a lot to cover. we do want to get to the news starting with the war in ukraine. what some say could be a new phase in the conflict, russian forces now doubling down in eastern ukraine signaling a potential shift in their objectives. president biden in warsaw this morning holding a bilateral meeting with the polish president before visiting with refugees who have fled the fighting. and he also attended a meeting between secretaries blinken and austin and their ukrainian counterparts. before returning home, biden is expected to deliver a, quote, major address. let's get right over to abc's chief white house correspondent cecilia vega in warsaw. cecilia, good morning again. >> reporter: hi, gio. good morning again. the final day of this high stakes trip here, the president is here. you're right about the big speech he will deliver later this afternoon. let me tell you where it will take place, it's going to happen at the warsaw royal castle. this was a landmark blown up by the germans in world war ii, the symbolism will be reflected in the remarks the president gives

talking about the high stakes for europe, this urgent threat the world is facing right now and this is what national security council adviser matthew miller told whit this morning. take a listen. >> it really is a fight between democracy on one side and autocracy on the other, and one of the main points of the president's trip to europe this week was to continue to rally the free world to stand up to russian aggression. >> reporter: and this is a really busy final morning here in poland for the president. you can see there the president in a meeting with secretary of state antony blinken, defense secretary lloyd austin, their ukrainian counterparts and now also in a meeting with poland's leader, andrzej duda. the president telling -- saying on the trip here the allies staying united is what ultimately will defeat vladimir putin and will meet with refugees and that's important, something he's really wanted to do. poland taking in more than 2 million refugees in this crisis, whit. this is the president really getting to see this humanitarian need here up close. >> yeah, up close and personal. cecilia vega for us, thank you so much. and russian forces overnight

intensifying their offensive in the southeast after military officials said the main goal of the invasion is to, quote, liberate the donbas region. this raises questions about a potential shift in the war. abc's foreign correspondent james longman is in lviv with the very latest on the fighting. james, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. it does seem like russia is changing tactics here as they suffer repeated setbacks on the battlefield, moscow is now pushing for a mission reset. russia's ministry of defense said the plan all along was to focus their efforts on the donbas region in eastern ukraine but all across this country from kyiv where ukrainians have pushed back russian forces some 40 miles to kherson where russia has now lost control to kharkiv which moscow's ground forces have been unable to take, putin's war has stalled. russia has suffered devastating losses. u.s. intelligence believes as many as 10,000 of their troops may have been killed, and regular reports surface of senior officers among them. unable to advance on the ground, russia has increasingly taken out its fury from the air, irpin

has been savagely bombarded. take a look at this drone video published by local media that shows street after street in flames after shelling and in mariupol, the human toll is emerging, footage from inside the bombed theater shows the reality for so many people across the country. aerial bombardment from which there is little escape, eva. >> james longman for us inside ukraine. james, thank you. now to an important new study which found that half of women getting 3d mammograms will experience a false positive over a decade of annual screening as compared to 56% of women who are screened with 2d digital mammograms. a false positive is when a mammogram is flagged as abnormal but there is no cancer. the researchers also found that women with dense breasts, younger women and those who screened more frequently had a higher chance of a false positive. now, remember, the high rate of false positives with mammograms is nothing new, however, what this study found is that 3d mammograms are more accurate than their digital counterparts

♪ welcome back to "gma" and our oscars preparty. >> yeah, janai is already out there on the red carpet turning it up. home of the academy awards and, janai, eva has been complaining because she wants to see more of the dress. i know you tried to show us earlier. but perhaps there will be time later. you got a lot to cover, hollywood's biggest night. >> i do. i do. i'm going to back up. i hope the cameraman doesn't get upset. but, eva, it's actually a jumpsuit. there are no pockets. if there were it would be even better. good morning to you guys again. i'm here at the dolby theatre as the last-minute touches are being added before the stars descend on the red carpet, but there is one name that everyone is buzzing about, and, of course, it's queen bey. this year beyonce is nominated for best original song for "be alive" from "king richard" and she's expected to perform -- get this -- from a tennis court in compton, california, about 30 minutes from here. that's where venus and serena williams trained.

