aiming on the santa cruz mountains, they will see the heaviest rain south of santa cruz from watsonville and big sur. 52 in oakland, 53 in fremont. upper 40's in the north bay. that brings temperatures up as much as 12 degrees warmer by the delta. of one system on the way with the drizzle and missed throughout the afternoon along the hills, otherwise it is this evening. sunday night into monday, rain moderate at times. gusty wind through early monday morning. we've got a mixture of clouds and sun for the east bay, south bay. tracking the rain by 5:00, 6:00. talk totals and look at wind gusts coming up. liz: breaking news. police are investigating to shootings within one block of each other. there is one victim in the first shooting just before 2:45 this morning at east end carla street and south 4th street. the second shooting was a minute later involving a police officer . street closures are expected to

come officers have not released any details. we will bring you updates as soon as we get them. developing this morning, ukrainian president zelenskyy is emphasizing ukraine's need for more weapons, especially planes and tanks. he said the west needs to supply those things so his country can defend itself against russian forces. reporter: as as as as as of ukraine continues, president joe biden with choice words for russia's president vladimir putin. >> he is a butcher. reporter: those remarks as to missiles rock the western city of lviv, hitting an oil depot. >> this is an oil depot, you can see the flames burning. the city was meant to be a sanctuary for thousands, now it feels like the war has come to them. reporter: president zelenskyy continues to stress, his country needs more weapons, calling for 1% of nato's arsenal.

saturday's attacks on lviv less than 50 miles from ukraine's border with poland, president biden wrapping up his trip on saturday, visiting warsaw and sitting down for his first meeting with ukrainian officials since the russian invasion began. he also reassured poland's leaders, seeing the u.s. has an obligation under nato to defend its allies. >> a sacred commitment that relates to every member of nato. reporter: he spent part of the day meeting with refugees before addressing a large crowd and issuing a warning to putin. >> don't even think about abouto to one single inch of nato territory. this man cannot remain in power. reporter: the white house try to clarify the remarks, saying the president was not calling for regime change in russia. abc news, new york. liz: in the east bay, a polish

school is showing support for ukrainian children who fled the country. we went to walnut creek to capture students in action as they put together messages of hope. >> we love it, it is beautiful. reporter: from toddlers to teenagers. students at the polish school in walnut creek are getting behind the children of ukraine. >> we are writing we are with you, take care. we are on your side. reporter: the plan is to send these messages to poland to the children who fled ukraine. >> made lots of arts and crafts, we got these. reporter: there are more than 130 students enrolled at the polish school. they learn everything from the language to traditional dance. >> all of us, we have family in poland, some of us friends or family in ukraine. reporter: she is a member of the school board and says teachers are focusing lessons on ukraine. >> we need to talk about it

because it is important. reporter: students are eager to learn and help, like this nine-year-old. >> today, we learned about poland stands with ukraine and about how we can help. reporter: every letter carefully crafted, every lesson listen to. how does it make you feel to know there's a war going on? >> it makes me uncomfortable because maybe the next time russia attacks it might be our country. reporter: feelings of fear and frustration. these drawings expressing a wide range of emotions. >> i feel really angry. because, why would someone start a war? reporter: doing all they can to support the children of ukraine, even asking to send this message right now.

cloudy and mild to start. rain and wind this evening, slick commute monday morning. to be even a thunderstorm further south to get ended the upper elevations. there is the forecast for early this morning with the cloud cover, maybe a few areas of spotty showers throughout the afternoon. as we look at 5:00 in the afternoon, it is raining from sonoma to marin, pushing into san francisco. the winds begin to pick up, the wind advisory by 2:00 this afternoon, southwinds 20 to 30 miles an hour. accompanying all of the rain, isn't this a beautiful site? from the san mateo coast pushing to the east bay, south bay's included. a quick mover from west to east, overnight we get more showers and slick roads for the monday morning commute. the unstable air with some sun allowing for perhaps a thunderstorm. rainfall amounts pretty solid from 6/10 to three quarters of an inch, san mateo that has not changed much.

come in and hear it, it makes them feel better. reporter: the position of the piano is about as important as the music. he is right next to the covid vaccination clinic, so people can relax awaiting their 15 minutes after the shot. the staff is appreciative of the experience their volunteer creates. >> all the way around, it is great to be able to have volunteers back. especially begin to enjoy great music that lists everybody spirits. we are grateful to have him. reporter: he says he will continue to play as long as he can and is thankful for the impact he makes in his community. >> people don't have to wear masks over their ears. the music is unfiltered, ultimately my payment is being able to give back to the community, help people be calm through hard times and contribute something. reporter: thank you, piano man. you have them feeling all right.

