fentanyl poisoning. a statement released by the mountain view los altos union high school district reads in part, with profound sadness we share the unexpected loss of a member of our los altos high school student body. we know that any loss, particularly that of a young person, is tragic. our sincere condolences go out to the student's family, friends and school community. the mountain view police department has launched an investigation into the incident. a spokesperson for the department spoke to abc7 news by phone. >> we're feeling it. and we are, you know, we have told the family that we are going to be there for them and that this is something that we feel deeply, too. >> but this case is not an isolated incident. santa clara officials have raised alarm bells for months over the growing fentanyl crisis. it's gotten so bad they've launched a working group focused on reducing local fentanyl deaths. >> it's infiltrating our schools, colleges, homeless encampments, our parks and our

community at large. tim: the group's first news conference was held on friday. there they highlighted the growing number of fentanyl deaths in the county, a number that stood at 29 in 2019. and that hit 135 in 2021. >> unfortunately, youth are disproportionately affected and we see that almost half of the fatalities are actually like the younger age groups. tim: while the investigation into santa clara's newest possible case continues, the mountain view police department is reaching out to parents for help, too. asking them to talk to their children to try and avoid another datedly -- deadly statistic. >> about the dangers of using any drugs and the consequences that could come from that, especially not just how they impact the student but also their families. tim: in santa clara county, tim johns, abc7 news. ama: a crowd gathered in san jose city hall tonight to rally for the man who was shot by an officer last weekend. keyon green was -- kaun green

was just wrestled -- had just, excuse me, green had just wrestled a firearm from a gunman inside the la victoria taqueria. commands were given to drop the gun but he didn't. the group is calling on police to release the officer's bodycam video. green was hospitalized and is expected to recover from his injuries. dan: for the first time, russia says ukraine attacked a fuel depot inside russian territory. video shows a fire at a facility just 20 miles from the border. ukraine has not confirmed or denying its involvement. meantime, ukrainian forces claim to have pushed russian forces out of towns and villages across the country. and despite constant shelling some russian troops have moved back from kyiv and a nearby airport. in the besieged city of mariupol, some residents were able to escape but many remain, trapped with little food, water, or electricity. meantime, in the bay area retch gee resettlement agencies are bracing for the arrival of ukrainians. the number set to land here is

unclear at this point. but as amps news reporter tar tar explains there's no -- tara campbell reports there's no doubt they can use all the support that they can get. reporter: millions of ukrainians fleeing their country. four million since the start of the war. and the united states is poised to welcome 100,000 refugees. >> we are on the edge of our seats just like everyone else. knowing that an -- and anticipating that we could see large numbers of folks coming. reporter: robin men cher heads up jewish family and community services in the piston bay. the resettlement agency is readying itself and counting on the community to step up again. >> the thought kicked into gear at this past august with the afghan evacuation. reporter: so far the agency's helped resettle more than 500 afghans with 200 more set to arrive in the coming months and the bay area community has been helping with financial donations and more. >> from diapers to chrome books to dishes and everything in

between to providing necessary services whether that's transportation or language translation. reporter: that's the kind of help she says they'll need again. and if you would like to get your name in now, you can go online to sign up to volunteer or make a donation. and one of the biggest challenges in the bay area is finding affordable housing for newcomers. but there is a way you may be able to help out. nova ukraine is teaming up with airbnb to provide temporary housing. julia zimmerman is a volunteer with the palo alto based nonprofit. >> so many ordinary people, nova ukraine, offering their home. reporter: and you don't have to be an airbnb host to sign up. you can simply go to airbnb.org, the company's charitable website and sign up to open up your home. >> we've actually seen that over 6,000 people here in the u.s. have signed up in the past few weeks to share their home. reporter: airbnb.org will be providing vouchers in the coming

weeks to nova ukraine, part of its commitment to help resettle 100,000 ukrainians worldwide. >> we are -- these non-profits you can book regular supply on the airbnb platform as well. whatever best meets their needs. >> and fuld like to donate to the voucher program, you can do that as well by going to airbnb.org. tara campbell, abc7 news. dan: remember, if you would like to help people in ukraine, we've put together a list of verified groups and non-profits. sending donations and supplies to refugees. go to abc7news.com/takeaction. ama: california's drought is getting worse. according to the latest snow survey. officials record the statewide snow pack at 38% of average with the snow depth of 2 1/2 inches and one inch of snow water. that's only 4% of what we normally see in april. these past three months have been the driest on record in over 100 years. >> that is typically when our snow pack is at its peak. it -- in terms of snow water content.