but at this point there might be more questions than answers, so will we get a red carpet moment from beyonce? will she be introduced by venus and serena? will she be singing to a crowd of young tennis hopefuls? if i head to said tennis court today, could i possibly catch a sneak peek of beyonce rehearsing? who knows? the possibilities are endless, though, so this, of course, is not beyonce's first oscar performance. she took the stage back in 2005, 2007 and 2009, and, of course, she brought the house down as queen bey does. but as we wait for all of that tomorrow night, we'll turn to what we do know, which is quite a bit. in our "gma" cover story we're getting a sneak peek behind the scenes at the oscar set. i went one-on-one with the set director who told me all about his inspiration for the design. check it out. front and center with the man designing the backdrop of hollywood's biggest night, emmy winning production designer

david korins. not only is it back at the dolby but bigger audience, live audience. how did you incorporate that into designing? >> i felt like it was important as we kind of have this revelatory return to the dolby to put community and togetherness center stages so we've literally decked over the audience and put the stage in the middle of the room, so when you win or present or perform, you're going to be standing inside of a crowd of your peers. >> reporter: korins designed the oscar set in 2019 but said he is upping the ante this year revealing each hour will have a different color palette and statement scenery pieces including swarovski crystals being the visionary behind hit productions like "hamilton," "beetlejuice" and "mrs. doubtfire," korins says he is bringing broadway stage design to hollywood. >> early on i did a lot of research about kind of optical illusions and combining those

things with old hollywood glamour. >> wait a second. >> i know those two -- those two things don't necessarily go together but the idea was, okay, whenever you're doing the academy awards, you have to deliver elegance and high drama. because of that we're forced to innovate whole new ways to shoot the show, so you're going to have cameras tracking around people involved in the show, we're going to have performances literally immersed inside of the crowd. >> reporter: and only telling "gma" about changes to the oscar statuette we'll see on stage come sunday. >> i didn't really want to put the iconic oscar on stage. i wanted to see if we could have some fun and kind of make an evolution of it. so we have two new versions of it. >> you haven't talked to anyone about this. this is top "gma" secret. >> this is top "gma" secret. all right, here it is. everyone knows that's the academy award, so we've maintained that silhouette, that elegant silhouette, but i tried to make something that felt like a sculpture, so it's almost like a beautiful silk ribbon wrapped around the sculpture and then

you get rid of the sculpture and i'm hoping people go, you know what, we've been through hard times, but the future looks incredible, let's go there. i think the show is going to be epic. >> reporter: you guys, i have to tell you, it is so cool talking with these artistic minds when it comes to design. talking with david, it was similar with talking with this woman claire on the disney cruise ship about how they use textures and different things to paint the picture for the audience, and the way they describe it is so beautiful, so much to look forward to, you guys. >> oh, we know you're going to be looking forward to that. looking like an oscar out there, thank you, janai. and now a musical detour on the road to the oscars. sebastian yatra, the voice behind "encanto's" oscar nominated song "dos oruguitas" is a busy guy making music getting ready for a world tour and performing live at the oscars tomorrow night, but he took some time to chat with us here at "gma." take a look.

[ singing in foreign language ] so, sebastian, what's going through your mind right now? >> gio, i am -- i'm just grateful, really. i'm trying to process everything. i'm excited for the performance. i'm happy to be the first colombian that's going to be on that stage ever and also to represent spanish language. >> reporter: the song, which tells the story of two caterpillars in love is really about letting go to let the miracles happen. >> the song just makes me cry every single time. what does "dos oruguitas" mean to you? >> it represents self-love, transformation, and it also represents how loving yourself and letting yourself be your best version and transforming will also teach you how to love

