the terrifying moments the fire has spread. out to the bulk of the pier in benicia as cruise continue to try to limit it from spreading. i'm spencer christian gusty winds and increased fire danger are the headlines in my accuweather forecast coming up abc 7 news at 11:00 starts now. building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. good evening, and thank you for joining us. you're watching a special edition of abc 7 news right away two major fires today in the bay. area crews are still at the port of benicia tonight after it went up in flames the flames all but wiped out a wooden pier you can see all of the smoke and the flames then in san jose a home depot has been gutted after a fire. erupted this evening sightings of smoke could be seen not only in san jose, but all across the south bay and at times it even looked like the entire building was burning that is where we begin tonight. the store is on blossom hill

road near santa teresa boulevard right across from the oak ridge mall sky 7 was up for several hours and we periodically saw some small explosions as you can imagine how to building not only of this magnitude but containing home supplies many. items in their flammable such as propane tanks and paint thinner. san jose firefighters say everyone inside made it out and no one was injured abc 7 news reporter tara campbell is following this developing story. terrifying moments for inside a san jose home depot early saturday evening the building engulfed in flames people trying to find family members employees trying to find each other managers trying to make sure all their employees are out, san jose fire getting multiple. arriving on scene shortly after quickly calling for backup. they reported that they had heavy fire. coming from the front side of

the home depot. they immediately called for a second alarm and that second alarm. turning into a fifth as it stands right now. we have all full accountability for all the employees that worked in the home depot. we have no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters toxic smoke and whipping wins wreaking havoc neighbors. toxicity of the smoke is at a concern at this point. yeah. so what we did is with the assistance of san jose police department as we let all the people in the neighborhood to shelter in place keep their windows closed turn off their air conditioning units, you know, turn off any exterior fans cruise evacuating and adjoining veterinary clinic managing to keep the fire at bay. we have a trailer that's gonna hopefully be able to transport a whole bunch of crates full of dogs and just the dogs and all the cats. just need to be safe. and while crews are starting to

thick black smoke much like san jose no injuries have been reported so far abc 7 news reporter ryan curry tells us firefighters are still at the scene. he spoke to residents who say it could have been much worse. sky 7 flying over this massive cloud of smoke right near the benicia bridge saturday afternoon, benicia fire says flames started on a conveyor belt near a petco silo those flames quickly spread to the pier the fire dropped from the top of that conveyor belt and ultimately caught the pier on fire officials say crews could not get close to the pier because it was carrying hazardous materials boat cruise from san francisco. and adjacent fire departments had to help. fire started at the base of the pier then quickly made its way towards the center four boats were docked at the pier and they relocated them to other areas and others nearby the fire had to get evacuated including this wedding party who had their service moved elsewhere at this point. we're just sending all the

guests to another location. we'll regroup see if we can hold the wedding at apart. this fire is causing concern amongst benicia residents the wood on the pier is covered in creosote a type of wood preservative as the fire burn. that chemical was released into the atmosphere. marilyn bardet is a long time benicia resident and environmental activists. she says benicia it's we're lucky the wind blew the smoke over the water. we know that these fires are toxic fires. these are not you know, when a wharf burns it's creosote. that is a hugely toxic chemical. she says she doesn't want any hazardous materials at the port of benicia, especially with the dry hills nearby. so many people are employed in this area and it the grass. can and then embers as we know from fires travel in benicia ryan curry abc 7 news what an incredible day, you know, we talk about so much the high risk of wildfires because of the weather and spencer. you've been watching the conditions for us and really

it's only april. we should be concerned. you're right about that deon. we've had this strong wind gusty pattern today, and it's going to be with us for a while. that's the main factor in competing against the firefighting effort. so right now we're looking at wind gusts in the higher elevations around the bay area up to 46 miles per hour at knoxville and we'll see trust in other places as we get into tomorrow a red flag warning a high fire dangerous infected until 5 pm for all of solano county where we expect gusts up to 50 miles per hour with dangerously low relative humidity and a wind advisory is in effect until 3 pm tomorrow for all the hills and mountains of the north bay and the east bay gusts in those areas may reach 60 miles per hour. of course, there's a possibility of down to tree limbs and few power outages. fortunately. we're not in a heatwave right now. there's some good news relative to fire concern. rain is on the way and i'll have that in my accuweather forecast a little bit later deon. yeah, boy, do we need it spencer? thanks now like spencer mentioned strong winds and dry brush are the reason there is a

red flag warning tonight for a swath of solano county. the warning went into effect at five this morning, and it doesn't expire until 5pm tomorrow on seasonably warm temperatures have firefighters on high alert. they have been busy. there was a three alarm fire this morning in vallejo near the carquinas bridge that made for some tense moments for one homeowner. only april it gets so hairy here. i'm telling you've got a bag by the door all the time waiting for the the fire to come makes us on pretty high alert for the rest of the summer coming up all all the way into the fall. the chp shut down one lane of i-80 as firefighters work to get the flames under control it burned about 10 acres and the cause is still under investigation. moving on sacramento police doubled their staffing tonight following last weekend's mass shooting that left six people dead and 12 injured among the officers are a member of the department's gang task force

