explosions coming from the building. san jose firefighters say everyone inside meted out when the fire erected and nobody was injured. tara campbell is following the developing story. >> get out. >> terrifying moments for everyone inside a san jose home depot early saturday evening. the building engulfed in flames. >> people trying to find family members, employees trying to find each other. tara: san jose fire getting multiple calls from within the store around 5:30 p.m., arriving on scene shortly after and calling for backup. >> it implied they had heavy fire. they called for a second alarm. tara: that second alarm turning into a fifth alarm, that smoke seen from miles away. >> as it stands right now, we have all the employees that

worked in the home depot. we have no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. tara: toxic smoke wreaking havoc. >> the toxicity of the smoke come is that a concern? >> with the assistance of the san jose police department, we led all the people in the neighborhood to shelter-in-place, turn off air conditioning units and exterior fans. tara: crews evacuating an adjoining veterinary clinic to keep the >> fire at bay. >>we have a fire -- we will transport dogs and cats that need to be safe. tara: while crews are starting to get this under control, concerns will be hotspots, flareups. he could not believe how quickly the flames grew. >> drop my kid off at a friends house and 15 minutes later the

building was engulfed. tara: as for the cause of the fire come officials say it is a long way out from knowing. >> the home depot is pretty much a total loss, so it will take time to get in, if we can. liz: hours earlier, a fire erected -- erupted, sending out thick black smoke. ryan curry spoke to residents, who say it could have been worse. >> sky 7 flying over this massive cloud of smoke. venetia fire says flames started near a petco. >> the fire dropped from the top of the conveyor belt. >> crews could not get close because it was carrying hazardous materials. boat cruise had to help.

the fire made its way toward the center. four boats relocated to other areas and others had to get evacuated. including this wedding party, who had their service moved elsewhere. >> we are sending guests to another location. we will regroup. >> the fire is causing concern among residents. the wood is covered in a type of preservative. that chemical was released into the atmosphere. a longtime resident and activist says residents were lucky the wind blew the smoke over the water. >> we know these fires are toxic fires. when a wharf burns, that is creosote, a toxic chemical. >> she says she does not want any toxic chemicals, especially with the dry hills nearby. >> so many people are employed in this area.

the grass can catch. liz: strong winds and dry brush are the reason there is a red flag warning this morning for solano county. the warning is still in effect and does not expire until 5:00 p.m. tonight. warm temperatures have firefighters on high alert. there was a three alarm fire saturday morning and that made for tense moments for one homeowner. >> only april. it gets so hairy here. i have a bag by the door waiting for fire to come. >> pretty high alert for the rest of the summer coming up. liz: chp shut down one lane of i-80 as firefighters worked to get the flames under control. it burned about 10 acres and the cause is under investigation. sacramento police doubled their staffing following a shooting. among the officers are members

of the task force. the shootout was gang-related and there were at least five gunmen involved. the ukrainian president is thanking several people and organizations for a global fundraising event that raised nearly 11 billion u.s. dollars for ukrainians who had to flee their homes. zelenskyy repeats his call for an embargo on russian oil and gas. karina mitchell reports. >> ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is thanking the organizers of a global pledging event. the effort raised more than $10 million for ukrainians forced to flee their homes. during the address to ukraine, he said he spoke with boris johnson about possible new sanctions on russia. johnson walks through kyiv with

liz: an iconic in san francisco is closing its doors after 97 years in business. the restaurant known for seafood was one of the city's oldest family owned restaurants. representatives from the restaurant decided to long leas. the restaurant temporarily closed during the covid-19 shut down in 2020 and did not reopen. it started as a fish stand in 1925 and then moved to stall number eight on the wharf. the giant number eight sign is a not to the restaurant's history. a nine-member task force met to withdraw -- redraw's salad fork -- california -- redraw california's districts.

miles per hour so fires can spread quickly with the low humidity. wind advisory for the upper elevations with gusts up to 60 miles per hour possible and then, because of the strong wind at the coast, be careful at the beaches with a high surf advisory until 3:00 this afternoon. he could see 18 to 22 foot waves. make it dangerous for swimming or surfing because it will create a strong rip currents. only low to mid 70's for the inla aas. bay, look for mid-60's to upper 60's. really comfortable in san jose and parts of santa rosa. we will see clouds increase overnight into tomorrow morning, where it will be chilly. temperatures in the 40's for almost everybody because of the system headed our way.

