there is a wind advisory for the higher elevations and a red flag warning for solano county. it is cooler compared to yesterday with inland areas in the upper 70's. look for the low 70's. at the beach it is cool with the sea breeze in the upper 50's. it is a clear night ahead. we have cooling continuing into monday with the chance of rain that i will tell you about, coming up. liz: we have breaking news to tell you about in the nfl. pittsburgh steeler's quarterback dwayne haskins is dead after being hit by a car in south florida early this morning. this is video of haskins, a first-round draft pick in 2019 by the washington commanders. espn reports that the former ohio state star was hit on the side of a roadway after getting out of his car. he was training in south florida with other steelers order backs, running backs, and wide receivers. he was 24 years old. very sad news.

meantime, san jose police are investigating an early morning shooting. a man was found near meridian way and pedro street at 4:30 this morning and take into the hospital with a life-threatening injury. officials don't have a suspect or motive at this time. we will bring you updates as we get that. new details about the driver who hit and killed two women in san jose and took off. neighbors are sharing outrage and what they saw with abc 7. the deadly crash happened in east san jose not far from a school. it comes as the city is on pace to set a record for traffic deaths. amanda: this surveillance footage shows the suspected driver involved in thursday's deadly hit and run moments after the collision. he is seen turning from ocala avenue onto wesley court in san jose. >> he tried driving into my

street in order to flee faster, however, my street is a dead end. amanda: seconds later cameras captured the driver speeding out of the cul-de-sac away from the scene where he is believed to have hit and killed two women in a nearby crosswalk. >> how can you take two innocent lives and flee? it is pure selfishness, it is inconsiderate, it is ultimately a huge tragedy. amanda: two women were walking in this painted crosswalk along no-call avenue and oakton court when the red truck hit them and took off. friday evening the driver remained at large. >> i could have been any of our family members. that is why we want to arrest the person. amanda: the victims were a mother and her adult daughter. she lives across the street from the women and is familiar with their evening strolls around the neighborhood. >> the fact that yesterday their

daily activity ended up with them being deceased is insane. amanda: other neighbors shared outrage, feeling the safety of east san jose residents is not being prioritized. >> this is a residential area with schools. i am infuriated that this is not the first time it has happened. as long as this keeps continuing, as long as there is no safety of the structure for pedestrians, this will keep continuing. amanda: the city says that there is a safety improvement project in the works that would bring flashing begins, a pedestrian island, and more to this very crossing. measures expected to be completed by fall 2023. >> it seems we cannot build the safety improvements fast enough to keep up with the pace of collisions and fatalities. amanda: the department of transportation says between 2016 and 2020 there were three

crashes at this intersection resulting in two minor injuries. he says across the city there have never been this many traffic fatalities by this point in the year. >> we have been pushing on many levers to improve road safety in the city. we have a lot more work to do. amanda: thursday's hit and run marks san jose's 24th fatal traffic incident this year and the city's 13th and 14th pedestrian deaths. liz: here is one more look at the truck san jose police are looking for. they released of these photos asking anyone with information to call the number on your screen. a cash reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. this morning the british prime minister boris johnson's office says that he has traveled to meet with president zelenskyy to show solidarity. dozens are dead and wounded

after missile hit a train station in eastern ukraine where thousands had gathered some officials say that the crowd of mostly women and children were trying to flee a looming russian offensive. karina michelle has the latest. >> at least 50 people are dead and 100 hurt after the single deadliest attack on civilians since russia invaded ukraine. a missile hit a train station in eastern ukraine where thousands had gathered to try to flee. ukrainian officials say that russia was behind the attack. the regions governor said, "the enemy clearly knew it was a real station and did it to prevent people from leaving the region." >> there are individuals who burned alive in these cars. these were innocent women, children, and grandmothers trying to evacuate on trains and they were the target of the attack. >> russia denies that they were behind the bloodshed but the pentagon is adamant that this was there doing.the president

