what we know about their involvement in the bay area. dan: a bay area nonprofit has helped save hundreds of animals in the ukraine. how the they are trying to do more. i'll have the update coming up. >> anonymous no more. the title and message behind a project celebrating wombhood in the south bay. >> tracking a spring storm for the weekend. what part will be wet and windy coming up. abc news at 11:00 starts now. >> this is abc7 news. dan: a big bust amid the ongoing to fight against organized retail theft. the california attorney general announcing felony charges against several members of n what he says is a statewide theft ring. ama: tarah campbell spoke with the state attorney general today. reporter: officers arrested eight suspects in los angeles

monday. one is still at large. the attorney general said he is confident they have the evidence needed to secure a conviction and these crimes could carry a sentence anywhere from 12-19 years in prison. >> this was a very sophisticated organized crime ring. selling product overseas. reporter: prosecutors shared these photos showing some of the more than $150,000 in stolen merchandise investigators seized on monday along with more than $60,000 in cash. >> this is a big deal. these were hundreds of thousands of dollars being stolen. reporter: the criminals targeting major retailers leak this j.c. penny in pleasanton. the list goes on. >> lulu lemon and multiple don'ts from our southern counties to our central to

northern. this was a major operation. reporter: a major operation that included alameda, sanity mateo and santa clara counties. a joint effort including c.h.p.'s orszed task force and local law enforcement. >> retailers are starting to track their product and they will turn that information over so that the task forces can follow that product and make an arrest. reporter: retailers doing what they can to tampa down on an overwhelming problem. >> we're seeing more and more retailers hiring armed security guards. it is taking away from that shopping experience. reporter: and she says every arrest matters when it comes to retail theft. >> any time me make arrests it makes a little bit of a dent. reporter: the attorney general is confident the charge also go a long way in deterring more

large scale retail theft. >> for most of the individuals involved it will be a range of 12-19 years of prison. >> the arrests come at a critical time. she is worried as more consume rs start to take matteres into their own hands. >> that's what is really scary. if we start seeing this vigilante justice throughout because people are getting fed up witnessing this retail theft over and over again, we'll have a whole other set of problems. reporter: these suspects were all charged in los angeles county and could face charges outside the state. the attorney i general said because of some of the conduct and where it took place, that tt a potential. ama: to breaking news the east bay where more than two dozen people including children have been displaced because of a

fire. it happened in and jobbing around 8:45 tonight. fortunately no one was hurt. contra kosta fires says the blaze is out. the cause is under having. dan: a developing story. three pittsburg police officers are on administrative leave after an investigation into criminal misconduct. the by the fbi and the contra costa county district attorney's office. it involves at least one antioch police officer. the da provided details but in a statement says, the broad range of offenses under investigation involve crimes of moral turpitude. the da will review current and former cases involving the officers to see if they are compromised. ama: rain is on the way. when is it going to get here? let's find out when we will see showers where you live. sandhya: timing is everything.

russia may be backing off its original goal. forces around kyiv have fuelen to defensive positions and lost full control. in a new address, volodymyr zelenskyy said the heroic armed forces dealt powerful blose and significant losses to the enemy. russia is saying the purpose is to liberate the dom bas region. claiming it never -- donbas region. claim it never had plans of taking over kyiv. officialofficials in mair opel - >> they want more than donbas. they want more than ukraine. it is a lie what they say.

tim johns says now is looking to do more. reporter: for the past month mandy allen has been tirelessly at work. >> we were not sure how we were going to do it at all. >> since 2015 they have run a nonprofit called transform a street dog that helps rescue abandoned ukrainian animals but once the invasion started their operations were turned upsidedown. in earl march she was left with 55 dogs and staff members caught in the middle of a wa war zone. >> we were able to emigrate them. >> they partner with other animal groups in neighboring european countries and were able to get the initial batch of dogs to safety and hundreds more. she says there is still a lot more to do as the war continues to decimate the country. she showed us photos of the

animals the group has saved so far. many have been adopted. they are currently in the process of trying to save at least 100 more. >> we aring planning an evacuation to romania again and another one to poland. >> but she says she could never do it without the assistance of her team. some of which she said are risking their lives to save ukraine and help. we spoke to one of them via zoom. >> if i know i can do something for the animals and i will like -- i will get another achievement, then i do it. reporter: despite the challenges they face, allen remains determined not just to save as many animals as possible but also the people she has come to know and lover. >> i've been doing this for four years and i'm friends with all of these people. so when this crisis started, i'm

ama: taylor hawkins, the drummer for the american rock band the foo fighters has died at the age of 50. the group announced his death tonight on social media saying they will remember him for his musical spirit and infectious laughter. the cause of his death has not been released. he leaves behind his wife and three children. dan: in the north bay, a redwood tree known as the pioneer tree was destroyed by fire. it was believed to be 800 years old and is one of the last few remaining old growth redwoods. park employees devastated by what happened. >> it is upsetting because they are s so old and so big andujar borrow great life within them.