5:00 tomorrow morning, we will see rain and then slide south through the peninsula and east bay. by 9:00, and moves toward the south bay and clears to the north bay, so keep that in mind. it is also going to bring snow for folks who have spring break this week. that will make for tough driving conditions tomorrow. here is a look at the seven-day forecast, gusty today, cooler this afternoon. tomorrow, light rain. most rain will fall during the morning, looking dry tuesday and wednesday before our next chance of showers thursday and then we ramp back up to more seasonal and milder temperatures next weekend. liz: taking care of our environment is part of building a better bay area. a new project generates clean energy while possibly revolutionizing a key part of california's water system.

>> they crisscrossed the central valley and drive one of the most productive food producing economies in the world. soon irrigation canals could power thousands of california homes and businesses. >> at the most basic level, we are studying how you expand canals that go from 20 feet to 110 feet and put solar over top of them. >> in other words, turning canals into solar power producers. the project partner designed the panels to act as canopies. once they are in place, the test grades are expected to generate about five megawatts of renewable energy. the ceo believes they might also help protect water from the effects of climate change. >> after looking at the open canals from san francisco to l.a., after years of drought,

there must be something we can do to put a lid on evaporation. >> compared to existing solar farms, backers believe there are economic advantages as well because most of the canals are on publicly owned land. attention making it easy to distribute the water to the surrounding community. >> this makes sense because we are an irrigation provider but also an electric utility. we have both functions that this project will potentially benefit. >> the project is believed to be the first of its kind in the country but may not be the last. water in california rarely stays in one place. if this program is successful, backers hope it can be duplicated. an engineering professor and his

>> two teens swept out to sea have a trio of fishermen to thank for saving their lives. >> are you guys ok? standby. liz: this is a case of being in the right place at the right time. a rip current pulled the 16-year-olds out to see -- sea. the fishermen were staying late to catch more salmon. instead, the crew saved the lives of those teens. if you're like many of us, you have seen a growing number of spam texts. uncle fenney shows us what to watch for. >> like -- michael finney shows us what to watch for. >> he ignores most of them, but this one supposedly from a friend he knew asked him to buy $400 of google play cards for a

local civic groups. >> it looks legitimate. it was the kind of thing we would possibly do. >> his wife was going to safeway, so he asked her to purchase the gift cards. she did. great, the spammer texted. scratch the label on the back of the cards and send me clear pictures of each card and a picture of the receipt. >> at that point, i went, this is fake. >> beware of anyone asking you to purchase gift cards, cryptocurrency, or to use a payment app. these kinds of transactions are hard to trace and do not offer the legal protections of a credit card. the text john received impersonator to a friend, but many more pretend to be from a business. the federal trade commission report spam texts supposedly from a business have bilked taxpayers out of money just

through march 21. here is lois reisman. >> we have done reports on the increase of amazon impersonation scams. >> the latest scam pretends to be from verizon, offering you a free gift for paying your bill. at the same time, google searches for the term spam text spiked. >> in the first day last monday, we saw about 5000 complaints in the first hour of those text messages starting to get sent out. >> the spam filter app says scammers are using caller id spoofing to send you texts from your own number. here are tips issued to avoid being scammed. be cautious about giving out your phone number. watch for strange looking urls. do not click on them. beware of misspellings. forward spam texts to the ftc.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> good morning. thanks for joining us. let's start with another check of the forecast. frances: we are going to be dealing with strong winds today with some wind advisories red flag warning in place for parts of the bay area. you can see the camera bouncing around, so this is at a higher elevation. it is looking gorgeous as we see san francisco in the background. sunrise in about 11 minutes. it will be a slightly cooler afternoon for everyone. we will mainly be dealing with wind and high clouds and get ready for light rain tomorrow morning. i will have the details coming up. liz: a sad story out of florida, where pittsburgh steelers quarterback dwayne haskins was

killed as he was hit by a dump truck as he was walking across a freeway. he was part of a group of steelers who had gathered to work out together during the off-season. >> dwayne haskins died saturday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on a south florida highway. florida highway patrol says the 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene but did not offer an explanation as to why haskins was walking on the hhaskins wash overall by washington in the 2019 draft. played two seasons in washington before being released by the team. he signed with pittsburgh in 2021. >> it is a sad day in pittsburgh. a young kid with a promising career. it is just sad. >> the quarterback was training alongside other players. coach mike tomlin releasing a statement saying, i am

devastated and at a loss for words, adding, he quickly became part of our steelers family upon his arrival in pittsburgh. i am truly heartbroken. a linebacker saying on twitter, the world lost a great person today. liz: an ice-skating star announced her retirement at the age of 16. she became the youngest women's national champion at the age of 13 and made the olympic team after she recovered from covid and placed seventh in the beijing games. she had been considered the future of the sport but says she decided to call it quits. she said she has reached all her goals and is moving on with her life. the first three paying customers arrived at the international space station, greeted by seven professional astronauts. the mission was made possible by the cooperation --
