saturday morning. we begin with the breaking news, the fallout over will smith, the slapping of chris rock on stage during last week's oscars. >> yes, smith overnight submitting a letter resigning his membership in the academy of motion picture arts and sciences as the academy considers additional disciplinary action. >> and smith also offered up another apology for his actions that shocked the audience and millions of viewers around the world. abc's zohreen shah is at the dolby theatre in hollywood where that incident unfolded with the latest this morning. zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, gio. around the world will smith is seen as one of the biggest actors of our generation and he is now resigning from the academy and he says he is ready to face more consequences, all of this nearly one week after assaulting chris rock at the oscars and then lashing out at him for an unscripted joke directed at his wife. in a statement released overnight, smith stating in part, i've betrayed the trust of

the academy, deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. i am heartbroken. i am resigning from membership in the academy. now, smith can still be nominated for future work but he cannot vote for the oscars again. the academy saying overnight they received and accepted smith's immediate resignation and they will move forward with disciplinary proceedings. their next meeting to discuss smith is april 18th. they have many options. they could ban smith from ever being nominated again. they could also ban him from walking up those stairs to the oscars again as well. eva. >> zohreen shah for us in los angeles. thank you, zohreen. now to the war in ukraine. ukrainian forces regaining control of multiple towns and new videos posted online show air strikes in russian territory. officials in moscow saying the attacks were carried out by ukraine. abc's terry moran is on the ground in lviv with the latest. good morning, again, terry.

>> reporter: good morning, eva. ukrainians this morning are celebrating the withdrawal of russian forces from some of those towns around kyiv, but ukrainian officials say those russian units are redeploying to the east of this country where a major battle is shaping up in the coming weeks. this morning, the fallout from that daring surprise attack on a fuel depot inside russia. online videos show missiles fired apparently from two helicopters slamming into fuel tanks. into the russia city of belgorod, 20 miles from the border. the kremlin accused ukraine, the first time russia has admitted to an attack inside russia by ukraine since the invasion began. ukraine's defense ministry would not confirm or deny their involvement. in the city of mariupol, that besieged and strategically critical port, russia's relentless assault has blocked aid agencies like the red cross from bringing lifesaving relief to roughly 100,000 people there trapped and desperate and

evacuations are stalled. this morning, "the new york times" reports that the biden administration will work with u.s. allies to send soviet-era tanks to bolster ukrainian forces in the eastern donbas region of the country. russians have withdrawn in several locations but human rights watch says the russians are deploying banned anti-personnel mines to cover their retreat. we visited the secret warehouse in lviv in western ukraine where volunteers sort, pack and ship out essential goods to the front lines. everything you see in this vast warehouse has been donated by private citizens around the world. there's medical equipment, humanitarian supplies, ammunition, military equipment and this first aid kit from chicago. in the car the mayor of lviv tells me something you hear a lot in ukraine. >> i believe in our victory. we must. we must for freedom. we must for all democratic countries.

>> reporter: that's what you hear throughout this country, ukrainians feel that they are fighting for something greater even than the freedom of their country. meanwhile, pope francis has said that he is considering a trip to ukraine, to kyiv, an extraordinary call for peace in person. the pope has traveled to a war zone before in africa and he says a trip to ukraine is, quote, on the table. eva. >> terry moran for us there in ukraine. and abc news will be tracking the very latest developments out of ukraine all weekend. tune in to "this week." white house chief of staff ron mcclain will join george for an exclusive one-on-one sunday. whit. eva, turning to your family budget. the usda releasing a stunning new report about the increase in food prices. deirdre bolton is back with us this morning. so, deirdre, what did this report actually find? >> reporter: this report shows what we already know. we are spending more at the grocery store so the cost of products from grocery stores

and supermarkets, rising 1.4% between january and february this year. from a larger lens, 8.6%, if you compare february 2021 to the previous year. as for the cost of food in restaurants prices up 0.4% in february of this year but 6.8% higher than the year before. for this year, what's ahead? the usda forecasting that grocery prices will climb again between 3% and 4%. restaurant food may increase between 5.5% and 6.5%. the biggest culprit, protein, poultry prices could move up by 6% to 7% this year. the cost of eggs, a little less, 2.5% to 3.5%. the best value for your dollar, fresh vegetables, prices did not change that much. at least this past february. they are forecast to rise only 1.5% to 2% this year so moms everywhere, there we go. beating the drum, eat your veggies, not only good for you good for your wallet as well. >> save money by eating green things. >> that's right. >> moms are always right.

opening up to his fans getting candid about his mental health on social media writing, it's hard some days to stay positive. the comments coming just days after a disappointing tenth place finish at the saudi arabia grand prix. hamilton writing, i have struggled mentally and emotionally for a long time, to keep going is a constant effort but we have to keep fighting. i'm writing to tell you it's okay to feel the way you do, just know that you are not alone and that we are going to get through this. >> when you have somebody come out like lewis hamilton, when he comes out and says, i'm not okay, it's not great. it's relatable and it's that reminder that we don't always have to be perfect. >> reporter: hamilton is the sport's most successful driver with more than 100 race wins and seven championship titles, but a controversial finish last season cost the 37-year-old what would have been a record-breaking eighth championship.