-- dan: it collapsed unable to withstand the damage from the fire. an illegal camp site may have caused that fire. park rangers are looking for information leading to the person who started the fire. ama: celebrating female fleersd santa clara county. visitors can find artwork across san jose that recognizes the diverse women who have helped i would have the valley. it is part of the long-awaited womanhood project. >> there is in artwork across downtown san jose. the pieces and faces many may not recognize and stories most may be unfamiliar with. but that is the motivation behind the womanhood project two years in the making. >> we know about the amazing women who have been a part of our county and our city but we

also want to know about the women who helped them. reporter: leaning on impactful local contributions, the project launched by santa clara county's office of women's policy celebrates 25 women on banners and window displace designed by 13 artists. >> these are the folks our community is built on. their sweat and blood and tears made it a great place to live. reporter: throughout history women have largely been stuck in the background but anonymous no more as the project title and hopefully takeaway. >> i think it is ok for them to say like i have never seen someone like that before. i want to find out more. reporter: honoree sarah fernando says public sculpture often depicts men. >> by having this type of reputation that is us stepping

about this. it initially starts out late afternoon with light rain and shoots up, looking at moderate rain in the early evening hours. it will pretty much be the theme as we go into sunday. from our east bay hills camera, look at the stunning view. fog has been slow to come back into the picture and it will be there in patches tomorrow morning. we'll call it dry tomorrow. mix of fog and clouds. it is going to be unsettled monday. your temperatures now in the 40's and the 50's as we take a look at your morning numbers. they are going to be pretty much similar in the 40's, 50's range with some fog and higher clouds. for the afternoon, you disart out with patchy fog and then in the afternoon, you're looking at sunshine and increasing high clouds. numbers range from up the 50's coastside to the upper 70's inland. a level one storm comes in saturday afternoon, evening, going into

on monday we have the opportunity of thunder and hail. let's time it out for you. sunday morning could start out with drizzle and then by 5:00 moderate rain starts to move onto the coastline. ku8 k8 everyone is pretty much dealing with the wet weather. widespread rain and then a little bit of a breather comes in. showery in nature nature. could see some thunderstorms. that part of the system is going down south. we'll see a few showers rotating back to the north going back into monday night and as you take a look at the rainfall projections i think this is going to be one of those systems that is going to give everyone a decent chance. almost a half inch to an inch of rain. the hills could pick up an inch or more. winds could pick up out of the south. 40-mile-per-hour winds. close to 50 4:00 p.m. sunday. winds will be gusty late sunday night and ease up monday.

dan: we are counting down to oscar sunday. you can watch it on abc7 of course. coverage begins sunday at 5:00. the big show starts at 5:00 in the afternoon. the bay area has films up for some big awards. ama: we got a chance to speak with the director and producer for one of the films nominated for best animated film. reporter: this is luca, one of five movies that could win the oscar for best animated feature

film. the film's director enrico and producer andrea told me they are still trying to process it all. >> it really is a dream come true to be nominated for an oscar. i'm a kid from south dakota. i grew up watching the oscars. >> enreik has been nominated before for a short film, laluna. >> doesn't feel completely real. reporter: luca tells the story of a young boy named luca and his best friend alberto and both are part human and part sea honest r trying to keep it a secret. >> the sea monsterness felt like the perfect prism and metaphor to represent anything we might be feeling different and feeling ashamed of. reporter: it is a story influenced by rico's life. his best friend really is named alberto. what did he think of the film and seeing your relationship

portrayed that way? >> he got very emotional. his wife had to pat him on the shoulder and calm him down. reporter: he first pitched the idea for luca 10 years ago in 2012. it has ban journey to say the least, one covid-19 almost brought to a stop. >> many couldn't work the way they used to. you had to find a new way. reporter: it is a flexion to have entire team's experiences of friendship, otherness and acceptance. what is amazing is that everybody's bringing those insights, those memories, those stories and it just makes it richer and deeper. reporter: all of those moments creating an unforgottable film, an oscar nomination and hopefully an oscar win. dan: again, the oscars are on sunday. we'll have special coverage for us all weekend long here on abc7
