cornell bernard is calfire headquarters in santa rosa with details. >> more than a hundred seasonal firefighters will be here. they are being hired more than a month early. really because of the scorching hot temperatures. that feels a lot like summer. bulldozer training class under the hot sun here. these crews maybe cut onto cut fire lines wherever. >> make sure we are prepared to operate heavy equipment on the fire line. >> this is not doing firefighters any favors. it has moved up the timeline on fire season.

>> this is what we would see in mid-to-late june and as this week continues with the weather that we are having, that can bump the average out even farther. >> the bulldozers are staffed by our operators. >> this is why calfire is hiring more seasonal firefighters that it has in years. 120 alone for its sonoma, napa and lake county unit. the crews are starting nearly a month and a half earlier than what is budgeted for. >> we are forecasted to hire peak staffing by the end of may. that is extremely early. >> last season, they caught up with these calfire recruits. they gave us an inside look at how grueling and extreme their training really is. >> i took the job because i was working in an office and this is an opportunity to do something that is pretty important work that actually matters. >> fire season no longer a summer event.

build a better bay area, we are covering the housing crisis that so many are facing. over the past few weeks, louis peña has spoken with tenants on the verge of homelessness and lawmakers trying to extend protections. >> after we covered the story was contacted by several small property owners who say they are also in the same boat. tonight you will meet a couple who says their tenant is refusing to pay more than $100,000 in rent. >> in january of 2020, the biggest nightmare began. they rented a three-bedroom house to a tenant who has been defrauding several landlords for years. they had no idea. >> it gave us a chance -- he

put their names as a zel recipient so it appeared they were getting there on money back. >> it shows it was deposited into my account. >> it went straight to the scammers. >> my money was gone. went -- when i want to go look, i had six dollars left. >> i guess my name is not my name somehow. this does not actually go to my name. >> each filed a claim with wells fargo. each was denied. the bank said they authorized the payment and zel has no fraud protections. >> you know it is fraudulent. >> they said they don't guarantee zel. >> it was just you lost the money. >> weeks later, with no explanation, the bank quietly but the money back in their accounts. >> i was very surprised. i woke up my husband.