food, shelter, and transportation to the hundreds of evacuees arriving in tijuana daily. an inside look at the efforts from a bay area woman on the front lines. >> i arrived at the border. >> this is the scene at the airport in tijuana, mexico. volunteers registering ukrainians as they land in the border city, creating a list of those hoping to enter the u.s.. she took this video and these photos. the russian-born redwood city resident is on the front lines. >> there are medically vulnerable people here. we have a 10 --day-old baby. we have people after operations. >> volunteers are working around-the-clock, lucky to get a few hours of sleep. >> never ending, chasing our tail to make sure that these people have a place to sleep that is decently safe-ish and have food. >> there are no nonprofits, just

people wanting to help. >> a lot of us have put our jobs on hold. my voice is going because i have been talking nonstop for seven days. >> they have managed to come up with a system to keep track of the number of people and provide food, shelter, and transportation. >> the alternative to that is thousands of people sitting at the border in unsanitary conditions for many days. >> working with the government in tijuana they secured this recreational facility, providing some sense of security amid the overwhelming uncertainty. >> it creates a humanitarian crisis about to happen. i am really hoping that our government steps up. >> the u.s. is processing roughly 500 ukrainian refugees a day say volunteers, allowing them in temporarily. as for how long this band of

sorry. i lost it. i fell to the floor. dion: it will take time before any of what happened to melanie whiteford's cousin will make any sense. >> it doesn't feel real. it doesn't feel like it actually happened. dion: devon was a father with a love of music, fashion, and the great outdoors. he and his partner were taking a walk when he was shot and killed in a robbery attempt. for what meredith told me was a louis vuitton back. >> i was devastated by the news. i didn't know how to process it. dion: zooming in from their hometown of austin, texas, devon fell in love with the bay area on a road trip but never let distance get in the way of their tightknit relationship or taking care of others.

these people did not just take a life. they took part of all of our hearts. liz: in washington, d.c., celebration for a history making judge. >> i have been looking forward for a while to introduce you to the next associate justice of the united states supreme court, the honorable ketanji brown jackson. liz: judge ketanji brown jackson will be the first black woman in u.s. history to serve on the u.s. supreme court. >> it has taken 230 two years and 115 prior appointments for a black woman to be selected to serve on the supreme court of the united states. elevated to justice jackson until her mentor stephen breyer officially retires from the court this summer. her confirmation means the court will have four women on the bench for the first time. a local nonprofit is in need of help. the courageous women foundation has been providing survivors of domestic violence shelters and resources to escape their abusers. the group is on the verge of losing its home. >> six month ago, woman we will call mary, found safety in this home. >> i'm really happy i got out because i know a lot of people do not make it out. luz: she said the attacks from her boyfriend of two years escalated from verbal abuse to physical abuse. she opened up about the morning she almost lost her life. >> he choked me and he threatened me, and that morning

i was really afraid that i wouldn't make it out. luz: after weeks of planning she escaped. do you feel lucky? >> yes, i do feel lucky and i feel blessed. yeah. luz: at an undisclosed location the founder of the nonprofit courageous women association showed us a transitional home that has become a safe haven for women like mary. the women pay a fee for the program which gives them housing, professional help, and a place to laugh, heal, and cook. >> sometimes we have cook-offs which is amazing. luz: they have gotten close to 800 calls of women in need. they can only house 14 at a time. >> we provide up to two years of housing for women. it is a paid program. luz: that is the problem. many women lost their jobs during the pandemic and cannot

afford the programs fee anymore. the nonprofit is on the verge of losing this home. at one point the founder sacrificed having a roof over her head to make sure the women had a safe place. >> we are on our last leg. we have a month left in this house, which is unfortunate. luz: she opened a gofundme hoping the community could help them raise close to 23 thousand dollars that would cover rent and bills until june. luz: this is your refuge? >> yes. liz: a check on the forecast, tracking the grass fire. frances: that is where we have a red flag warning in solano county. we will see strong winds throughout the weekend. we will start with live doppler 7 with clear skies now. it will be a sunny and windy