[ laughter ] >> all right, guys, we are going to turn to fashion because, of course, as everyone is buzzing as we head into sunday, we're not only talking about the gold, who is going to take home the gold, but we're talking red hot red carpet, so we have got joe zee joining us to talk all of the fashion trends that we can expect to see on hollywood's biggest night. joe, thank you so much for being here with us. before we hit on the trends there have been quite a few award shows already, of course, where celebrities have been showing off their style, so who are you most excited to see on

the oscars red carpet? >> well, i'm actually excited about this season completely because there's such a great group of ingenues, first-timers and people who are breaking out in the movies and the red carpet and the world of fashion. ariana debose is sweeping up all the awards but also really becoming such a fashion style icon. i love her and, of course, her co-star in the movie rachel ziegler and there's just such a great group of people i want to see on the carpet this year. >> okay, so let's talk about trends. i know that you think -- that sleek is always kind of in but you feel that we could see a lot more volume coming back. >> yes, i was actually calling this sort of self-imposed social distancing. after three years or two years here's your built-in one with all the fabric. i love it. listen, there's something sort of romantic and princess about it.

we've seen j. lo wear it, jada pinkett smith, carey mulligan but it's a new style that people find that is easy and strangely comfortable. >> strangely comfortable. you are completely right because you can hide in those big poofy dresses. okay, so up next you expect to see some more structure in the form of corsets, bustiers? >> yeah, i think early madonna. you know, really seeing sort of your underwear and corset and all that built-in structure on the outside, and i think who did it so well is kristen stewart who, of course, is nominated for this year for "spencer," but you've seen gaga, carrie washington, i mean it's just a really flattering silhouette in a way that you can do it and still get a lot of design into your gown. >> okay, so, joe, we have to talk color because we love a pop of color, but there is a particular color that you think that we could be seeing, and it's called "legally blonde" pink, my favorite shade of pink.

>> yes, barbie pink, "legally blonde" pink, elle wood pink. i think we all know the shade so well and what i love about this color is back in january in paris valentino, which is a designer that a lot of stars wear on the carpet, did an entire couture show in nothing but this color, and, of course, we've seen such "it" girls like zendaya wear it, and she's done it beautifully and one of my favorites from this season, ariana debose and can we not forget about the guys. look at jeremy strong from "succession." he's looking great in this color as well. the reality is everything can wear it and it stands out. can you wear pink on red? yeah, i say yes. >> i say yes too, and, joe, you just mentioned zendaya. zendaya always just nails it on the red carpet, so there is so much to look forward to. >> 100%. >> thank you so much, joe, for joining us, and before the big

fantastic as they are as a mocktail. if you want to bring it up you can add cuban rum for ricky ricardo. you know what i mean? shake that up a little bit and once you do that you'll add it into your cocktail. your glass right in here. simple. beautiful colors and pop it with a little bit of lime seltzer as well until you get a nice gorgeous color, and this is called the i love juicy or the i love lucy, however you want to do it and the best part is pomegranate seeds as a garnish add fiber so don't forget. >> yeah. >> appetizers. >> the "licorice pizza" theme is going on. california style barbecue pizza. what are we doing? >> "licorice pizza" was taking place in california so i wanted to add a tribute to the california chicken, barbecue chicken pizza. this is pull apart bread. you'll get a knife and go around it till you get square grids then we'll stuff it with chicken, of course, barbecue sauce, go ahead and add the barbecue to the chicken and melted butter in there then

we'll elevate it with cheese and the cheese i like to use is the boring mozzarella, i like jarlsberg and a little elevation. once you have it, you mix it in altogether and have this kind of cheesiness to it with that jarlsberg and use your fingers or a spoon, whatever you want, inside of this grid of bread you'll stuff all the stuff. i'll do one stuffing here. >> just stuff it in there. >> open it up and just stuff it all throughout. the butter and cheese in there and you pop them into the oven. once you pop it into the oven -- >> i need a helping hand. >> wrap it with aluminum foil. don't get any on the tux, it's rented, i hear. >> exactly, exactly. >> once you add it to the oven you squirt more barbecue sauce on top then you grab that and you just kind of just pull it apart just like this. >> perfect. >> everybody gets their own cheese and digs in. eats with their fingers. >> smells delicious, by the way. >> something sweet in honor of "king richard," tennis ball cake pops. >> doughnut holes just like this and put a little bit of the chocolate in there. this will allow the doughnut