liz: the state has spent -- that was gorgeous, i've got to say. moving on, the state has sent millions of covid test out to students and staff returning from spring break. this is part of governor newsom's a smarter plan, including keeping a stockpile of more than 14 million test have been sent out to homes to 7 million students and faculty members. the state sent out personal protective equipment. in the east bay, women firefighters hosted a camp for girls interested in a career in the fire industry. grades nine to 12 can participate, the weekend event introduces hands-on fire training designed for teens and includes hose handling and lifesaving skills. >> we give these young women a chance to build confidence using power tools including chainsaws. the goal is to make them feel empowered and confident. liz: the event is put on by a group called norcal women in the fire service. there is another camp today at the contra costa fire training center.

investigating the first homicide of the year. investigators say fight friday night inside a restaurant lead to a shooting. when officers arrived, they found a person shot multiple times outside the bar. the man later died at the hospital. police have not identified the suspected shooter, anyone with information is asked to call san leandro police. south bay, community said farewell to ricky san jose police officer and former state football star backer. -- packer. ♪ his funeral was held at redemption church in san jose, the 24-year-old was found dead at his home earlier this month. his cause of death remains under investigation. nurses and daly city are planning to go on strike this week. the california nurses association says workers have seen repeated violations of safe staffing laws and the hospital

area history. >> the legends of this race. reporter: since 1905, athletes from the bay area and the world have run in the race, the annual 7.5 mile trail race from miller valley to stinson beach. >> before automobiles, beore a radio. reporter: the oldest race in the country. for all the fame and recognition, few know about its place in history. in women's history and the fight to give women equal opportunity to participate in sports. >> 100 years ago, women were not allowed to compete because it was unhealthy for the reproductive health. reporter: four decades, they were not a lot to write in any race. people thought it was dangerous and undignified. but there was one exception, five-year period called the hike.

>> it had to beto beto beto be because people did not think women could race. they didn't walk the trail, they ran it. reporter: some and heels. >> they were wearing high heeled leather boots and heavy woolen skirts. reporter: she is a member of the race committee, she and a historian share a love of studying the pioneering women. >> they called in a hike, it was a race. reporter: the best time, one hour and 12 minutes. >> if you look at the results page, the woman running one 12 will finish quite well. quite well. to this day. reporter: speaking of today, this year marks 100 years since the last hike. it ended after pushback from detractors. >> when they finish the race and looking they were huffing and puffing, they said women cannot do this. they are jeopardizing their health. i was shocked taking that back.

reporter: redwood high end a member of troop 1, 1 of the first boy scouts of america troops to include girls. inspired by the stories of these women, she decided to make the dipsea hike at the hallmark of her eagle scout project. she is hand making bibs for a commemorative centennial hike taking place april 30. >> it is helping pay homage to it they used to do, which is handmade fabric bibs for all participants and runners. >> one of the most important things i wanted to do was share girls of today what pioneering young women before us did. i thought, what better match than to have pioneering young women of 2022 working on a project to celebrate the pioneering of women of 1922. liz: the hike is open to anyone

who wants to pay homage to the minute -- women in 1922. participants are encouraged to wear. costumes. these are photos from the first one in 2018, among the crowd descendants of the original runners. >> it still gives me goosebumps. the daughter of the winter in 1918 --winner in 1918 she came with the picture no one had seen of her mother holding the winner's cup from 1918. which the mother donated in world war ii to scrap metal drive. the trophy was there anymore. the picture was. reporter: that woman was edith hickman. another 50 years until she and other women are once again given the opportunity to race. the change came after an incident at the boston marathon when kathy switzer, disguised in a baggy sweat suit, was caught running in the race. video of the race director tackling her was caught on

camera. >> this created a big to do, people said it is time for women to be allowed in races. reporter: it took another half-century for women to be accepted into the racing community makes it hard for him to say the dipsea hike paid the way. >> they tried, did not succeed. reporter: it is no less remarkable and inspiring. and a reminder that much like karin who wears a uniform that up until a few years ago was only for young men, the importance of pushing and paving the way. slowly.will come, even if what do you hope people take away from your project? >> when it means to fight for your rights, fight for your daughters, granddaughters, future generations. everything you do leaves a legacy. >> i think about the women in the original hike looking forward to now.
