be pretty much similar in the 40's, 50's range with some fog and higher clouds. for the afternoon, you disart out with patchy fog and then in the afternoon, you're looking at sunshine and increasing high clouds. numbers range from up the 50's coastside to the upper 70's inland. a level one storm comes in saturday afternoon, evening, going into monday. on monday we have the opportunity of thunder and hail.
