>> buig solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> two major fires saturday in the bay area. the flames all but wiped out a wooden and a home depot after a fire erected inside the building. good morning everybody. we have a lot to get to including that fire danger, so let's start with a quick look at the weather. frances: there is still a fire danger in salon obey. a live look outside, starting off with a clear beautiful day as we show you the bay bridge lights. temperatures during the next two days will be in -- the wind will

continue to be strong with a wind effect for the higher elevations until -- get ready for some rain heading our way. it begins during the morning commute and i will tell you how much you can expect in your neighborhood. >> the home depot on blossom hill road near santa teresa boulevard right across from the oakridge mall earned for hours yesterday. we had a sky 7 video catching small explosions coming from the building. firefighters say everyone inside did make it out. tara campbell is following the developing story. tara: terrifying moments for everyone inside a san jose home depot early saturday evening. the building engulfed in flames. >> people trying to find family members and managers trying to make sure all of their employees are out.

tara: san jose fire getting multiple calls, arriving on scene and quickly calling for backup. >> they reported heavy fire coming from the front side of the home depot and they immediately called for a second alarm. tara: that second alarm turning into a fifth alarm. the smoke seen for miles and miles away. >> as it stands right now, we have full accountability for the employees who work at the home depot. no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. tara: toxic smoke and whipping wind wreaking havoc >. >> what we did with the assistance of san jose police department as we lit everyone in the neighborhood shelter-in-place, keep their windows closed and turn off any exterior fans. tara: crews evacuating an adjoining veterinary clinic.

>> we have a trailer that will hopefully be able to transport a whole bunch of crates full of dogs and the dogs and cats need to be safe. tara: while crews are sorting to get this blaze under control, concerns overnight will be any hotspots or flareups. carter nielsen lives nearby and cannot believe how quickly the flames grew. >> i dropped my kid off, drove by and then 15 minutes later when i drove by, the entire building was engulfed. tara: as for the cause of the fire, officials say it is likely a long way out from knowing. >> the home depot is a total loss. the roof has collapsed. it will take some time to get in. liz: hours earlier, a fire erected at the port of the niesha and engulfed most of the docs, sending up thick black smoke. we spoke to residents who say it could have been worse. >> sky 7 flying over this

massive cloud of smoke. flames started on a conveyor belt near a petco silo and those flames quickly splurged -- quickly spread to the peer. >> the fire dropped from the can -- from the conveyor belt. >> officials say crews could not get to the peer because it was casted -- because it was carrying hazardous materials. the fire started at the base of the peer and quickly made its way toward the center. four boats were docked at the peer and quickly relocated to other areas and others nearby the fire had to get evacuated, including this for the -- wedding party who had their service moved elsewhere. >> at this point we are sending all of the guests to another location and seeing if we can hold the wedding at a park. >> this fire causing concern among residents. as this fire burns, the chemical

was released into the atmosphere in this longtime resident and environmental activist says residents were lucky the wind blew the smoke over the water. >> we know these fires are toxic. when a wharf burns, it is a hugely toxic chemical. >> she says she doesn't want any hazardous materials at the port, especially with the dry hills nearby. >> the grass can catch and embers from fires travel. liz: strong wind and dry brush for the reason there is a red flag warning for a swath of solano county. the warning does not expire until 5:00 tonight. unseasonably warm temperatures have firefighters on high alert. there was a three alarm fire yesterday morning in vallejo and that for one homeowner. >> it is only april.

national security advisor pick sullivan for the latest on russia's investigation, -- russia's invasion, the investigation into possible war crimes and the biden administration response. new this morning, pope francis is calling for an easter truce in ukraine to make room for negotiating peace. this morning he celebrated sunday mass before crowds in st. peter's square and that i can city sent -- for the first time since the pandemic began. the pope highlighted the need for leaders to make sacrifices for the good of the people and for weapons to be laid down. the pontiff did not refer directly to the invasion of ukraine but he has repeatedly denounced it and the suffering it has brought to innocent civilians. frances: we have a beautiful shot looking toward downtown san francisco and another clear start to the day with mostly sunny skies and temperatures a little bit cooler that we are still dealing with the wind.

