pointing a gun at another person. in arriving officer fired his weapon, hitting the suspect at least one time. the suspect is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. officers have not released any details. developing this morning, ukrainian president zelenskyy is emphasizing ukraine's need for more weapons, especially planes and tanks. he said the west needs to supply those things so his country can defend itself against russian forces. reporter: as russia's invasion of ukraine continues, president joe biden with choice words for russia's president vladimir putin. >> he is a butcher. reporter: those remarks as two missiles rock the western city of lviv, hitting an oil depot. >> this is an oil depot, you can see the flames burning. the city was meant to be a

feels like the war has come to them. reporter: president zelenskyy continues to stress, his country needs more weapons, calling for 1% of nato's arsenal. saturday's attacks on lviv less than 50 miles from ukraine's border with poland, president biden wrapping up his trip on saturday, visiting warsaw and sitting down for his first meeting with ukrainian officials since the russian invasion began. he also reassured poland's leaders, saying the u.s. has an obligation under nato to defend its allies. >> a sacred commitment that relates to every member of nato. reporter: he spent part of the day meeting with refugees before addressing a large crowd and issuing a warning to putin. >> don't even think about going to one single inch of nato territory. for god's sake this man cannot , remain in power. reporter: the white house try to clarify the remarks, saying the

president was not calling for regime change in russia. abc news, new york. liz: ukraine and russia have agreed to hold a new round of in person peace talks in turkey this week. it is a sign of possible progress. meantime in the east bay, a polish school is showing support for ukrainian children who fled the country. we went to walnut creek toutmef >> we love it, it is beautiful. teenagers. students at the polish school in walnut creek are getting behind the children of ukraine. >> we are writing we are with you, take care. we are on your side. reporter: the plan is to send these messages to poland to the children who fled ukraine. >> made lots of arts and crafts, we got these. reporter: there are more than 130 students enrolled at the polish school.

they learn everything from the language to traditional dance. >> all of us, we have family in poland, some of us friends or family in ukraine. reporter: she is a member of the school board and says teachers are focusing lessons on ukraine. >> we need to talk about it because it is important. reporter: students are eager to learn and help, like this nine-year-old. >> today, we learned about how poland stands with ukraine and about how we can help. reporter: every letter carefully crafted, every lesson listen to. how does it make you feel to know there's a war going on? >> it makes me uncomfortable because maybe the next time russia attacks it might be our country. reporter: feelings of fear and frustration.

people we spoke with said they are happy to see things getting back to normal. >> i'm excited it's back. everything has been so shut off for so long, it is a sign of hope to know something like the oscars is happening and being someone who geeks out over celebrities and the oscars being able to be in the same spot where it is happening this year is so exciting. kumasi: how cool is it to see the oscars getting ready? >> it is super amazing. my friends and everybody would agree. i am excited to see beyoncé, i've been a fan since i was a little gay boy. i'm excited for the oscars to be in hollywood, it's going to be great. >> it's exciting to see them back in person, seeing traffic. there wasn't traffic last year, it gives a sense of normalcy in l.a. kumasi: the oscars start at 5:00 on abc 7.

anticipation. everything has to be perfect ahead of hollywood's biggest night. liz: their exciting, thank you, enjoy. ahead of the ceremony, several local theaters around the bay area are gearing up for watch parties. tim johns visited one of them and tells us why this year's show is more important than ever. reporter: inside the theater, the oscar buzz is alive and well. on sunday, they will host a watch party with a twist. it is called drag the oscars in flesh and -- and will be a viewing party mixed with the drag show. >> they are going to surprise us with a number of characters in entertainers and fun hosting of a fun event. reporter: the owner of the theater says the party will be the perfect way to watch hollywood's biggest night with friends and family. >> it becomes a community event. reporter: the event is about more than the oscars. it is about a way to ensure theaters stay around. like many other businesses, the

at 8:00, then at 8:00, then at 9:00 after the awards. at 11:00, we have local reaction plus the days headlines and the latest on the storm. we this morning, searchers have recovered the second blast -- black box in the plane crash. all people on board died. it scattered debris and created a 65 foot deep pit in the side of a mountain. searchers were looking for the flight data recorder after finding the cockpit voice recorder four days ago. both devices should help investigators find out what caused the plane to plummet. in the east bay, police are investigating the first homicide of the year. investigators say a fight friday night inside a bar lead to a shooting. when officers arrived, they found a person shot multiple times outside the bar. the man later died at the hospital. police have not identified the suspected shooter, anyone with information is asked to call san leandro police.

