along the beach today. we have been here most of the day as the crowd grew. this beach is pretty packed. people are pumped about the hot april day. the beaches of pacifica providing an escape from the heat. >> i will probably make a day of it. the weather is unseasonably amazing and i am going to try to capitalize on it. reporter: vanessa is making a day of it at lynn demar beach with her children. >> i saw that the heat was climbing and we do not get to the beach often. reporter: she says it offers them a break from their home in the san francisco bay view district. >> think it's hot inside because there is not much air conditioning so we try to stay outdoors. >> my children were so excited. they were ready to go out.

be in your moment. fantastic! ask your doctor about ibrance. larry: with gas prices and inflation so high, food insecurity is rising across the bay area. we went to a food bank and talked about how they are coping with increased demand. reporter: at food bank warehouse in concorde, the richness of the bay area can seem 1000 miles away. food insecurity has skyrocketed in all regions and now with inflation and gas prices increasing, food needs are rising again. >> we currently serve 260,000

people every month. pre-pandemic, 180,000. reporter: cassie bates is a spokesperson for the food bank. she says in order to meet increased needs, she and her organization has partnered with a foundation and launched the 200 meal challenge. they have a goal of hitting $500,000. >> we can purchase two meals with one dollar donated so we can provide 2 million meals if the match is met. reporter: the demand will not subside anytime soon. it is expected to stay elevated for another few years. that strains the food bank. there is a dramatic increase in the cost of doing business but they have also had a chance to learn new ways to serve those who rely on them. >> everything was accelerated.

if something was on the back burner, it was like, let's do it. reporter: for them, this is more than a job. it is a way to answer a call coming from those in need. >> we are passionate and dedicated to ending hunger. kristen: a new survey from the bay area council shows a bleak attitude among residents about living in the bay area. the biggest reason is crime. more than half of the residence, 52%, disagree with the statement that the bay area is a safe place to live. 65% say they avoid downtown areas like oakland, san jose, and san francisco because of crime. and car and home break-ins are a top concern. >> it is really bad, the way residents feel about the region now is probably one of the worst we have seen. kristen: crime was mentioned as

a reason for some residents leaving the area altogether. bay area council conducted a similar poll each year since 1980. larry: in so many videos you see people being fearful. it makes sense but i presume that they feel better about the weather. kristen: but maybe not at this moment. you might want to get out to escape the heat. sandhya: the good news is today is the hottest day so it is all downhill from here. starting tomorrow we begin to cool. 24 hour temperature change, up six degrees in san jose. up four degrees in oakland. it is hot outside. still green on the camera because of the rain we saw last month. 85 in downtown san francisco today. ralo 's. noticeat.

saturday, the wind will kick up going into sunday. bearable for the bay area if you do not like the hot weather. and then a system will bring us rain and cooler weather with gusty conditions on what -- on monday. and then we have another opportunity for rain on thursday. we will take it. kristen: when temperatures drop, they really drop. larry: innovative new project holds the promise of saving waters from evaporation and generating clean energy at the same time while possibly revolutionizing a key part of the water system. reporter: they crisscross the central valley, driving one of the most productive food producing economies in the world but soon irrigation canals and aqueducts could help our thousands of california homes and businesses. >> at the most basic level we

study how to expand canals that go from 20 feet to 110 feet and put solar on the top of them. reporter: in other words, turning canals into solar powered producers. once they are suspended in place, the test grades are expected to generate five megawatts of renewable energy but the ceo believes they might also help protect the precious water from climate change. >> after looking at the open canals driving from san francisco to l.a., after years of drought, surely there must be something we can do to put a lid on evaporation. reporter: compared to existed -- existing solar farms, it they believe they also have economic advantages. they are on publicly owned land

and run close to pumping stations, potentially making it easier to distribute. >> we are the irrigation provider but also electric utility. so this project could benefit on the same canal. reporter: the project is believed to be the first of its kind in the country but might not be the last. water in california rarely stays in one place and if this pilot program is successful, backers hope it could be duplicated across the state. an engineering professor also studied this canopy concept and believes that benefits could be scaled up without affecting open space or taking farmland out of production, potentially placing solar canopies over the aqueducts carrying water from northern to southern california. >> if we covered all 4000 miles of canals in the state, our hypothesis going in is that we would save 65 million gallons of

kristen: the board that oversees the oscars will decide tomorrow the possible punishment for will smith after he slapped chris rocks at the academy awards two weeks ago. i everyone just wants to get this michael finney is here now with consumer news. reporter: mortgage rates are creeping up every day. the average 30 year mortgage rate is 4.72%, the highest in three years. n 1.5% in the past three months. the fastest since 1994. a year ago the 30 year rate was 3.18%. the increase comes a few weeks after the fed increased interest

from the roosevelt room, vice president kamala harris presiding over the confirmation vote in the senate. jackson held one-on-one meetings with 97 senators and also set through over 20 hours of questioning during her hearings and filed 300 30 pages of written responses. that is more written questions than any previous supreme court nominee. all democrats rallied behind judge jackson along with three republicans. >> judge jackson will go down in history as an american giant on whose shoulders others will stand tall. ike: republicans tried to paint her soft on crime, mitch mcconnell slamming her before the vote, claiming she is failing to commit to opposing expansion of the supreme court. >> the solution is for all the justices to stay in their lane. there is one right number of justices who seek to follow the law. the number is nine. ike: abc news no learning jackson promised republican

senator susan collins that she would never take a position on that issue. when jackson joined the court this fall, she will take on several controversial cases, encompassing the death penalty, clean water act and humane treatment of animals in our food supply. what are the biggest cases of the fall so far is the challenge to harvard and the university of north carolina's use of race in college admissions, case that could term the future of affirmative action. judge jackson says she will recuse herself, given herself on the harvard board of overseers. abc news, washington. larry: house speaker nancy pelosi has tested positive for covid-19. her weekly press conference was canceled today, as was a trip to asia. pelosi attended events with the president this week. this video shows just how close she was to president biden just yesterday. a spokesperson says pelosi is vaccinated, boosted, tested regularly and will quarantine. kristen: jeopardy champion amy

that breaking news is in livermore where the chp has shut down all eastbound lanes of interstate 580. this is just west of las colinas road. the chp will only say that investigating in earlier incident they're being rather tight-lipped about an hour ago. we saw officers walking down the lanes of 580 traffic is being diverted off the freeway at north livermore avenue as you can imagine there is a big traffic backup just look at what's happened out there. here's a live view from sky 7. the chp says they do not have an estimated time for reopening the freeway as soon as we get any new details. we will get it to you right away, but they've been walking that stretch of freeway presumably looking for