"gma weekend" will give you an inside look at the very first miami grand prix this may. i want that assignment. >> yeah. >> just saying that for the bosses out there. >> raise your hand. look forward to that, eva. thank you. we do want to turn now to road rage reality checks. psychologist dr. taylor williams joins us now to explain the recent rise in incidents and how to keep cool behind the wheel. dr. williams, good morning to you. this is interesting here because the pandemic has put us all in some strange positions. we've all been stuck at home and it's impacting the way we drive. how is that? >> good morning, nice to be here. you know, we've been sequestered for about two years and there are different scenarios for why people are just having so much road rage.

you know, we jut came out of a two-year pandemic and people have so much stress on their minds, you know, we thought we had a little lull and then we engaged in this war and now at the pumps we're seeing prices up, so, you know, when you go to the pumps, you're a little bit upset and your aggression is coming out on the road. >> so what about the social dynamic, the fact that we're inside a car? what is it about being in a car, being in a traffic jam that prompts people to act out? >> when you're stuck in a traffic jam, it's one of the worst feelings in the world. first of all, if you're claustrophobic you're used to moving and you're not moving. you have no idea when this traffic jam is going to open up. it raises your anxiety level, your frustration level and you just feel like you're enclosed again and you have no control over your situation. >> so we talked about some of

the reasons behind this. but what can we do to keep calm behind the wheel? >> first of all, we need to get enough rest because we're driving on empty at times. second, you know, we are only seeing objects. these cars are objects, but if you stop and think that there's another person inside that car that might be going through something, that might be as frustrated as you are right now and have some empathy that there's a real person sitting there in that car and it's not just a challenge to another object that has no feeling and no reaction that there is a real person there. >> that's such a great point because we would behave differently if we were next to that person like in a line at the grocery store instead of driving on a freeway. dr. williams, thank you so much for your time this morning. we appreciate it. >> so happy to be here. thank you. >> all right. >> yeah, and it's important to remember this because even though there were less people on the road during the pandemic, they actually had accidents go up, so it's important to remember. >> oh, wow. >> some people aren't taking public transportation so in

first, though, it's a busy saturday morning so here is a look at the headlines we're following right now. first, a new victory for advocates of decriminalizing marijuana. the house of representatives passing a bill that would legalize it federally and clear cannabis convictions. most democrats and three republicans voting yes. representative jerry nadler telling abc news in a statement that the bill is about ending and reversing decades of failed federal policy that has taken a heavy toll on too many people across this country, but it does face some hurdles when it gets to the senate. and a new turn in the tragic murder of naomi irion. authorities booking troy driver on charges of open murder with use of a deadly weapon, robbery, burglary and destruction of evidence after he was previously charged with kidnapping. the 18-year-old went missing on march 12th in nevada. this week, according to investigators, an autopsy confirmed that human remains were naomi's. and today is the 15th annual world autism awareness day. the united nations designated this day to highlight the need to help improve the quality of

♪ >> welcome back to "gma" as we spring into organizing and when it comes to giving overstuffed entryways and messy mudrooms a springtime spruc i degtstaple lauren c tough lauren, good morning. it's great to have you. >> thank you so much for having me, and good morning, america. >> yes, good morning. all right, so we're going to jump right to it and i made a bit of a mess so we can do this here. we're talking about entryways and mudrooms. what's the best way to get started? >> well, you know what, listen, we have just finished a really messy winter and now it's time to just really give it a fresh, clean spring. a spring clean. so one thing i'd like to do is just really get rid of everything in a space so if it's your entryway, take everything out. you know, just so you can see what you've got, what space you have available. >> okay, so you said take everything out. how do you go through and determine what you're going to

get out of the way? >> well, i say take everything out. there is no use is cleaning around things you won't use ot or you're not going to need. when you move everything out of your space you get to see what things you want to bring back in. you're having a purpose behind everything you bring back in and it's a great time at that point to really give things a deep clean like your baseboards and even things, these tend to get a lot of wear and tear during the winter months with the slush but when you come back in, take your rugs outside and dust them off. cleaner with a little bit of baking soda and essential oil. i throw mine in an old parmesan cheese jar and let it sit for an hour. smells amazing. great way to freshen up the entryway space. >> we cleaned, freshened. i know you touched on this but as we're deciding what to put back, that's where it gets complicated, right, because we overpack these areas with a

bunch of stuff. how do we pick the right stuff to keep around? >> absolutely. that's a great question. okay, so when you're bringing things back in, you want to bring things back in that are indicative of the season. now it's spring. we need things like our rain boots, things like umbrellas, nothing that, you know, you don't need a snowboard if it's sandal season, so bringing in the things that are necessary for that season and the things that you need during that time period is exactly the things you want to bring back in. everything else you can store away. >> i always like having my snowboard ready just in case you need to shred the gnar. okay. >> there you go. >> when we are talking about storage systems, though, what is the best way to get organized. cubbies here. usually hooks involved. what do you like to include in your storage system? >> well, you know, on the show "big block overhaul," which is airing tonight, we had a family with five children. that's seven people. that's actually 14 shoes at their door every day.

with a color-coded system that was really helpful for each family member to have. so each cubby was a color-coded system. that's great for really big families but even for smaller families like mine or yours, even just having an allotted space like a basket for everybody, they can put their backpacks, purses or a shelf would be a helpful solution for people with smaller families or smaller spaces. >> love that. dad is on top. the little kids on the bottom, right, you know get all organized and color coded. appreciate that. when we're talking about some of our spaces like our entryways how can we better utilize that space? we have your standard entryway table here. what would you do about something like this? >> yes, absolutely. you know, designing with a purpose in mind is so important. so for me i've got a little space right here. this is my own garage and what i love is bringing in a little piece of furniture that helps with me to have a drop-off point so it's a piece of furniture but it actually serves a little more
