area moving forward finding solutions. this abc 7 news. soot ash and chard remains all that's left today at a home depot in the south bay and at the port of benicia. both fires started yesterday and each burned for more than 10 hours spewing smoke across the bay area leaving destruction behind with that. we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dionne lim. we do have live team coverage for you providing the latest developments on those fires abc 7 news reporter tara campbell is live for us in south san jose where a shelter in place order was just lifted this afternoon for those living near the fire, but we begin with abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard live in the east bay where flames just ravaged to the port of benicia cornell officials.

say the fire was extinguished at about 12:30 this afternoon a whopping hours after it started. yeah, really incredible deon but yes, that is the good news. the fire is out here at the port but the damage has been done as you can plainly see the fire department says several hundred yards of dock damaged or destroyed here and it could put this deep water port out of commission for a while creating possible economic challenges for the bay area. ferocious flames tore through a pier at the port of benicia sending up thick black smoke the four alarm blaze. an early saturday afternoon near a silo filled with petroleum coke a byproduct of refining fuel it later spread to a long wooden dock topped with concrete putting out the flims nearly impossible that wood is soaked in creosote, which is like a oily product to keep it from rotting, but it's also flammable and it's very difficult to

extinguish, even if we had access to it. it's why fireboats from oakland oakland marin and san francisco were called? fight the fire from the water the dramatic firefight would continue through the night nonprofit san francisco bay keeper shared this drone footage over the fire capturing. what appeared to be an oily residue on the water posing a possible risk to the environment and marine life no amount of petroleum product is an acceptable amount to end up in the water. the fire department says it's working with the coast guard and the forward the department of fish and wildlife to address pollution issues. the dock is used to offload imported cars from asia. it's also used by the valero benicia refinery while damage at the port is still being assessed. benicia's deputy city manager believes. the economic impacts may be felt across the region and could make gas prices even worse if the port is out of commission, and there's a challenge to bringing in crew to that refinery. that will absolutely have an

impact valero certainly supplies a lot of california's gasoline and if they're impacted in being able to process crude that's going to be a challenge for this region it. was old it wasn't the wedding day lisa and jeff brown expected their wedding on saturday was canceled after the venue this historic clock tower was evacuated getting a call right in the middle of getting my hair and makeup done going. oh, we're all evacuated but the wedding party pivoted holding the nutshells. mark downtown and the wedding reception at a funeral home in vallejo wedding anna funeral in the same day, basically and we're back live at the port cargo ships have been relocated to other ports across the bay area as you can see a long boom, which is a colored yellow is now being used to capture any byproducts or chemicals from the fire a cause is still under investigation here and we're live in benicia. i'm cornell bernard abc 7 news still so many questions left to

be answered cornell. thanks now the bay area air quality management district tells abc 7 news that it working with first responders to determine the impact the fire is having on air quality the air district recommends people stay away from the smoke particulates are the main issue the biggest concern for air quality officials is the oil and creosote products that are in the wood. that is burning. well to the south bay now where abc 7 news reporter tara campbell has an update from fire officials about that. huge home depot fire, tara. yeah, dion as you can see behind me at think you can see behind me. yeah, we do have trucks moving through here right now, but as you can see behind me right now, it's a much calmer scene than it was last night here and most of that toxic smoke caused by all those materials in this home depot has cleared officials at one o'clock this afternoon lifting that shelter in place order for nearby neighborhoods saying it's safe to open your windows and start up your air conditioning.

the ruins of a five alarm fire at a san jose home depot firefighters still at work. for more than six hour battles saturday night the fire now mostly under control. we're hot spotting through the structure right now putting out smoldering pieces of the building and the investigation which began yesterday is ongoing officials believe the fire may have started in the lumber section of the store, but say nothing can be concluded the investigation into what started this fire and how it spread so quickly they say we'll take time commercial building of this size with this many people inside it. the fire progressed they want to know why and what happened for sure. people catching the terrifying moments on camera as they escape the inferno everyone getting out safely my hats off to those people who kept track of their loved ones their kids and moved in an orderly way out of the building daniel madero bernal has been working at this home depot for a few years and was on his lunch break when the fire broke out i come back. i see a smoke then that's when i

are shifting gears to the weather now heading live outside you can see there a mild sunny day but changes are coming abc 7 news weather anchor spencer christian has a little bit more on our timing when it comes to the rain and also, the wind is going to die down. it's pretty vigorous right now deon and as a matter of fact, i just had the wind graphic up there and it went away. so let's go to the storm impact scale the approaching storm which will start to move in overnight it in the early morning hours. we'll produce widespread light rain less than two tenths of an inch in most locations. it'll be gusty over the hills and bayes it is right now. we've got gusts up to 58 miles per hour right now at sfo. here's a forecast animation between midnight and about 4 am. we'll see that first wave of rain start to push into northern sonoma county then during the middle of the commute it's going to expand to all areas all parts of the bay area. so we're talking light rain wet slippery pavement for the morning commute, but it'll end up quickly in the afternoon tomorrow. i'll give you a complete look at the forecast in a few minutes. yeah. all right, sounds good spencer. thanks to the east bay now. we're a 15 year old girl died in

