comes a familiar message calls for action to stop the wave of gun violence and the proliferation of ghost guns thoughts and prayers are not enough. it's not enough. with that we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dionne lim. you're watching abc 7 news at 11. right away. we start with that developing news coming out of sacramento the shooting that happened outside of a club early this morning on k and 10th street the heart of the downtown entertainment district. left at least six people dead and 12 others injured abc 7 news reporter. tim. johns has been following the story all day long and joins us live on the scene with the very latest tim. yeah, dion the shooting took place around 2 am and i could tell you nearly 24 hours later. it is still an active scene with a heavy police presence those officers, of course trying to figure out what exactly happened. terrifying moments early sunday morning on the streets of

downtown sacramento this video showing the chaos that unfolded as several rounds of gunfire. hung out witnesses describe the scene. we're right there on that wall over there like just leaned up against the all and it had happened right down there across the street. and then we had just turned in the alley and then everybody was running against each other like running into each other and yeah. crazy one man with a bullet hole through his car. i heard gunshots. and then after the gunshots, i heard people people just start diving down the ground and falling down and the next thing i know i someone fell in front of my truck sacramento police say six people died 12 more were shot and suffered injuries to varying. trees, we know that a large fight took place just prior to the shootings and we have confirmed that there are multiple shooters police say they did recover a stolen gun at the scene the events shocking the sacramento community from the upper echelons of power. we want people to come downtown

and safely and people should come downtown down to every day citizens from fourth if you have information on sunday night several gathered in a local park to honor the victims and call for would he value devalue and human life, you know people are becoming desensitized by these murders. you're seeing this happen so often imploring the community to remember these events long after the initial shock wears off because in a week from now all the cameras going to be gone all the hype is gonna be gone. it's it's not going to be this much. now police are expected to remain out here for the rest of the evening and the street behind me here, which is home to many businesses and shops will also remain shuttered for the foreseeable future. i'm live in sacramento tonight tim johns abc 7 news still such an active scene tim many thanks to you now meantime, we are slowly learning who some of the shooting victims are to have been identified through their parents who are already sharing stories and memories with the media. we know one of the victims was a father of sitting down with abc

news pamela harris describes a sleepless night where she says her mother's intuition told her something had happened to one of her sons that their phone call. i just jump straight up and said, what's wrong? i know somebody's hurt. when my husband said it was sergio and i just i was just like in ours i couldn't think straight sergio was one of men and three women killed in a mass shooting outside a nightclub near the state capitol sunday morning pamela spent hours at the scene near the corner of 10th and k street. that's where she recalled her son's vivacious nature fun to be around like the party. have fun smiling all the time, you know, don't bother people the busy shopping. dining district is also where sergio's wife leticia began describing the moments. she last saw her husband unable to continue stricken with grief went to the mall. they went to the park.

so that sacramento's mayor darrell steinberg speaking at multiple, press conferences sunday called the gun violence plaguing the country and his city a sickness. frank turner the father of one of the deceased made this call to action charlie john ministry out streets quit playing his games. that are stunning their lives sacramento police say there were multiple shooters and our processing hundreds of pieces of evidence as for pamela. she has not had time to grieve. i'm just numb right now, but as the investigation years 24 hours makes this plea to law enforcement. i just want to know something. that's all i just want them to just tell me. tell our family something so we can do what we have to do. try to move on. governor newsom released a statement about the shooting

saying in part sadly. we once again mourn the lives lost and for those injured in yet another horrendous act of gun violence, jennifer and i send our heartfelt condolences to the family friends and to the wider community impacted by this terrible tragedy. the warriors play tonight in sacramento against the kings and before they took to the floor head coach steve kerr didn't want to talk about the game. he addressed the mass shooting that took place hours earlier joining us now is chris alvarez and chris this really seem to be something that hits close to home for him. yeah dion there was a moment of sense ahead of tonight's game in sacramento. coach kirsch says the events in sacramento just truly devastating you see the moment of silence right here ahead of the national anthem at golden 1 center players and coaches in a reflective mood before tip-off. now you mentioned it dion this does it home for steve kerr his father was shot and killed by two gum in 1984 and by route lebanon while he was serving as president of the american university of beirut now coach

kerr. again asking for a call to action on gun laws at some point, i would hope that we would actually think about our fellow citizens and do something about it. instead of play politics because that's all we do devastating and again, i'm so so sorry for the victims and their families and i you know family has gone through the same thing and we know how devastating it's you know just life-changing everything everything changes from here for all the victims families. and it's just time it's time for time for us to do something about it instead of having other moment of silence and then send thoughts and prayers. really tough to hear him talk about that draymond. green was also asked by the tragic events in sacramento after the game green says these are types of things that affect everyone and altered daily life

san francisco neighborhood is shaken tonight following a shooting near a playground at least two people are dead and two others injured according to a san francisco supervisor. here's abc 7 news. order tara campbell following this developing story. heavy police presence into the night two people shot and killed in san francisco's crocker amazon neighborhood supervisor. asha safaii passing along information from police. we know that there are four victims of this senseless act of gun violence, unfortunately to have passed away and two others. he says were injured. it's sad, my heart goes out to the victims and their families police called to the scene of brunswick street late sunday afternoon, maria van. lives less than a block away and she's shocked by the shooting.

