>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> this morning the fentanyl crisis continues to grow i south bay high school is dead after authorities say could be from possible fentanyl poisoning. police are investigating as county officials fight the crisis. in morning, saturday, april 2. we are going to get to that story in a moment, but first let us start with a quick look at the rather with lisa argen. lisa: good morning to you. the first weekend of april is here, and i do not know if you've noticed but temperatures are warmer. a few clouds around the north bay and fog in santa rosa. 53 concord. 45 in dublin and livermore at

43. 50 downtown and 45 on the coast and that allows temperatures to hover anywhere from two to six degrees warmer than yesterday. there is a look outside where we will have clouds around, calling it partly cloudy with high clouds visiting us above average. noontime upper 60's and mid 70's inland. it 50's cool at the coast with the sea breeze. i the afternoon we have mild temperatures -- by the afternoon we have mild temperatures with cooling coming before we switch things up into next week. liz: in the south bay, an investigation is underway into the death of a high school student who died possibly due to fentanyl poisoning. tim johns talks to authorities leading the investigation. tim: a tragedy unfolding in the los altos high school community. an unidentified teenager, a

student pronounced dead at their home. the suspected killer, a possible fentanyl poisoning. a statement released by the union high school district reads in part "with profound sadness we share the unexpected loss of the member -- of a member of the los altos high school student body. we know any loss particularly that of a young person is tragic. our sincere condolences to their family, friends, and school immunity -- community." a spokesperson spoke to abc 7 five -- by phone. >> we are feeling it and we told the family that we would be there for them and this is something that we feel deeply. tim: this case is not an isolated insolence. -- incident. alarm bells have been wrong for months. it has gotten so bad that they launched a working group focused on reducing local deaths. >> it is infiltrating schools,

colleges, homeless encampments, parks and communities at large. tim:s the group's held a news conference on friday and they highlighted a growing number of deaths, a number that started 29 and 2019 and hit 135 in 2021. >> unfortunately youth is disproportionately affected and we almost see half of the fatalities are in the younger age groups. tim: while the investigation into the newest possible case continues the mt. view police department is reaching out to parents for help. asking them to help to talk to their children to avoid another deadly statistic. >> about the dangers of using any drugs, and the consequences that can come from that, not just how they impact the student but also their families. liz: a crowd gathered at san jose city hall to rally for the man shot by an officer last

weekend. keon greene had just wrestled a gut -- a firearm from a gunman. as he walked out the goat -- walked out the door holding the gun police say that commands were given clearly to drop the gun. the group is calling on police to release the bodycam video. green was hospitalized and is expected to recover from his injuries. now to the war in ukraine. for the first time russia says that ukraine attacked a fuel depot inside russian territory. video shows a fire out -- in a facility 20 miles outside of the border. ukraine is not confirming or denying their involvement. ukrainian forces claim to have pushed russian forces out of towns and villages. despite the constant shelling, some troops have moved back from kyiv. in mariupol some were able to escape but many remained trapped. in the bay area, refugee

resettlement agencies are bracing for the arrival of ukrainians. the number set to land is still unclear but as tara campbell tells us there is no doubt that they can use all of the support that they can get. tara: millions of ukrainians fleeing their country, 4 million since the start of the war and the united states is poised to welcome 100,000. >> we are on the edge of our seats just like everyone else knowing and anticipating that we could see large numbers of folks coming. tim: robin -- tara: robin heads up jewish family and community services. the resettlement agency is readying itself and counting on the community to step up again. >> this will really kick into gear this past august with the afghan evacuation. tara: the agency has helped settle 500 afghans with 200 more set to arrive in the coming months. in the bay area community has been helping with financial donations and more. >> from diapers to chromebook's

of snow water content. unfortunately the northern sierra nevada experienced its peak snowpack in mid-january. liz: it sets the stage for the year's water supply. governor newsom ordered water agencies to implement more conservation measures. the lack of snow mean ski resorts are closing. this weekend will be the last for diamond pink, northstar, homewood, and boreal, who all announced that they will be close and that's closing on april 16. kirkwood and palisades close on may 1 and the resorts will pair up -- will prepare for summer activities. we are expecting a heat wave. lisa: we are, but not until the end of next week. right now it is nice out. temperatures are a little bit milder than yesterday at this hour, so we are sitting at about 50 downtown with a little bit of cloud cover headed our way. today is a warmer day of the weekend.