liz: an iconic family restaurant in san francisco is permanently closing its doors after 97 years in business. known for their sicilian seafood on fisherman's wharf, it was one of the oldest family owned restaurants in the city. representatives say they decided to end their yeast early. they had temporarily closed during the pandemic and did not reopen. it started as a fish stand in 1925.

it moved to stall number eight on the wharf. the giant number eight on the facade is a nod to the restaurant's history. a task force met for more than 12 hours to redraw san francisco's supervisory districts. the meeting was chock-full of drama and controversy. the proposals have been likened to gerrymandering. this redistricting plan has drawn in norma's response from the public -- enormous response from the public. >> for me, that just sounds like gerrymandering in itself. >> do not assume that we do not know what it's like to be dirt poor. liz: the task force had hoped to complete a draft by the end of the meeting.

a nearly seven decade old san francisco tradition is back. the thundering beats welcomed people back to the cherry blossom festival in japan town. this annual event has been online the last two years because of covid. the mayor says the effects of the pandemic on japan town have been really tough. >> that has changed. this weekend and next weekend, we will have an opportunity to enjoy japan town like never before. liz: the festival continues today and next weekend and this year's theme is springing forward. the cherry blossoms, we were just in d.c. talking about how beautiful they were. frances: they are beautiful but if you have some allergies, you might want to take whatever it is you need.

after years and years of drought that there must be something we can do to put a lid on evaporation. >> compared to existing solar farms, backers believe there are major economic advantages as well because most of the canals are on publicly owned land and they offer -- intentionally making it easier to distribute the power to the surrounding community. >> this makes sense because we aren't irrigation provider but also the electric utility. we have both functions that this project potentially will benefit on the same canal bank. >> he says this project is believed to be the first of its kind in the country but may not be the last. water in california rarely stays in one place and at this rodrick -- if this program is successful, backers hope it can be duplicate it on water projects up and down the state. -- also studied the canopy concept and he believes the benefits could be scaled up

thank for saving their lives. >> are you guys ok? >> we need help. >> standby, we are getting you. liz: a case of being in the right place at the right time. a rip current pulled the 16-year-olds out to sea. they had been trevon diggs -- treading water for 30 minutes. these fishermen were in the only boat out in the water and they saved the lives of these local teens. if you are like many of us, you have seen a growing number of spam texts across your phone. michael finney shows us what to watch out for. michael: like most of us, john has seen an increase in the number of span text -- spam texts he has been getting. he usually ignores them but this one from a friend asked him to buy $400 worth of google play cards for a local civic group. >> it looked legitimate and

sounded legitimate and is -- it is the kind of thing we would possibly do. michael: his wife was going to safeway anyway, so he asked her to purchase the gift cards. great, the spammer texted. send me clear pictures of each card and a picture of the receipt. >> at that point i went, this is a fake. i'm being scammed. michael: be aware of anyone -- beware of anyone asking you to purchase gift cards, cryptocurrency or to use a payment app. these kinds of transactions are hard to trace and don't offer the legal protections of a credit card. the text john received impersonated a friend but many more pretend to be from a business. the federal trade commission reports that spam texts supposedly from a business have bilked taxpayers out of $5 billion since march 21 of last year. >> we've done reports of the

increase in amazon impersonation scams coming in by text message and other media. michael: the latest scam began more than a week ago and pretends to be from verizon, offering a free gift for paying your bill. at the same time, google searches for the term spam text spiked. >> just in the first day last month, we saw about 5000 complaints in the first hour of those text messages getting sent out. michael: julia porter says scammers are now using caller id spoofing to send you texts from your own number. here are tips both she and the ftc issued to avoid being scammed. be cautious about giving out your phone number. watch for strange looking urls. don't click on them. beware of misspellings. forward spam texts to the ftc

freeway. haskins was part of a group of steelers that had gathered to work out during the off-season. alex presha is here with what we know about the investigation. alex: dwayne haskins died saturday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while working -- walking on a south florida highway. he was pronounced dead at the scene. after a standout 2018 season at ohio state university, haskins was selected 15th overall by washington in the 2019 draft. he played two seasons in washington before being released by the team. . >> a young kid with his whole life ahead of him, with a promising career, it is just sad. alex: the young quarterback was in florida training alongside other quarterbacks. the coach releasing a statement, saying i am devastated and at a