unfortunately, the northern sierra nevada experienced its peak snow pack in mid january. ama: the snow pack sets the stage for the year's water supply. earlier this week governor newsom ordered water agencies to implement more conservation measures. so let's get now to abc7 news meteorologist mike nicco. anything in the forecast? mike: some sprinkles. that's about it. and then record heat. next week. because the air is becoming and the ground so dry. let me throw some sobering statistics at you. good evening. here's a look at our three-year sierra snow pack drought. and guess which year is the thinnest? this year. so as we continue the -- to mount that drought it continues to get worse and worse. and it's really showing up in our reservoirs. look at this. this is the average capacity, these should be climbing, these numbers, and instead they're falling as the snow pack actually shrank in march instead of growing because of the lack of snow and also because of the melting due to the extremely

warm temperatures. now, as compared to the percent of total capacity, capacity being 100%, of average for this time of the year, you can see we are well below where we should be. and these numbers will continue to go down all summer and through next fall. and that means a pretty tough fire season and a lot of us trying to figure out how to use less water. dan? dan: boy, that is the bottom line, isn't it, mike? thanks so much. new at 11:00 the largest food truck event in san francisco has returned after a two-year hiatus. off the grid celebrated its season opener at fort mason tonight. and as abc7 news reporter ryan ryan explains, everyone was delighted to see it come back. ryan: the cool breezy air, the long lines, and the guilt-free look of stuffing your face. >> it's the best thing in the world. ryan: the popular themes of off the agreed are back. a larger-than-expected crowd came to fort mason for the event's return after it was canceled two years ago during the pandemic. >> getting out here feels good. because there's a lot of people. yeah. it feels good to like see people

andfully -- you know, people drinking and having a good time. ryan: ian clark came from the east bay with his friends to enjoy this evening. and he wasn't the only non-san franciscan wanting to take part in the festivities. >> you see all these people out here, especially in such a beautiful environment like this. and it's also just terrific for all these -- all these food trucks that are trying to make a living. ryan: it is a sign that residents in the bay area are happy to embrace large crowds and-and-fun events once again -- and fun events once again. >> it's the best feeling. we have a turnout we only could have hoped out for. ryan: the marketing director said this is a perfect way to transition from a long period of isolation and its popularity was un-- on full display. over 20 food trucks at fort mason for the start of the first night of a long season that goes until november. they actually even have a rigorous application process just for even one food truck to get a spot at this event. >> and the past two years we're a rollercoaster of can we have an event? can we not have an event?

ama: six years ago today a san francisco woman and her 2 1/2-year-old daughter were last seen by relatives. the body of nicole fitts was discovered at mclaren park, her daughter ariana is still missing. police have now increased the reward in the case. reporter: a vigil for nicole fitts and her daughter ariana. relatives believe the 32-year-old's mother came to

mclaren park on april 1, 2016, to meet a person known to her. police say most likely her child's babysitter. it's here where her body was discovered a week later in a shallow grave. her sister con tessa fitts remembers what she was made of. >> the biggest thing i remember about my sister is -- is how much love she had. how much she -- how much love she had for -- pretty much anyone she met. reporter: san francisco police announced the department was increasing the reward money to $250,000 for anyone with information on nicole's murder and the whereabouts of ariana. police and the f.b.i. say progress has been made in the investigation. but no one has been arrested. >> as we continue to collect information, and analyze forensic evidence, and develop new leads, we together with the f.b.i. will be reaching out to people again in the coming weeks and months. reporter: according to the investigation, because nicole, a single mom, worked long hours, ariana was in the care of a

babysitter and her husband when she disappeared. they and another woman believed to be involved have not fully cooperated with police. ariana was 2 1/2 at the time. she's now 8. this is what she may look like thanks to an age progression photo. >> you will actually see success stories where age progression photos have led to the recovery. sometimes by that missing child themselves. reporter: law enforcement has never determined whether or not ariana is alive. today, police said we have to believe that she is. that's why that age progression photo is so crucial. billboards with that photo will now go up in california and nevada. the people who baby sat ariana have moved to las vegas. so putting that billboard up in nevada was done strategically. >> that's just the biggest thing that we can do for ariana, for our family, and for nicky is to find ariana and bring her home as soon as possible. reporter: in san francisco,

leanne melendez, abc7 news. ama: let's move on. will smith has resigned from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. less than a week after slapping chris rock at the oscars. in a statement, the actor said in part, i will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. my actions at the 94th academy awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. smith was facing possible expulsion or suspension for hitting rock. before he resigned. by resigning he will no longer be able to vote on oscar nominations. academy president david reuben said the academy will continue to move forward with disciplinary proceedings against smith. and the actor's -- actors union may do the same. ama: today san francisco city and transit leaders celebrated the grand opening of the van ness avenue rapid transit system. a ribbon cutting had this morning on the rad transit only lanes in the middle of the busy thoroughfare. pedestrian cross walks have been upgraded and there's new