♪ i wanna go across the trees ♪ ♪ just take my hand ♪ ♪ we will have fun till the sun goes down ♪ ♪ and we'll start over again ♪ ♪ liz: a los angeles judge ruled that the corporate diversity law violates the state competition -- constitution. governor newsom signed into law. it mandated that corporate boards have a member of an underrepresented community from certain racial, ethnic, or lgbtq groups. the ruling did not explain the judge's reasoning for the lawsuit but the conservative legal group judicial watch argued that it violated the constitutional equal protection clause. san francisco's laguna hospital

is at risk of facing possible closure. according to the examiner, state and federal regulators are threatening to withdraw dedicated and medical funding after the hospital reported two fatal overdoses. laguna hospital has until november 15 two fix a lot of the issues. six years ago a san francisco woman and her 2.5-year-old daughter weather lasting by relatives and a week later the body of nicole fits was discovered. her daughter, arrieta, is still missing. leah -- leah melendez said that police have increased their reward. leah: a vigil for nicole and arrieta. they believe that she came to the park to meet a person known to her, police say most likely her child's babysitter. it was here where her body was

discovered a week later in a shallow grave. her sister remembers what she was made of. >> the biggest thing i remember about my sister is how much love she had and how much love she had for pretty much anyone that she met. leah: police announced that the department was increasing the reward money for anyone with information on nicole's murder and the whereabouts of ariana. progress has been made in the investigation but no one has been arrested. >> as we continue to collect information and analyze evidence and develop new leads, we together with the fbi -- the fbi will be reaching out in the coming weeks and months. leah: because she worked long hours, ariana was in the care of a babysitter and her husband. they and another woman believed to be involved have not fully cooperated with police. ariana was 2.5 at the time and

she has -- she is now eight. this is what she might look like. >> you will actually see success stories where age progression photos have led to recoveries, sometimes by the missing child themselves. leah: law enforcement never determined whether ariana is alive. police say that they have to believe that she is. that is why that age progression photo is so crucial. billboards with the photo will go up in california and nevada. the people who babysat ariana moved to las vegas so putting the bill bogaard up and nevada was done strategically. >> that is the biggest thing we can do for ariana and our family, which is defined ariana. leah: in san francisco, abc 7 news. liz: san francisco city and transit leaders celebrated the opening of the van ness avenue rapid transit system.

it was held in the transit only lanes. pedestrian crosswalks have been upgraded and there is new underground water infrastructure. bus rapid transit is expected to reduce travel time by 30%. a new plan could double the refund for recycle cans and bottles as part of an effort to have more residents recycle. if the legislature approves the plan residents could receive $.10 for a 12 ounce beverage container instead of five cents. itill expand mobile recycling centers through the state. the state is currently $600 million in unclaimed can and bottle deposits. this weekend cancellations and delays could be possible on some alaska airlines flights because of a pilot protest. the group was at the sfo terminal holding signs demanding a new contract. the pilots are not on strike, they have been in contract negotiations for three years.

among the demands are better play and -- better pay and more flexible schedules. >> we are seeing a company with a strong recovery making strong profits at this point of time -- point in time and we are saying three years is too long. liz: according to flightaware, seven -- seven flights were canceled and no word if any are impacted today. after a two year hiatus the larger -- the largest food trunk event is back. off the grid celebrated its season opener. ryan curry shows us all of the people eager to see the event come back. ryan: the cool air, long lines and grill skilled free of stuffing your face. the popular themes of off the grid are back. a larger than expected crowd came for the return after the event was canceled two years ago. >> it feels good because there is a lot of people. it is good to see people and

people are having a good time. leah: ian clark -- ryan: ian clark came from the east bay and he was not the only nonprint fashion on san franciscan taking part. >> we see all of these people in such a beautiful environment like this and it is terrific for all of these food trucks that are trying to make a living. ryan: is a sign that residents are happy to embrace large crowds and fun events again. >> it is the best feeling, we have a turnout that we only could have hoped for. ryan: the marketing director says this event is the perfect way to transition from a long period of isolation and its popularity was on full display. over 20 food trucks are out there for the start of a long season that goes until november. they have a rigorous application process for even one food truck to get a spot. >> in the past two years was a roller coaster of can we have an event, can we not have an event. that was tough emotionally, but

