that breaking news is in livermore where the chp has shut down all eastbound lanes of interstate 580. this is just west of las colinas road. the chp will only say that investigating in earlier incident they're being rather tight-lipped about an hour ago. we saw officers walking down the lanes of 580 traffic is being diverted off the freeway at north livermore avenue as you can imagine there is a big traffic backup just look at what's happened out there. here's a live view from sky 7. the chp says they do not have an estimated time for reopening the freeway as soon as we get any new details. we will get it to you right away, but they've been walking that stretch of freeway presumably looking for evidence, but we will know more as we get

it. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm karina nova the other top story today is the heat it's unusually warm. super fun like stuck on the on the heat the heat was climbing and we don't get to get to the beach too often about to kick on that ac. it's just gorgeous out today. unseasonably warm temperatures across the bay area even flirting with records in some areas and that prompted some people to head to the coast to find relief now we have abc 7 news team coverage for you with cornell bernard in the north bay. we're more than 100 firefighters are being hired back early because of the in fire danger and tara campbell is on the peninsula where many headed to the beaches today, but we'll get to that in a moment. but let's begin with abc 7 news meteorologist sandy patel for the very latest on the conditions out there right now sandy. yeah, dan, we had a spring scorcher today and we're setting records. let me show you the highs so far and the records so these are the cities that have now come in at

record levels, san jose tying 93 degrees santa rosa 90 oakland 89 downtown breaking the old record set back in 1989 of 87. days and livermore 91 the old record was 89 degrees check out the high so far and other areas will have the official word in about a half an hour. from the national weather service it got up to 86 degrees in san francisco 90 in redwood city 87 in concord 90 in santa cruz 81 and half moon bay. so it was pretty warm and in case you want to step outside and you're thinking about going out for a walk well this evening at 6 o'clock. it's still going to be more but as we head towards about nine o'clock a good idea to allow that cooling before you head out. it's going to be actually nicer 50s 60s coast and bay inland areas will be on the mild side and everyone will start to cool off as we head towards tomorrow, but who's gonna feel it first? and when will it spread i'll have your weekend forecast coming right up dan okay. sandy. thanks a lot. now the sizzling spring heat that we're feeling across the bay area is prompting the state to hire more firefighters just as quickly as they possibly can

and it is all do of course. to the increased fire danger abc 7 news live at cal fire headquarters in santa rosa with details tonight cornell dan more than a 100 seasonal firefighters will soon be on the job at this base and others in the north bay, and they're being hired more than a month early because of this major heat wave we're feeling and it does feel a lot like summer. bulldozer training class under the hot sun in healdsburg. these crews may be called on to cut fire lines whenever and wherever the next big fire breaks out to make sure we're prepared to operate heavy equipment on the fire line and be as proactive and ready as we can this week's spring heat wave is not doing firefighters any favors. it's already moved the timeline up on fire season we're seeing questions now in early april that we would see in mid to late

june and as this week continues with the weather, we're having that that could bump that average out even farther so our bulldozers are staffed by our heavy fire equipment operators. chief nickel says the hot weather why cal fire is hiring more seasonal firefighters than it has in years 120 alone for its son. napa and lake county unit and the crews are starting nearly a and a half earlier than what's usually budgeted for and at this point we're forecast to hire peak staffing by the end of may, which is extremely early compared to years past last season, we caught up with these cal fire recruits in the hills of marin county. they gave us an inside. look how grueling and extreme they're training really is i took the job because i wanted to labor i was working in an office. this is an opportunity to do something that it's pretty important work it actually matters. fire season no longer a summer event. it's become year-round the past

karina it really is gorgeous here. we've been out here for most of the day as the crowd's been growing and as you can see behind us, this is really a very busy beach surfers families everybody enjoying the day all very much pumped about this hot april day. from sandcastles to surfers the beaches of pacifica providing an escape from the heat probably gonna be here all day make a day of it. i mean the weather's like unseasonably amaz. so yeah, i'm gonna try to capitalize on that for sure. vanessa. breaky is also making a day of it at lindamar beach along with her children. i just saw that it was climbing the heat was climbing and we don't get to get to the beach too often the beach offering a break she says from their home in san francisco's bayview district inside it gets a little hot because there's not too much air conditioning so we kind of try to stay outside as much as possible and a few miles north that rockaway beach danica. hassanisi is welcoming the summer like weather along with

her children. they were so excited. they couldn't contain themselves. they were ready to go out keeping a close eye on them potential sneaker waves. she says are a concern sneaker waves and coming to get you rockaway is known for those any beaches really. the coast so it's good to be aware and while the ocean conditions are holding stable the heat is what to watch out for says north county fire people need to be advised or beware of what their body conditions are doing if they experience themselves getting hot, you know, make sure to stay hydrated find some shade wear loose clothes packed parking lots and increased traffic or another concern some people outside the area might might not be familiar with where the the roadways turns are and increase congestion, so just be mindful of traffic be mindful if you are riding a bicycle at the crowds on the beach sun hats and sunscreen for scott wagner the plan for staying cool is pretty

a deadly shooting that happened just before nine o'clock last night near lake merritt a police say officers responded to reports of a shooting near the cul-de-sac on lakeshore avenue in front of a luxury high-rise. not far from the amphitheater when they arrived they found a man who had been shot police say it was a robbery attempt the victim died at the hospital. this is the third deadly shooting on that street since november oakland police chief laurent. armstrong says more officers will be stationed in that area. we have made contact with our council member we have reaching out to community members. will be attending a community meeting to have a discussion next week regarding the violence and our response to the violence.

this is the 31st deadly shooting in oakland so far this year at this time last year. there were 36 republican state lawmakers are urging the governor to withdraw a regulation that allows for the early release of some inmates the lawmakers say smiley martin one of the men arrested in the sacramento mousse shooting was released after serving only a fraction of a 10 year sentence. the department of corrections defends the release saying martin had accumulated enough credits to qualify for release but republicans say the state should protect the public. they want the governor to let that regulation expire to prevent early releases like martin's. as part of our ongoing effort to build a better bay area we are continuing our coverage of the housing crisis that so many californians are facing for the past three weeks abc 7 news reporter loose pena has spoken to a number of tenants on the verge of homelessness and the assembly member who introduced legislation to extend covid rent protections.

now tonight, she'll tell you the story of one landlord who says their tenants are using the covid-19 protections as an excuse to avoid paying rent and eviction. in january of 2020 rakashian tripty's biggest nightmare began. they rented their three bedroom house in fremont to a tenant who they say has been defrauding several landlords for years. they had no idea he gave us a check. and he gave us a fake w-2 he gave us a fake credit report two months later. the pandemic hit is your tenon used in the covid protections to stay in your home. of course before covered also is intention was not to pay. but because of covid he got extra months to stay in these property owners say their tenant has refused to pay for over two years and owes them more than 100,000 in rent. our financial planning is totally messed up at this point just because we are forced by the county.
