we spoke to a man who sold the whole thing unfold. >> the car that got hit had broken windows, multiple bullet holes on both doors. reporter: a witness describing this suv that they say were shot up in the westbound lanes of interstate 580, near macarthur boulevard and oakland, just before 4 p.m. on sunday. jonah friedman says he saw the whole thing with his five-year-old and seven-year-old sons in the backseat. the three were on their way back home from minigolf. he says an -- a shooter open fire on this suv from another one in >> front of them in the fast lane. >>it looked like he had to semiautomatic weapons. i was over in the fast lane. he just completely unloads, it seemed like an entire clip. i remember very clearly seeing shells hitting the ground. reporter: chp then closed the interstate and spent hours both on the highway and on the shoulder looking for evidence.

as for the injuries, scanner traffic from both the fire department and chp said this. >> we have two multiple gunshot wounds. reporter: officers won't say anything more about injuries or the extent of them. neighbors say shootings like this are becoming way too common. >> this is not a good sign. standing in my driveway, about to take off on my motorcycle, the next thing i heard, it was no more than two seconds long. it was like 15, 17 shots that rang out, scattering of bullets. >> hear about it and read about it on the scanners in the news reports. it's another thing to see on sunday afternoon. my boys are going to be ok, i think, but my of -- my older son is shaken reporter: up. reporter:at this point, there have been no arrests made in the chp has not released any kind of vehicle or suspect description. kumasi: new developments this morning with a pair of major fires in the area over the weekend. a fire at the port of phoenicia

helicopter are connected to this fire. they are also still searching for this cause of this huge fire that started saturday at 6:00, 6:00 p.m. this is a home depot that are in. this is located on blossom hill in san jose. investigators say all customers and employees safely escaped the flames. they are praising everyone for their great evacuation. one employee who is on his break told us about when the fire started and described the scene. >> i come back and see the smoke, and i got really worried. when i got to the parking lot, i started seeing the smoke growing. i was sticking, "where is everybody?" amy: it took about six hours for firefighters to get this huge fire under control. they are still watching, still dealing with hotspots this morning. as far as their investigation goes, they are focusing on the lumbar section of the store as a possible point of origin for the fire. they have lifted the

shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. they kept them inside until yesterday afternoon because of air quality concerns. it is still smoky here. they have determined that it is safe for them to go ahead and leave their homes. reporting live in san jose, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: now to the fire the port of phoenicia, finally contained sunday. it could still cause some economic challenges for the bay area this week. officials tells it may have an impact on bay area gas prices. this fire started yesterday -- on saturday filled -- near a cello filled with petroleum coke. it took a full day to get that under control. something like oil residue appeared on the water during the fire. the fire department says it is working with the u.s. coast guard and california department of fish and wildlife to address pollution issues. kumasi: the war in ukraine could take another concerning turn this week. we know purses are moving eastward the city of kharkiv. jobina: ukrainian president

kumasi: and east bay man is safe this morning and is all thanks to a massive five-day search and rescue effort. the 85-year-old was reported missing on tuesday. oakland police and the alameda sheriffs county office were finally able to locate him yesterday. the teams pulled out all the stops, searching with drones, dogs, and people from five different counties. he found the man alive in a canyon in the regional park and he was taken to a hospital nearby. he is now recovering. in the south bay, grand opening yesterday for the first vietnamese-american service center in the country is located on center road in san jose. it provides dental, medical, and mental health services and more to the underserved vietnamese population. plans to create the center started over a decade ago. santa clara county has the second-largest enemies community

closer. rain falling over the city, parts of the bay bridge, and some light showers in the east bay as well. on a storm impact skill, it is a level 1 this morning. the biggest issue is certainly slick roadways as the morning commute is underway. here's a look at the golden gate bridge right now. light showers this morning, then this afternoon, the sun comes out but the winds pick up. we are talking gusts well over 30 mph. we will show you those hour-by-hour and time the exit of this rain, coming up in about nine minutes. reggie: thank you. the developing news and san jose, the cause of this huge fire destroying this home depot is still under investigation this money. it is so hot, you can actually see it from outer space. this home depot is on blossom hill road, close to santa teresa boulevard. amy hollyfield is live with all the questions about how this started. amy: when we first arrived here, we immediately noticed it was still very smoky in the area.

