predictions with the future backseat. the fda will likely make a decision on boosters in the coming months. san francisco has seen an uptick in covid cases, mostly caused by the ba.2 subvariant. kumasi: san francisco having the highest rate of cases in any county in california. ryan curry has been reporting on this and we will be checking back with him. we know as many major tech giants are welcoming ways back to the office this week there is a looming problem in san francisco because the city's vacancy rate is climbing as the demand for new office space is declining. according to a new report from bts, san francisco's economic recovery is very much worse than other u.s. cities. experts blame a larger percentage of fully remote jobs and soaring home prices forcing people to relocate. hope is on the horizon with several big tech companies i.e.

new leases. >> over the next few weeks will be much more of an optimistic view on san francisco. kumasi: real estate experts also predict an increase in demand for smaller companies making a commitment to san francisco as larger tech giants make the move to expand. reggie: it is the end of zoo meetings for the sonoma city council. tonight will be the return to an in person only format. at the start of the pandemic they went to fully virtual, then hybrid. this in-person format will also be used by all committees for public meetings. kumasi: big oil ceos are set to testify on capitol hill. jobina joining us on the live desk and desk meeting comes over a political messaging battle. jobina: bp and exxon officials are among executives that will face questioning from lawmakers.

out on bail. his face during charges -- he is facing charges for possessing a firearm because he was not supposed to have one. another suspect -- >> smiley martin and his brother we believe were together during this incident. drew: smiley martin is currently in the hospital. he was hurt during the shooting. he will be booked once he recovers. he was released in february after conviction of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. last year the sacramento das office wrote to the parole board said martin "has little regard for human life and the law." his release was then denied. this year authorities say this sentence was completed. >> i'm going to look at this as whether they should go back and tinker with the prison credit system so there are certain people who do knocked out this early. kumasi: six people were killed,

12 others were hurt. none of the three suspects face homicide or murder charges but police say that could change as they start -- as they sort through evidence. reggie: renewed calls for stricter gun laws. one bill that would target ghost gauze moved out of assembly yesterday. another bill would allow people to sue gun manufacturers and sellers for harm caused by their products. >> what it does is it holds gun manufacturers, gun dealers, gun shops, liable for the guns they put on the street right now. reggie: last night several bay area leaders, including the san francisco police chief, came together to honor those who died in sacramento. scott's is change takes time, asking everyone to do their part to help put a stop to their

chaos by taking incremental steps. when it comes to issues of gun violence you can find an ally by going to ab seven news.com/takeaction -- to abc7news.com/takeaction. san francisco is a new slight uptick in covid cases. drew: state -- kumasi: data shows san francisco has the highest rate of any meeting in california. ryan curry is live with more on what experts think is leading to this increase. ryan: good morning. the good news is hospitalizations and deaths remained very low in san francisco because the county has a very high vaccination rate. the current uptick in cases is nowhere close to what we saw during the massive omicron surge in the winter months. the trend is causing doctors in san francisco to keep a close eye on the way the cases are going.

we know the omicron ba.2 subvariant is more transmissible than the original omicron. a doctor at uhs f says it is nothing that would make any changes to protocols yet. he says as many people are traveling during spring break and with the loose covid measures, it is not surprising to see this increase. san francisco is a 131 new cases over a seven-day average. this time last month it was 71 new cases. deaths remained very low. the vaccination rate is currently at 83%. one thing to also note is the state is only reported covid data a few dogs -- a few times a week. the way that is going, it is something doctors say they will keep a close eye on. live in san francisco, ryan curry, abc7news. kumasi: encrypt -- reggie:

reggie: more severe weather expected in the southeast with damaging winds and huge hail. jobina at the live desk. jobina: at least two people have been killed in the storms. severe thunderstorms moved into georgia, south carolina, and florida. >> take cover. take cover. jobina: in prem burke -- in pembroke, georgia, a woman was killed when a possible tornado destroyed her mobile home. some homes taken down to nothing but their foundations. a twister hovered over the road. crews worked overnight to clear the roads. today more severe weather is

forecast in the same footprint as yesterday's storm. one person was also killed in johnson county, texas, where a twister touched down. in the past as two days there been 41 reported tornadoes in texas, alabama, mississippi, and georgia. kumasi: severe storms across the u.s. are taking their toll on the country's aging our grid. weather-related power outages have doubled because climate change is bringing on more severe crisis like hurricanes and wildfires. in california alone wildfires have affected tens of thousands of people every year and it could get worse this year with pg&e expected to continue forced shops to protect against wildfires. reggie: the father and daughter from illinois said they are lucky to be alive after they were struck by lightning. >> i saw my dad flying through the air and i was flying through the air and then i thought my dad was dead for a while. reggie: ashley and john both got