the real work and putting this altogether happened at the start of the year when we said i think everyone is ready. ryan: with a night like friday it is easy to understand why so many food trucks want to serve. it shows to be a great way to bring the community together. >> you cannot beat it because this is what san francisco is about. liz: lisa, the weather was really nice for yesterday as well. >> warming up and looking at a nice day. we will have a visit from high clouds not only today but into the second half of the weekend. that is when the wind will shift and temperatures will cool. there is a weak system that wants to flirt with sonoma county into sunday and monday. that will keep temperatures from getting too warm. beyond that, things are totally different. here is live doppler 7 with clouds offshore and temperatures

are in brentwood. temperatures are 43 and looking at fog towards novato. 50 in san francisco and 44 in pacifica. as we look at the fog it has been an issue for santa rosa later on this morning. otherwise it will lift and we will look for sunshine out there mixed with high clouds. here is a look with the hour-by-hour forecast. notice a veil of high clouds in the north bay, otherwise we have sunshine and then stopping us again at 4:30. we can see high clouds continue into the evening hours overnight. 8:00 sunday morning and waking up with some sun. this time we have a wind shift with the wind getting breezy and temperatures cool and blustery along the shoreline. 2:00 tomorrow again, partly cloudy conditions and the wind kicking up offshore out of the southwest and taking us through monday. that is when the system drops off to the north of us and as we look outside the visibility is

not a problem. partly cloudy and cooler and breezy and we will be heating up into next week. here is a look with sunday temperatures back in the 50's where we will stay. look at oakland, kind of a big drop today from the 70's to the 60's, and as we look at santa rosa, the outlined area staying in the 70's. monday should be our coolest day with widespread 50's on the shoreline just about 60 in oakland and fremont, and the numbers really cooling off in the north bay. tuesday we do a reversal and we warm up where of numbers climb through the 60's bayshore and into the 70's as we get towards the afternoon in the end. look at what happens towards the wednesday, thursday, friday time frame. this is sam jose -- san jose and these dip in the next few days. 80's and 90's towards the middle of the week and friday looks to be warm anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees above average.

72 in oakland and richmond and san mateo. we see high clouds mid 70's in san jose and look at 81 by the delta. the accuweather 7 day forecast with us in the mid to upper 70's bayside and inland and we cool it off tomorrow with numbers as much as five to eight degrees cooler. monday a few sprinkles, clear in cloverdale and then we warm up on tuesday. wednesday and thursday 80's to near 90 with 70's beach weather midweek. so, maybe somebody is sick mean we -- midweek, right? liz: beach weather in the beginning of april. thank you. we are sad to report that a longtime member of our family has passed away. joe bartlett died thursday night in santa rosa surrounded by family and the animals that he loved. he joined the air force in the 60's where he became a meteorologist and went on to

liz: we are going to turn to build a better bay area and renters can breathe a sigh of relief as california extended the eviction protection program. we followed up with a mom of six who says it is a small relief. luz: we met camilla protesting to extend the rent relief program and followed up 21 hours after it passed, protecting tenants from eviction for the next 90 days. >> it is another stopwatch to how long are we going to be stable is what it is. luz: as we walked inside her

home she showed us our biggest accomplishment. >> i had a child while getting my degree and working. luz: her dining room turned into a childcare business it is also where her six kids homeschool and ultimately their home. they are two months behind in rent and they are one of over 350,000 californians who applied for the housing is key program and are still waiting for the state to pay their lanor. does it hurt you that your 15-year-old is thinking about ways to help contribute? >> it hurts. it crushes. yes, to know that he feels like that. yes. luz: their entire family was once homeless six years ago. she is trying to get more kids to join her childcare and her husband is working two jobs. and your fear is that everything you are teaching your kids -- >> means nothing if we cannot keep a roof. luz: landlords are also struggling, the state's

for joining us. we will start this half-hour with another look at the weather. hello, happy april. lisa: thank you, same to you. first weekend of april we have zero visibility with a lot of fog. two to four degrees warmer as temperatures have come up a little bit. 53concord. hey williard -- hayward at 49. 9:00 is mild in the upper 50's with sunny skies and high clouds moving in throughout the afternoon. 1:00 and already in the low 70's from the valley to concord to santa rosa and then through the 3:00 and 4:00 hour high clouds in hayward, cool in the upper 50's and half moon bay but upper 70's in santa rosa and livermore and then by 9:00, we are cloudy and we look for a similar cloud cover into sunday. liz: thank you.