restaurant in san francisco is permanently closing its doors after 97 years in the business alioto's restaurant known for their sicilian seafood and fisherman's wharf was one of city's oldest family-owned restaurants representatives for the restaurant decided to end their 66 year long lease early the restaurant temporarily closed during the covid shutdown in 2020 and did not reopen it all started as a fish stand run by nunzio aliotto back in 1925 it then moved to stall number eight on the wharf the giant

number eight sign on. the facade is a nod to the restaurants history. right now a nine-member task force has been meeting for more than 12 hours to redraw san francisco's supervisorial districts. the process has been deeply controversial chock full of drama and controversy along with some accusations some residents and community leaders have likened the proposals to gerrymandering others. say new district lines. do not keep neighborhoods together. this redistricting plan has drawn enormous interest from the public. ashbury street is not the richmond. our district does not the richmond for me. that's just sounds like gerrymandering in itself. please do not assume. that's residents. not know. it's like to be dirt poor. the task force had hoped to complete a draft of their new map by the end of the meeting. there is an april 15th deadline for new boundaries to be set.

tonight, and we've got some fire concerns or red flag warning for high fire dangers in effect until ipm tomorrow for solano county which will be particularly gusty and dry with relative humidity and dangerously low levels gusts up to about 50 miles per hour at times fire spread very easily under those conditions and the wind is rather widespread by the way, so when did advisories in effect until 3pm torw for all the higher elevations the the hills and the mountains of the north and the east bay where when gus may reach 60 miles per hour in some places possibility of downed trees and power lines or power outages. i should say right now. we're looking at gus will mount diablo is posting just disappeared but a moment ago, it was 59 miles per hour at mount diablo 48 milepower gusts at knoxville all around the area. got 30 mile per hour gusts or higher. here's the view from our exploratorium camera looking back at a portion of the san francisco skyline. it's 55 degrees here. six across the band oakland mountain view 53 57, san jose 50 at santa clara and 43 chile degrees that half moon bay the

viewer in the bouncing camera top the east bay hills looking westward across the bay 51 degrees in santa rosa right now down to 49. a petaluma napa 54 63 in fairfield conquered 54 and 61 at livermore and from our rooftop camera. we present this view looking across the embarcadero. these are our forecast features gusty winds along the coast and over the hills through tomorrow the cooling trend that began today will continue into the upcoming week and we can expect rainy and chilly weather on monday with more rain likely later in the week overnight low temperatures under partly. already skies will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s high tomorrow range from upper 50s at the coast to upper 60s around the bay shoreline to low and mid 70s in the warmest inland locations and as we look at the temperature trend for the next three days after tomorrow monday the coolest day in the forecast period with inland highs barely breaking 60 degrees in the mildest locations. i won't say warm because there won't be any warmth. they're not tuesday. we'll see maybe a two degree increase in temperatures finally

on wednesday temperatures start to moderate. little bit and our forecast animation starting at 5. am monday shows rain coming in early monday, but it'll be ending by about mid to late afternoon. so we don't expect a lot from this but the rain will be beneficial anywhere from about a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch for most of the bay area. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we expect drive. it's still cool conditions on tuesday and wednesday thursday another round of showers. we'll move through the bay area. we don't expect this to be quite so wet a system as the one on monday both of them rank one on the abc 7 storm impact scale. it won't be until next weekend that temperatures start to reach that mild spring-like range again. look at this point. i would take a 0.5 on the storm impact. yeah, we need it. so badly i know. okay. great job, narda and band you guys sound phenomenal. we love you dash. ain't that the truth tv anchor during the week aspiring musician on the weekend abc 7 news.

building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. a sad story tonight out of florida where pittsburgh steelers quarterback duane haskins was killed when he was hit by a dump truck as he was walking across a freeway haskins was part of a group of steelers that had gathered to work out during the offseason. abc news reporter alex pershing with what we know about the investig. pittsburgh steelers quarterback, dwayne haskins died saturday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on a south, florida highway, florida highway patrol confirming the accident saying the 24 year old was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a dump truck, but did not offer an explanation as to why haskins was walking on the highway after a standout 2018 season at ohio state university haskins was selected 15th overall by washington in the 2019 draft. he played two seasons in washington before being released by the team. he then signed with pittsburgh

in january of 2021 to sad day in pittsburgh a young kid with his whole life ahead of him, you know with the promising career it's just sad the young quarterback was in florida training alongside other players as he prepared for his second season with the steelers coach mike tomlin releasing a statement saying i am devastated and at a loss for words adding. he quickly became a part of our steelers. only upon his arrival in pittsburgh. i am truly heartbroken steelers linebacker tj watt on twitter saying the world lost a great person today alex pershey abc news, washington ice skating star and richmond native alyssa liu announced her retirement today at the age of 16 leo became the youngest women's national champion at the age of 13. she made this year's olympic team after she recovered from covid and placed seventh in the beijing games. leo had been considered the future of the sport but has decided to call it quits in an instagram post. she said she has done all of her goals and is moving on with her life.