a shooting at a house in east oakland our media partner the mercury news reports. the girl was from antioch and was visiting people at house on 68th avenue and foothill boulevard when she was shot around seven last night. resource still investigating the circumstances and say there were other people at the home when the shooting happened so far no word on any arrests. moving now to the pandemic. we're at least 21 states have seen new covid infections climbed 10% or more in the last week doctors say the uptick is fueled by the highly contagious ba2 omicron subariant hospital admissions. those are climbing as well 14 states and washington dc have seen more patients admitted in the last week but an outbreak in president biden's inner circle is not slowing him down. the white house says he still plans to travel more this month including visits to iowa and north carolina this week i'll just ahead. what do you think would happen if police pulled over a

news coming out of the east bay this breaking news, we're chp has just confirmed for us all west lanes of interstate 580 in oakland are shut down as they investigate reports of a shooting on the freeway traffic is being diverted to highway 13 drivers are being asked to avoid that area the chp so far has not said when the road will open. we do have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll bring you more information as we get it you can find it through our abc

7 news app and on our website as well. moving on to a bizarre scene involving san francisco police pull a driverless vehicle earlier this month take a look. it happened in san francisco's richmond district now in this video police officers approach a cruise vehicle before it drove several feet a comment from the driverless car company cruise the vehicle yielded to the nearest safe location for a traffic stop. it's working closely with sfpd on how to interact with the autonomous vehicle. a traffic citation was not issued to the company. three fishermen are being called heroes after saving two teams. swept out by a rip current. this happened thursday in the monterey bay the group of fishermen were returning from a day of fishing when they came across two teen girls far from the beach it all happened by chance after deciding to stay in the water longer to catch a large salmon. thank god we were there.

the buddhist new year. oh, this was such a nice sight to see tie knew your celebrations are back at the buddha nissorn thai temple in fremont after a two year pandemic hiatus. groups of people came out to celebrate songkran which runs from april 13th to 15th. i was so honored to be invited. the festivities the community just so welcoming out there. they invited me to try ty dance. i don't think i did very well, but the effort is what i got to try traditional foods like boat noodles. never had those before and they introduced me to their monks. i have to say spencer the thai people are just so happy and they treat you like family. it was a really wonderful experience. it was like it was in any occasion to celebrate. yeah, welcome occasion these days right? well, let's celebrate the wind as one. bay area right now, we've got mainly sunny skies, but it is really brisk out there with gusts at sfo up to 58 miles per hour right now. it's pretty windy all around the bay area and a little bit cooler than it was at this time

yesterday, and we'll see increasing increasing clouds later today right now. we're looking across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera 58 degrees here at san francisco, but we've got mid 60s at oakland mountain view, san jose and santa clara 54 degrees at half moon bay and as you can see, well it doesn't appear to be too windy at the golden gate right now earlier that flag. is really blowing in the breeze. we've got mainly blue skies over the golden gate. it is 66 degrees of santa rosa petaluma. 61 64 napa the mild spot fairfield at 72 upper 60s right now at concord and livermore and here's a view from emeryville looking westward. you can see the skies the beginning to get a little bit cloudier, but it's still bright out there. these are our forecast features rain arrives in the early morning hours. it'll be a wet and slippery morning commute sunny and chilly tomorrow breezy to gusty at times and we can expect a cool unsettled weather. for the remainder of the week with some more chances of rain the approaching storm though is a storm of light intensity ranking only one on our storm impact scale. we can expect widespread light rain beginning in the early morning hours less than 2/10 of

an an inch of rain likely for most and again, it'll be gusty over the hills and along the coastline. here's our forecast animation. excuse me. starting at midnight. we'll see increasing clouds first and then about 4 am or so. we'll see the first wave of rain arriving in northern sonoma county by about 7 am as the morning commute is getting into high gear. pardon the punch. we'll see no, don't pardon the pun. i like the pun. we'll see rain spreading to all parts of the bay area so expect wet and potentially slippery pavement during the morning commute the storm will start to wind down around noon or so and then we'll basically be out of the bay area by late afternoon rainfall estimates. once again, generally under a tenth of an inch perhaps up to about two tenths of san ramon, maybe in nearly a quarter of an inch at livermore on we go to the sierra where a winter weather advisory will be in effect tomorrow from 5 am to 8pm. we expect only about two to five inches of rain above 4500 feet. and now for the bay area tonight overnight lows mainly mid to our 40s highs tomorrow mid-15s at the coast only mitch upper 60s just about everywhere else.