day. i want to take you to the red flag warning in solano county in effect until tomorrow evening at 5:00. gusts could reach 50 miles an hour and during the daytime humidity levels will drop to as low as 5%. because of the fire, these fires will spread quickly because of these conditions. there is a wind advisory for the higher elevations in the north bay mountains and east bay hills. the areas highlighted in yellow until tomorrow afternoon is where gusts can reach 60 miles an hour, so the wind will be a big factor this weekend. look out for possible downed tree limbs and power outages. in the immediate bay area, the wind is light and will pick up. it is really pretty as we look from the exploratorium to the bay bridge. in san francisco it is 54. this time we are looking from the east bay hills towards mount diablo, just clear skies throughout the day. we will get plenty of sunshine,

but the wind will keep temperatures on the cooler side. in santa rosa it is 58. low 50's in petaluma and livermore. fairfield is getting up to 62. here is the fire from mount tam looking towards the car heinous bridge. the grass fire has parts of the bridge blocked. chp has issued a sig alert. traffic is backing up towards hercules. here are your forecast headlines. the wind will be the big thing, gusty at the coast and over the hills. the cooling trend continues. it started yesterday and continues through the weekend into monday where we will have winter-like weather. it will be rainy and chilly so have your umbrellas handy. highs are on the cooler side again. at the beaches, only the upper 50's and half moon bay. around the bay, upper 60's to low 70's.

san jose is mild at 75. upper 70's through some of the inland areas like concord and livermore. overnight lows are mainly clear in the 40's for some locations. some low 50's like richmond and san jose give. the rain system is headed our way by 5:00 for the monday morning commute. mostly dry except for the north bay coast. by lunchtime mostly clear. it will bring snow to the sierra six to 12 inches. rainfall estimates are very light. less than a quarter inch. maybe 10 for some. it is windy and cooler though still warm for the interior locations. look how much temperatures gust for inland communities. 20 degrees cooler with a chance of rain in the morning and a chance of rain towards thursday.

liz: building a better bay area with a focus on education. the 1619 project documents the arrival of the first enslaved africans in the english colony of virginia. a picture book for kids has been published. leanne melendez has a look at the impact that the book is expected to have. >> this was a beautiful civilization that existed before whips and chains and oppression. leanne: the children's book shows people living in west and central africa with their own traditions and customs until they attempted to take that away from them. >> this book was written with

black children in mind to be able to speak directly to them about what their origin story is and to feel proud of the people who came before them. leanne: the authors selected the title "born on the water" because africans were taken away from their homeland, put on a slave ship, and it was at sea they were forced to become a new people. the san francisco unified school district has taken interest in how to teach this hard topic to all children. the deputy superintendent of instruction has reached out to all children. >> make space for them to feel, process, respond, and if necessary take a break. >> it is never ok to treat people like they aren't human. providing opportunities for students to express themselves about how they are feeling about this information is critical to racial healing, understanding, and for all of us to be able to move forward. leanne: for all students it is a chance to learn about the black

the fire department tweeted that the two acres are burning with the captain advising need for additional resources. the smoke is drifting into crockett will stop the number four and five lanes are closed on eastbound 80 with traffic backing up into contra costa county. there is the red flag warning? frances: the red flag warning is in effect for solano county in vallejo. the red flag warning continues until 5:00. they will be strongest tonight and tomorrow. the fire that has started can easily spread quickly and we will keep an eye on this for you. here are the current conditions. it is called in napa near vallejo, but they will pick up. i will show you that with the forecast animation by 10:00.

we will see them -- we will see the wind come from the north to 14 miles an hour in napa. 38 mile-per-hour winds in fairfield. the strong, gusty conditions will continue at the beaches. 48 miles per hour tomorrow. the wind advisory extends for some of the higher elevations through tomorrow afternoon. i will have your complete forecast, coming up. liz: police have doubled the number of officers downtown and increase the number of gang enforcement officers throughout the city. investigators said rival gangs were involved in the shootout last weekend that left six people dead and 12 injured. two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting into third was arrested for a weapons charge most police said that there were five gunmen involved. in the south bay the mayor of san jose announced a proposal. he says he can stop the increase in violent crime the city has