now, we have a vantage point and can see why. look at this view from sky 7. there are still hotspots smoldering in there. even though this fire started saturday night, there are still some flames in there. that is throwing off smoke in the area. firefighters are still here on the scene more than 36 hours after this fire started. investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire. they are focusing on whether it started in the lumbar section of the store. they are also looking into whether two fires that burned nearby are connected to this one. a sheriff's department team in a helicopter spotted two other fires in the area and called them in. another issue they are getting questions about is whether the store sprinkler system was working and if it kicked on during the fire. >> i don't have any indication that this burglar's in this building did not function, but that will certainly be addressed as part of the investigation. amy: this home depot on blossom hill road in san jose went up in

flames at 6:00 saturday night and it took firefighters until about midnight before they declared it under control. still, watching it this morning. everyone got out safely. here is that you again from skyview seven, just a shady and already this scene. firefighters were very impressed and so relieved that all customers and employees safely escape this one. now, they just have to get in there and find out the fire's cause. as you can see from that view, it is difficult to get in there with fire stop popping up in spots here at this scene. reporting live in san jose, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: developing news in solano county, where a fire wrote out a part of any ship. it could have an effect on bay area gas prices. the fire started near a silo of petroleum coke, which is a byproduct of refining fuel. it took nearly 24 hours to get it under control. the dock is used primarily to

offload imported cars from asia. it is also used by the valero venetia refinery. >> if the port is out of commission and there is a challenge to bringing in crude to that refinery, it will absolutely have an impact. valero certainly supplies a lot of california's gas and if they are impacted in being able to process crude, that we a challenge for this region. reggie: there were shared drone footage over the fire, showing oily residue over the water. the fire department says it is working with u.s. coast guard and california department of fish and wildlife to do -- to address pollution issues. kumasi: the chp is investigating yet another shooting on a bay area freeway. witnesses are saying gunshots rang out on westbound interstate 580 near mills college. abc 7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is in the newsroom with those who saw the whole thing. gloria: one witness says he saw the whole thing while his young sons were in the backseat. he says they were on their way

know, i heard no more than two seconds long. it was about 17, 15 shots that rang out. just a scattering of bullets. gloria: traffic was diverted during the investigation. this morning, we'll working to learn more about what happened and who police are looking for, so we will keep you updated on that. reggie: thank you, gloria. happening today, new cracked on ghost guns by the federal government. jobina, the regulation is the first we've seen in 50 years. jobina: the definition of firearm would be expanded to include unfinished gun parts. it would essentially ban the sales of the kits used to build ghost guns, which don't have serial numbers. president biden is set to make this announcement in the rose garden later today. ghost guns have become a growing problem for law enforcement agencies trying to solve crimes. in philadelphia, police seized 571 ghost guns last year, compared to just 13 and 2018. in santa clara county, 293 ghost

guns were recovered last year, compared to four in 2015. president biden promised action on gun violence in his state of the union address. this latest move comes after 10 states, including california, recently announced their own plans to ban or restrict ghost guns. kumasi: thank you. elon musk will not be joining twitter's board after all. the twitter ceo made that announcement last night, saying that elana made that decision saturday morning, justus's appointment to the board was set to become official. he will keep his 9% stake in the company. just hours before, he announced another idea to shake things up here he posted a poll on his twitter page to ask if san francisco headquarters should be converted to a homeless shelter. nearly 2 million people voted on this. nearly 91% said yes. reggie: focus on economy is abc 7's commitment to build a better bay area.

87% occupancy in march. that is the highest we have seen since the pandemic. pre-pandemic, san francisco a second to new york in terms of hotel occupancy. now, it is ranked last out of the nation's top 25 markets. almost 50% of the people working in hotels have not been asked to return to their jobs full-time. reggie: -- kumasi: to rush-hour on bay bridges. as you can see, the bay bridge toll plaza. those skinny toll lanes, they will soon be a thing of the past. it is a major change coming to the commute. jobina: there is.
