announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> they found that multiple people, unfortunately, had been shot. this is a tragic situation. >> an early morning mass shooting in downtown sacramento leaves six people dead and at least 10 others wounded. good morning, everybody. it is sunday, april third. i am liz kreutz. liz: we will have the latest on that deadly mass shooting in a moment. but first, let's start with a quick look at the forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa: temperatures in the 40's and upper 50's in some locations, with a clear start. we have clouds to the north of us. they will be influencing parts of the north bay today. look at the sunny san jose shot, where it is 56.

57 in oakland. 50 on the coast. 54 in santa clara. low 50's in santa rosa. we have some gusty upper elevation wins. the winds will pick up along the coast, keeping it only in the lower 50's. it is in the upper 60's, bayshore. we are cooler in fremont and newark. it 70's return for some locations in lynn. we will look for the increasing high clouds, the windy coast and some changes for your monday before we heat up this week. liz: back to that breaking news, sacramento police are investigating a shooting that left at least six people dead and at least 10 others injured. this happened around 2:00 this morning as nightclubs were closing in downtown sacramento, about two blocks from the state capital, just blocks from the golden one center if you are familiar with the area. the warriors are scheduled to play there tonight. no word if there will be changes to that game. the area is blocked off right

now. other videos we have seen posted on social media are showing people running through the street as gunfire was heard in the background early this morning. the police chief of sacramento spoke to reporters about the incident. >> we had officers in the area that heard shots fired and responded to the area of 10th and k. they found a large crowd here and found they had a number of people who were shot in the area. those officers rendered aid to our victims. and called for additional assistance, as well as our medical responders at the local fire department here. so, the scene behind me is where this happened. right now, we do not have a suspect in custody on this. we are asking for the public's health. this is a tragic and unfortunate situation. >> was there an event or concert letting out? >> we had a large crowd in the

area. it wasn't associated with any particular club or even. >> what is happening right now? what are detectives and officers doing to try to solve this crime? >> business, you can imagine, is a very complex and complicated scene. we have a large group of investigators that are responding. they are just now beginning to conduct the preliminary investigation into this incident. >> is there more than one suspect? >> we don't know the information. we are asking for the public health -- help. -- public's help. we are asking for their assistance. we know that this -- there were shots fired. there are guns involved, obviously. >> if they are still at large, is it safe? >> we have a large police presence. the scene is now secure. >> do you believe the victims

were targeted? >> we don't have that information right now. but, we certainly hope to get more and be able to provide more information about this incident later in the day. liz: as the police chief mentioned, please tell have any suspects. right now, they are asking for the public's help with any information. governor newsom released this statement about the shooting. it reads in part, sadly, we mourn the lives lost. another her in this act of gun violence. jennifer and i send our heartfelt condolences to the community impacted by this terrible tragedy. another mass casualty shooting has occurred, leaving families with lost loved ones, multiple individuals injured and a community in grief. mayor darrell steinberg of sacramento shared these tweets about the shooting. it reads words cannot express my shock and chad -- sadness this morning. the numbers of people wounded is

difficult to comprehend. rising gun violence is a scorch on our city, state and nation. kathy lester has made it a top priority and i stand firmly behind her. so, again, another mass shooting, this time in downtown sacramento. at least 16 people have been shot. six have been killed. 10 have been wounded. we do not know the conditions of those 10 people right now. we are updating our website, abc 7 news.com with the latest information. moving on for now, developing news from ukraine. ukrainian officials say russian missiles hit critical infrastructure facilities in odessa. new video this morning shows clones of smoke -- plumes of smoke rising over the port city. russia's military claims the attack destroyed an oil refinery and three fuel depots which had been supplying fuel to nearby ukrainian troops. no casualties have been reported

yet. meantime, officials say russian troops are retreating from much of the north. ukrainian forces have retaken much of the area around kyiv. russian troops have abandoned a crucial airport, which is six miles outside of the capital. ukrainian president zelinski is calling on the west to send more weapons, fearing that russia is gearing up for a much more destructive battle in eastern ukraine. >> unfortunately, ukraine has not yet received enough modern antimissile systems, not received aircraft and has not received what partners could provide. >> pope francis is reportedly considering a trip to kyiv. liz: the pope placed blame for the war on vladimir putin but did not name him directionally -- directly. one woman who has dedicated her life to eradicating landmines is calling for more action. tomorrow marks international day for mine awareness. in the midst of the war in ukraine, her life's work is taking center stage.

>> ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy with a grim warning for civilian's saturday morning, calling the situation catastrophic. russian troops, he says, leaving behind deadly landmines. it is enough to send shivers down the spine of heidi kuhn. she has dedicated her life to ridding the world of landmines. children, she describes, so often are the victims. >> the horrors of the mothers, to see their children, boom, boom, boom. what are we going to do? look back and just watch? >> 25 years ago, she founded roots of peace. a nonprofit committed to clearing mines, replacing them with vineyards and orchards worldwide. in february, she was in azerbaijan, the country that borders russia to the south.

liz: at lake tahoe this independence day, the fireworks are out and the drones are in. after a two year hiatus, north lake tahoe has decided not to bring back its annual july 4 fireworks show. instead, they will put on a 15 minute drone lighting show. the ecosystem has changed and organizers are worried about the fire risks posed by big booming fireworks. instead, 100 drones will put on a light show with choreographed music. organizers say forgoing a fireworks show helps pets and wildlife who won't be startled by the big bangs. dogs get startled. i'm sure they are happy too. lisa: that is a great move, for sure. we are looking at a little bit of change for the second half of your weekend. it is sunny out there. we have a little bit of haze and patchy fog. overall, we are looking at

wednesday will be warm. hot on thursday. it could be hot in the parts -- hot in parts of the bay area on wednesday. we get into tonight and it is already very windy at the coast. thicker clouds will arrive. the mid-level clouds in association with the system pushing into oregon could bring a few sprinkles to clearlake and cloverdale. we break out into partly cloudy skies into our monday afternoon. because of the clouds and the breeze, we will keep temperatures from not warming up as much as we had yesterday. here is a look at the winds. look at how they are building along the coast. over 35 miles per hour here. notice the 30 mile-per-hour wind gusts in the afternoon in livermore. a breezy and gusty afternoon. into monday, still windy. remember the relative humidity is in the teens around mount tam and into the east bay. we are at 22% in mount diablo. we are not really looking