i shouldn't speak white in here. yeah. so like i never heard like no shootings, nothing nobody's activities and nothing. so like i live here since last october so it lasted like that happens and truly terrifying moments for this neighborhood the shooting happening right near a playground. we can't see it at this time police do have the area blocked off. luckily. the park was the playground was almost a hundred percent empty. i think there was a mother in her child and she ran in the opposite direction. what are your thoughts? on it happening right near the playground. it's terrible and it's horrifying few details have been released by police. the investigation is ongoing. are looking for silver sedan that came and there was the one that rolled up and let out 20 plus shots at these individuals when they were on the sidewalk supervisor sapphiree says he's been fielding calls throughout. evening concerned neighbors wanting more information and he wants everyone to know this did not take place in the park it took place on the sidewalk.

better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. oh, i just heard. dreams in the shots and everybody was running against each other like running into each other. chaos has gunfire erupts in downtown sacramento in its wake devastation and heartbreak following a mass shooting. at least six people are dead and a dozen others injured. police say it started with a huge fight at about 2 am and then came the gunfire some of the videos that have surfaced you can hear dozens of shots fired in a matter of seconds. no arrests have been made and sacramento's police chief says they are looking for multiple

shooters abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has more on this story. we were probably about three blocks away. we heard it and it was like batman and we're like, oh man that sounded crazy gunfire echoing through sacramento early sunday transforming a lively part of downtown into a horrific crime scene dozens of shell casings now litter the ground, but let's say the mass shooting took place around 2 am and the 1,000 block of k street near a strip of nightclubs and the golden 1 center. we know that a large fight took place just prior to the shootings and we have confirmed. that there are multiple shooters a mode of still unknown i have a is laying out there. and i wanted i want some answers. harris waited hours to hear the tragic news that her son sergio harris was one of those killed my son has a wife he has children. all that and all that's gone. because somebody wanted to pull out a gun and just spray everybody up is coming out the

club. that's not right. frank turner learned his 29 year old son devasia lost his life. so he's our ministry out streets. quit playing his games. get us going in their lives. mayor darryl steinberg calling for gun violence to end. he says more police on patrol likely could not have prevented the tragedy. we don't know what happened, but if somebody drove i in an instant unloaded a rapid fire weapon. killing at least six people injuring many more. i don't know how in that instance. you can prevent that kind of a random tragedy many are still looking for answers like stevante clark his brother. stefan clark was killed by police in 2018 another brother killed by gun violence until we get together and stop this community violence until we get together and stop killing each other and then there's no way we can expect police to quit killing us, you know, there's no way we'll get fight this system if we're still fighting each other cornell bernard abc 7 news.

now you heard sacramento mayor darryl steinberg say there how this tragedy happened in an instant at a news conference earlier today. he spoke passionately about the larger problem this shooting reflects. the chief alluded to the unacceptable increase in gun violence. i want to remind all of you of a day not so long ago pre-covid. when the city went two years without a single homicide involving sacramento's youth two years. and now we are living in a different era and then there is the issue of guns. and of course, this is not a sacramento issue. it's a national issue. no surprise that any city. would be hit with this kind of terrible event. but here is what i know. it is beyond time to have a sane conversation about guns in america. we have a sickness. it's a sickness in our country. it's a sickness in our culture can't we agree?

that on one side of the line. firearms for hunting for sport even for self-defense is okay. and on the other hand ghost guns these guns that can be remade by parts that allow the firing of multiple rounds at a time are absolutely unacceptable in our community and in our country we must all take stock and ask ourselves. what can we do different? what can we do better? not ensure this will never happen again because that's impossible. but to do everything we can to minimize the chance that we will stand here like this morning the deaths. of innocent people and mourning their families strong message president biden put out a statement on the shooting calling on congress to take action. it reads in part quote ban ghost guns require background checks

for all gun sales ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines repeal gun manufacturers immunity from liability. these are just a few of the steps congress urgently needs to take to save lives. moving on now a partial building collapse in downtown santa rosa is under investigation tonight. firefighters say the awning of the california luggage company gave way just before noon today witnesses reported seeing a cloud of dust and then a pile of debris and broken glass left behind. woman associated with the store talked about what comes next first and foremost we're going to get the debris removed. okay, if the building fixed up and we plan to be open as soon as possible. the luggage company was close today when that awning collapsed. no one was hurt. a daily city family is offering a $10,000 reward to find the person who attacked their 84 year old grandfather. it's money from their own pockets that attack caught on

camera and video that were about to show you may be disturbing take a look. that is solomon hernandez gardening in his front lawn on march 25th. you can see there a man comes up from behind and kicks him inhiie the second time. he's been attacked. it happened once in 2020 and that's when the family installed cameras around his home. for this time it's too much now. it's too much. he was literally jump kicked from behind. he had to go through it twice. so we want to catch this bad guy who want to catch this criminal. that suspect then ran away into the neighborhood. a local group is about to take on san francisco's fentanyl crisis mothers against drug deaths will reveal this billboard tomorrow in union square the blistering ad is intended to ward tourists against visiting the city saying it is now known for its dirt