been seeing. zach fuentes was there for the announcement. zach: violent crime is on the rise, his office pointing to an increase in violent crime, felony assault, sexual assaults, and robberies. this year is on track to be similar. in his press conference he spoke about action that the city has taken, including hiring more than 200 san jose police officers, launching programs for young adults, and expanding mental health response units, but still the crime increase continued. two main factors have been linked to the crime increase. >> the rising rates of releases of pre-felon detainees that would have been detained. zach: what he calls a persistent scourge of meth addiction. expanding drug treatment for arrestees, support small businesses hit by robberies, and focus on what he calls a

revolving door at the jail. >> looking at data over 14 months, i found 30 arrestees who had been arrested a minimum of 10 times over that time of 14 months. one individual, 19 times. get, whether it is physical bodies in patrol cars making a difference or changing the law and legislation. what is occurring now is not working. zach: the city controls the san jose police department. much of what happens after an arrest falls on the county and courts. he says he can bring jurisdictions together. >> requires collaboration. zach: the proposal needs to happen through the city council, aake several weeks. liz: 10 years is how long will smith is banned from the academy awards after slapping chris rock live on stage during the oscars

rockett has docked at the space station. they had technical issues but all is well. crews are working on opening the hatch to receive the astronauts. it started with the rocket launch on friday. rob mcmillan from los angeles explains who was on board and what they will do well in space. >> ignition. lift off. godspeed acxiom one. rob: a new chapter in manned spaceflight. the first time that in all private crew went into space on a nongovernment spacecraft. the commander is a former nasa astronaut who spoke before the flight. >> it has been a real privilege to work and train alongside these three remarkable gentlemen. i can say with zero hesitation that we are ready to fly. >> who are these guys? an american, canadian, and israeli and they obviously have a lot of money. they are paying close to $55

million each for more than a week in space and a trip to the international space station. >> axiom is a space tourist company and they basically have private citizens who paid their way to go up. >> he runs the columbia space center. is it fair to call them astronauts? >> i think so. the standard definition of astronaut is you have to make it to a certain height. rob: that would be 50 miles. the international space station is over 250 miles up, so they would qualify. each visitor would have a set of experiments to run, so that is one reason why they preferred to not be called tourists. as a gift for their on the space station, they will bring food prepared by a celebrity chef. what can we take from the mission? the interest in a trip like this gets us all talking about science. >> that is the big take away.

firefighters as soon as possible. >> bulldozer training class under the hot sun. these crews might be called on the cut fire lines whenever and wherever the next big fire breaks out. >> make sure that we are prepared to operate heavy equipment on the fire line and be as proactive and ready as we can. >> this spring heat wave is not doing firefighters any favors. it has moved up the timeline on fire season. >> we are seeing conditions in early april that we would see in mid to late june. as this week continues with the weather we are having, that could bump the average out further. the bulldozers are staffed by the heavy fire equipment operators. >> the hot weather is why calfire is hiring more seasonal firefighters than in years. 120 for the sonoma, napa, and lake county unit and the crews are starting a month and a half

earlier than what is usually budgeted for. >> we are forecast to higher peak staffing by the end of may, which is extremely early compared to years past. >> last season we caught up with these recruits in the hills of marin county. they gave us an inside look at how grueling and extreme their training is. >> i took the job because i wanted the labor. i was working in an office in this is an opportunity to do important work that matters. >> fire season has become year-round. the past five years have brought epic wildfires to the bay area and across the state with hundreds of homes lost. in 2020 alone 4 million acres burned in california. >> with the conditions we are seeing now, it will be a long season. liz: that was cornell barnard. it will be a long season. we are seeing at this morning. frances: we are seeing it with the fire danger in vallejo.

it is quiet now with light wind at this point. here is another view from. mount tam looking towards the fire you can see the smoke has cleared, so the fire is under control. they have done a great job containing that, but the wind will be an issue over the weekend. it will be gusty at the beaches, the coast, and at the higher elevations. the cooling trend that started yesterday will continue into monday where we have rainy and chilly weather expected, feeling more like winter. the fire was in the solano county area, where we have a red flag warning in effect until tomorrow evening. gusts into tonight and tomorrow morning could reach 50 miles an hour with the daytime heating down to 5%. the fires that start could spread quickly, so it's great they got that under control. for higher elevations in the north bay and east bay hills, we