undergroundwater infrastructure. bus rapid transit is expected to reduce travel time by 30%. dan: a new state plan could double the refund for recycled cans and bottles of the it's part of an effort to have more residents do their part to recycle. if the proposal is approved, by the legislature, residents could temporarily receive ten cents for a 12 ounce beverage container instead of five cents. big difference. the new proposal will expand mobile recycling centers throughout the state. the state currently has $600 million in unclaimed can and bottle deposits. $600 million. unclaimed. ama: wow. incredible. dan: a lot of bottles and cans. ama: our hot weather is going to be incredible. dan: yeah. mike with the weekend forecast. mike: speaking of bottled water you'll need plenty of it next week for sure. let's go through the weekend first by starting out where we ended up today. check out these temperatures. pretty close to average in san francisco and oakland. but well above average in our inland neighborhoods with some

mid to upper 70's in san jose, east bay, and up into the north bay and still that breeze kept us at 57 at half moon bay. here's a look at sutra towers haze out there but we expect any of the low clouds that are forming along the peninsula coast pretty much stay there the rest of the night. high clouds and sunshine all weekend with breezier conditions and cooler weather sunday. a chance of sprinkles in the north bay monday. that's our only chance of wet weather. and then we have a rebound of robust temperatures that will near us into record levels. in fact, we will have a low risk of heat illness for about three days. tonight, we're dropping down mainly into the mid and upper 40's with increasing high clouds. here's a beautiful shot from the exploratorium showing that it's still pretty clear out there. and the new moon is still around. so you should be able to see a lot of stars over the next couple of hours. but then the high clouds roll in. a little bit of fog at the coast. we'll start off in those mid to upper 40's at 7:00. staying at the 50's at the coast while we hit the mid up toker 60's for our bay and inland neighborhoods. that's pretty close to average and that's the noon temperature. look at this. by the time we get to the

afternoon we're even -- a little bit warmer than today with low to upper 70's back into the mid and upper 60's as we head toward that sunset at about 7:32. highs tomorrow, 61 at half moon bay and a little breezy. 67 at san francisco. and then low to mid 70's for the rest of the bay. mid 70's in the south bay. how about those upper 70's to near 80 in our inland east bay neighborhoods and mid up toker 70's in our north bay neighborhoods. jump ahead to monday, a cold front skirting us to the north. draw your attention to the top of your screen. and those are some sprinkles that will hit lake and medicineo and possibly the northern part of sonoma counties. look at this. .01 as far south as closer dale. it will bring in cooler air. our coolest day will be monday and then watch this area of high pressure split into two. and then watch that. move over to the great basin and another one off the coast. that brings us an offshore breeze. and look at these temperatures. 60's, 70's and 80's wednesday. we got 70's, 80's and 90's for thursday. our hottest day and that is a day where we will be pretty

close to some record high temperatures. the only one maybe for sure is livermore at 89 degrees. my accuweather seven day forecast four to six degrees cooler with a solid breeze coming in for all of our neighborhoods sunday. monday is the coolest with that passing cold front and more cloud cover. and then the race is on to those near record high temperatures wednesday, thursday, and friday. ama: mike, thank you. mike: you bet. dan: we are very sad to report to you tonight that a long-time member of our abc7 family has passed away. joel bartlett died last night at his home in santa rosa surrounded by family and the animals he loved so much. he joined the air force in the 1960's where he became a meteorologist. he went on to become a familiar face certainly in the bay area bringing us the weather for 31 years. 17 of those years were at k.g.o. wednesday was declared joel bartlett day in san francisco. we'll be right

sort of shows the resilience of the people that we work with here and also the creativity. no one here afraid to t sothg r the first tiot som. >> "teranga" literally means hospitality, friendship, camaraderie... which is a wolof word, the senegalese national language. we serve organic west african cuisine. most of our cuisine is very influenced with a lot of the dishes i was eating growing up as a young girl in most of the west africa. and we alsattet u a little bit of some other spices and other dishes from the whole continent of africa, whether it's north, east, or south. coming into this country as an immigrant, i didn't know anything about the laws. i didn't know what were the different documentations i needed to start a business. but being part of la cocina, they tell you all the different steps, things that, as an immigrant, if you're not part of this country you won't necessarily know.