the red cross is increasing its efforts to people -- to help people trying to escape ukraine as president zelenskyy warns that retreating russian forces are creating a disaster outside of the capital as they leave mines. karina mitchell has the details. karina: the red cross as it is trying again to help people escape from the city of marip upol, they were not able to reach the city on friday that as soldiers attract -- attacked the city with grenade launchers. ukrainian forces are making progress, but much of their latest city captured is destroyed. many say the ordeal was terrifying. this woman says that it was very scary, and i was very frightened when the russians came to check things out, i thought that they would execute us. some russian troops have moved back from the capital. these areas show the closest that the military got to kyiv

comparative friday. volodymyr zelenskyy has acknowledged that the situation in the donbas region and the south remains difficult. the white house has this war is not going the way that vladimir putin planned. >> his intention of winning a quick war and defeating that ukrainians quickly is not how it has played out. we have seen troops be demoralized and we have seen troops run out of equipments that they need on the russian side. karina: russia is admitting to an attack by ukraine for the first time. they say they carried out an airstrike on -- airstrike on fuel depots 20 miles from the border. ukraine is not confirming or denying its involvement. virtual peace talks between both sides continue and the chief negotiator says that negotiating positions champ -- changed by the day depending on battlefield gains or losses which makes the negotiating "extremely difficult." liz: will smith has resigned

from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences -- sciences less than a week after slapping chris rock. the actor said in part "i will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. my actions at the 94th academy awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable." he was facing possible expulsion or suspension for hitting rock before he resigned. by resigning he will no longer being able to be able to vote on oscar nominations. the academy president says that it will continue to move forward with disciplinary proceedings. the actor's union might do the same. for the first time we are hearing from the lead producer of the oscars about what happened during sunday's show talking only to abc about the behind-the-scenes chaos. morgan norwood has that story. morgan: oscars 2022 producer is out -- is opening up about what happened behind the scenes on hollywood's biggest night after

will smith slapped chris rock on stage. he sat down for an exclusive interview with t.j. holmes. >> i have never felt so immediately devastated like i did in that room. morgan: he watched from behind the think -- behind-the-scenes and thought it was a bit but then he confirmed he had been slapped. the lapd was ready to take will smith into custody. >> they were saying this is battery, we will get him, we are prepared to get him right now and you can press charges and you can arrest him. as they were talking chris was being very dismissive of those options. morgan: the academy says that they asked will smith to leave and he refused. he accepted the award for best actor in his performance with " king richard" and a speech that he hoped would include an apology to chris rock. >> we were hoping that he would make it better, that he would stand on that stage and say what just happened minutes ago.

in the north bay, face masks are required again at one elementary school following a spike in covid-19 cases. two dozen students and staff have tested positive. cornell barnard shows us how the school is responding. >> we have these so that every kid and students and every staff member gets one of these. cornell: mike taylor shows as the covid rapid test being passed out at coleman, entry school. after a spike in new cases. >> i am not very surprised. i surprised that it all happened at once. it was very challenging to see kids not feeling well and teachers not feeling well. cornell: in the past week 15 students and staff members have tested positive those infected are staying home until healthy and can provide a negative test. >> definitely did not want to close the school, not going back to zoom. l: taylor spoke to us

outside the school but inside masks are required and it comes less than a month after marin county said that it was safe to unmask. up and says that her son in first grade is staying healthy. >> he has not had covid and we have managed to stay covid free so far, but at some point we expect that we will probably get it. cornell: anne email from the principal was sent to parents saying in part "i want to emphasize that this is not a time for alarm but for us to implemented data input meant the recommended public health strategies to respond to an uptick in cases." covid rates remain low and other schools of far cry from january were 90 students were out sick in one school district alone. spring break is next week but when students return they will have to wear their mask through april 15 as a precaution. the school is reviewing protocol

liz: today is a day of climate action and volunteers will be out to restore, cleanup and beautify china camp state park. pg&e and the state parks foundation are teaming up for the cleanup event. this is one of seven plan volunteer events in partnership with the foundation and they will work to clear areas to let staff reach at -- retread the peacock cap trail. this is the first weekend of the spring series of san francisco restaurant week. 160 are participating offering fixed menus for a set price. restaurant struggled to survive during the pandemic and hopefully this event will convince people to dine out if they have not already. >> we want to be hopeful. we saw that san francisco is promoting the coming back to work and what is cool is that many restaurants have opted in for affordable lunches. we have a $10 and $15 and $25