hit by lightning while trying to find their car in the middle of a thunderstorm in tampa. they were attending a yankees spring training game. john suffered a broken cheekbone and ashley has a burn line around her neck. otherwise they are ok. obviously it was a terrifying experience. >> i wake up with my face in the mud and my feet laying in the parking lot and i cannot move anything. i thought i had a stroke. reggie: john joked he and his daughter have superpowers that help them survive. the yankees are already promising to make it up to them by offering them tickets to a game later this spring. kumasi: in the south bay home security cameras could be the key to cracking a case of a mysterious anti-semitic flyer. someone dropped these flyers in san jose's willow grid -- willow glen neighborhood.

this is being investigated as a hate crime. officers are asking for help solving the case. >> look at your ring cams and your surveillance footage. if you can pinpoint a window in which a stranger they have opted your neighborhood and appeared to be dropping flyers or baggies containing flyers, please bring that forward to detectives. it will be pivotal to solving the case. kumasi: anti-semitic flyers were also found earlier this year in palo alto, berkeley, and san francisco, as well as several other states. new at 6:00, the return of tourists to capitol hill and their discarded food and trash should have been a tell-all sign. reggie: police captured an aggressive box, but not before -- an aggressive fox, but not before it caused chaos. a congressman was taken to walter reed where he received several shots after getting bit. >> i feel something lunge at the back of my leg.

court appearance yesterday. he is charged with assault and firearms possession. it will be back in court in may. please solve -- police also arrested smiley martin on weapons charges. investigators are still sorting through a mountain of evidence. >> we received over 170 videos through the qr code we shared with the public. the public has been great about submitting video. we have to go through a lot of videos so investigators have a lot of work to do. reggie: the work includes finding a motive. kumasi: family members are expressing frustration after learning no charges will be filed in the death of their loved one. three officers shot and killed him in june of 2020. officers say they opened fire after he rammed their cruisers while trying to get away for stolen car. his death has sparked numerous protests. family members on a protest from the das office. >> if you dive into that report,

you will see inconsistency after inconsistency. they try to defend the indefensible. kumasi: his pregnant girlfriend was in the passenger seat and was wounded in the shooting. his family has filed a civil rights lawsuit but the da's investigation has delayed at. reggie: in that he's bait a man who had a child with him is in custody for a carjacking in alameda. officers found the stolen black honda accord and the little girl near the oakland airport. you can see the feet on the back of the squad car. another man sitting in the honda -- police say the carjackers punched him and drove off with little girl. relationship between the girl and the suspect is not clear. kumasi: alameda city council is adopting a strict privacy policy for its police automated license plate leaders.

kumasi: developing news this morning as we take a live look at the airport tarmac at the sfo. jetblue is offering to make a deal. it is looking to buy budget carrier spirit airlines, potentially spoiling of competing bid from frontier airlines. many people are concerned this deal could squash the low cost options just as airfare costs are jumping up. abc 7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is looking at the potential changes. gloria: experts say we could be looking at higher airfare prices if jetblue acquires spirit that would mean even more headaches

for travelers already dealing with frequent delays and cancellations. jetblue airways core offering to buy spirit airlines for $3.6 billion. this throws a wrench into spirits agreement to merge with frontier. jetblue offering all cash and 50% more than what frontier plan to pay. ilhetblue fetoheoa and make decisio onhat is best for shareholders. last year the justice department sued to prevent jetblue partnering with american airlines, arguing it would drive up prices and also reduce competition. some worry that could happen if this merger takes based. >> consumers may be looking at higher air prices as we see when the airline industry consolidates -- when a merger happens, routes get caught. gloria: domestic airfares are already up more than 40% since the beginning of the year as the post-pandemic travel demand

takes off and jet fuel prices increase. this is being compounded by spring break travel. an economist at online booking site hopper recommends prices keep rising through june at about 30 dollars per ticket. the average domestic airfare is now $330. experts recommend booking your flight by early may if you are planning a trip this summer and they say there are deals. the key is to be flexible and know when to look. for domestic flights, it is recommended you look one to three months before you travel. reggie, start making the summer plans now. reggie: i already have. today lawmakers will introduce a new bill aimed at improving air travel safety in response to violent in-flight incidents that have skyrocketed during the pandemic. according to the faa there were 6000 unruly passenger incidents last year. the bill would hold those passengers accountable.