in the south bay, community said farewell to rookie san jose police officer and former state football star packer. ♪ his funeral was held at redemption church in san jose, the 24-year-old was found dead at his home earlier this month. his cause of death remains under investigation. still ahead, disappointing news for encanto fans. i lin-manuel maranda announced he will miss the oscars even that he said he made it to hollywood. a live look outside, time is nine: 36. liz: welcome back, live look from the adobe theater in hollywood. preparations underway for the oscars. march is women's history month, time to share stories of people who paved the way for women's rights and equality. the dipsea race is a beloved bay area tradition, what you might not know is the dipsea hike, separate opportunity they gave women the opportunity to run before they were allowed to participate in races. the trail goes from mill valley up more than 1300 feet before descending to the beach. i spoke with the women bringing awareness to this piece of bay area history. >> the legends of this race. liz: since 1905, athletes from

the bay area and the world have run in the race, the annual 7.5 mile trail race from miller -- mill valley to stinson beach. >> before automobiles, before radio. liz: it is the oldest trail race in the country. for all the fame and recognition, few know about its place in history. in women's history and the fight to give women equal opportunity to participate in sports. >> 100 years ago, women were not allowed to compete because it was unhealthy for the reproductive health. liz: for decades, they were not allowed to run in any race. people thought it was dangerous and undignified. for the dipsea, there is one exception. a five-year period called the dipsea hike. it had to be called a hike, because people did not think women could race. they didn't walk the trail, they ran it.

high and a member of troop 1, 1 of the first boy scouts of america troops to include girls. inspired by the stories of these women, she decided to make the dipsea hike at the hallmark of her eagle scout project. she is hand making bibs for a commemorative centennial hike taking place april 30. >> it is helping pay homage to what they used to do, which is handmade fabric bibs for all participants and runners. >> one of the most important things i wanted to do was share with girls of today what pioneering young women before us did. i thought, what better match than to have pioneering young women of 2022 working on a project to celebrate the pioneering young women of 1922. liz: the hike is open to anyone who wants to pay homage to the 1922. -- women of 1922. participants are encouraged to

wear period costumes. these are photos from the first one in 2018, among the crowd descendants of the original runners. >> it still gives me goosebumps. the daughter of the winner in 1918 came. this is a 100 year gap, she came with the picture no one had seen of her mother holding the winner's cup from 1918. which the mother donated in world war ii to scrap metal drive. the trophy was not there anymore. the picture was. liz: that woman was edith hickman. it would be another 50 years until she and other women are once again given the opportunity to race. the change came after an incident at the boston marathon when kathy switzer, disguised in a baggy sweat suit, was caught running in the race. video of the race director tackling her was caught on camera. >> this created a big to do, people said it is time for women

to be allowed in races. liz: the fact it took another half-century for women to be accepted into the racing community makes it hard for him to say the dipsea hike paid the -- paved the way. >> they tried, did not succeed. liz: it is undoubtedly no less remarkable and inspiring. and a reminder that much like karin, who wears a uniform that up until a few years ago was only for young men, the importance of pushing and paving the way. change will come, even if slowly. what do you hope people take away from your project? >> really what it means to fight for your rights, fight for your daughters, granddaughters, future generations. everything you do leaves a legacy. >> i think about the women in the original hike looking forward to now. i can feel them looking out over all of this and being so proud. ♪

watsonville south as the rain rates are going to increase and the area of low pressure pushes to the center coast overnight tonight and all day monday. while we have scattered showers left over monday, main activity is to the south. southern california, if the oscars were tomorrow, they are getting over an inch of rain, maybe two inches. from 2:00 this afternoon to 5:00 monday morning, anywhere from 20 to 30 miles an hour with gusts to 45. elsewhere without the it wind advisory, it is breezy. windfall -- rainfall amounts from three quarters of an inch on the peninsula, almost an inch in half moon bay. three quarters of an inch or more, by an inch of rain for novato into the east bay, a solid half-inch. hopefully a little more for you. as we look at monday morning, the activity is going to be south of us. this is where we have the flash flood warning shuai the debris flow from the colorado burn scar

of covid-19 test to students and staff returning from spring break. it is part of governor newsom's murder plan, which includes keeping a stockpile of tests. more than 14 million test have been sent out to homes to 7 million students and faculty members. the state sent out personal protective equipment. in the east bay, women firefighters hosted a camp for girls interested in a career in the fire industry. girls in grades nine to 12 can participate, the weekend event introduces hands-on fire training designed for teens and includes hose handling and lifesaving skills. >> we give these young women a chance to build confidence using power tools including chainsaws. our goal is to make them feel empowered and confident. liz: the event is put on by a group called norcal women in the fire service. there is another camp today at the contra costa fire training center. incredible story, and a three-year-old man -- 83-year-old man set sail, hitting thousands of miles from
