freefall formation world record, and their special airborne "gma" shoutout. good morning, america, on this monday morning. that was impressive, the "gma" from the sky diving. very impressive. >> how did they do that? >> scottie scheffler impressive too. >> very impressive at the masters yesterday. congratulations to him. >> congratulations. michael, in just a few moments, we're going to hear your conversation from dr. jha just minutes into his first day on the job as the white house response coordinator. first, the latest on the war in ukraine. russian troops are amassing on the eastern part of the country. a major new offensive appears to be on the horizon. foreign correspondent james longman is on the scene. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. i'm at a school just outside of kyiv, which is being used as a base by russian troops, and you can see it is almost completely destroyed, but i do want to show you something here, because we

have been warned again and again about the possibility of mines and traps left behind by russian forces. well, take a look here. you might be able to make out this string which is leading right up onto the handle of the front door. now, we have no real way of knowing, but it might be that that string is attached possibly to a grenade, some other kind of explosive, which is hanging on that handle, and as soon as you pull that string, it could come out, and the explosive goes off. now this is a real danger. there are dangers like this across this part of ukraine, and we do know that russian troops are amassing in the east of this country. the city of kharkiv has now been hit by russians 66 times in the last 24 hours. this morning, battle lines shifting as russian forces amass in the east. these new satellite images show an eight-mile-long russian military convoy heading towards the northeastern city of kharkiv. ukraine's second largest city has already faced weeks of shelling. neighborhoods completely destroyed.

east of kyiv, this general gave us an exclusive look of where his soldiers beat back russian troops. [ speaking foreign language ] right here on this spot, he says, from that farm, our boys used those javelins to do what you now see behind me. he tells us two russian tank columns were headed down this road when his troops ambushed them. stopping the russian advance. you're very proud of your victory here? >> yes. >> but are you as confident about the war that's starting in the east? [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: ukraine needs more modern weapons, he says, but we need anti-tank weapons, anti-aik phase. family member she has left.only- you come across all kinds of emotions. this man is furious. this woman is quite clearly beside herself. there's also happiness at liberation. thige of joy now that they've seen ukrainian forces here. this country is still reeling from the shocking russian attack on a train station in the

eastern city of kramatorsk. it left 57 people dead, including at least 5 children. thousands have been using the station trying to flee east ahead of russia's next attack. ukrainian president zelenskyy says his country will be ready saying, they can even use more missiles against us, even more aerial bombs, but we're preparing for all that action. we will respond. over the weekend, in a show of solidarity, british prime minister boris johnson arrived in ukraine. he toured the streets of kyiv with president zelenskyy. and as russia now shifts its strategy, putin has a named a new commander in ukraine, general alexander dvornikov. he previously led russian forces in syria, a campaign where human rights investigators say russian forces deliberately targeted civilian populations and destroyed cities. we're at the back of the school now here, and you can see the level of devastation. this was a school bus completely destroyed, and we're getting an idea of what russian troops were doing while they were here, while they were occupying this country, and a lot of it was looting. a lot of it was stealing valuable items that they could identify. now, these are computer monitors

that have been taken out of the building. they didn't quite get all of them. you can see washing machines and other items. they were just trying to steal as much as they could from buildings like these which they identified as being modern and full of valuable items. now, as you can see, there's a lot of rebuilding to do now in this part of the country, but over in the east, there is reinforcement. this country is preparing for the second phase of this war. george? >> so much devastation there. okay, thanks, james. let's bring in our military analyst, retired colonel steve ganyard. what do you make of this focus of russian forces in the east? >> remember early on in the war that the focus was on kharkiv. putin wanted to encircle the capital to bring down the government to bring in its own puppet government. that plan has failed. so time for plan b. that involves the shifting of troops over to the east to the donbas region. what we saw on that big convoy james was showing, that's the shifting of the troops over to

the east. think about this plan b, in terms of both strategic and political geography. this is the donbas. this is what putin said he was going to liberate. he has to take this to he can go back to the russian people and say, i won, but if you think about strategic geography, you can see he's essentially building a land bridge between russia all the way over here to crimea. if he takes this, he controls the access to the black sea, and he threatens the whole river. this is a strategic geography, he needs, but this is what he needs to take back to the russian people. >> one sign perhaps that the russians know they lost the first phase of this war, they've put a new general in charge. >> yeah. he's a new general, but he's also been in charge of this area around the donbas, and so far we haven't seen anything impressive out of him. i don't think the change in generalship is going to fix the systemic problems of the russian military that we've seen up to this point. >> steve ganyard, thanks very much. amy? now to that high-stakes

presidential election in france. after sunday's vote, emanuel macron heading into a runoff with marine le pen, known for her close ties to vladimir putin, and the polls show the race is very close. lama hasan is tracking this from london for us this morning. good morning, lama. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, amy. it was a dramatic night in french politics. the french president emanuel macron will battle it out with his main rival, the far-right candidate marie la pen in the runoff elections in two weeks' time. it's a rematch of the 2017 elections, but this time it is different. it is a fiercely contested race. le pen, who is anti-immigration, anti-islam, and anti-nato, but she is pro-vladimir putin and once admired donald trump. her numbers have been rising. she's been closing in on macron. now she has suffered her image focusing her campaign on what matters the most to french people, the cost of living. france, of course, is the u.s.' oldest ally, a strong nato partner and her election could upset the balance of power in europe and destabilize the western alliance.

that has opposed putin's war. macron is still the favorite to win, rising in the polls as a wartime president. he's been boosted by his diplomatic efforts with putin. but his critics have accused him of spending too much time focusing on the crisis in ukraine and not enough time on his campaign at home. both candidates are back on the campaign trail today, and as president macron said, the next two weeks will be decisive. michael? >> all right, thank you, lama. now to that growing washington covid outbreak. more people who attended that gridiron dinner last week now testing positive for the virus. case rates are ticking up across the nation. chief white house correspondent cecilia vega has the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. that elite dinner was attended by a who's who of washington politicians and journalists. it turns out it's looking like a superspreader event in town. at least 72 positive cases so far potentially linked to that dinner. we're now talking about new york city mayor eric adams and members of the president's cabinet, the ag secretary, the commerce secretary, even the

attorney general, but look at this. it's not just that dinner. at least 23 lawmakers and administration officials testing positive just in the last week alone. so far the good news, it seems most if not all are having mild symptoms, most if not all are vaccinated. some have close proximity to the president including as you can see there, speaker nancy pelosi, the white house says they are taking precautions to keep the president safe. he was last tested on friday, but they're now acknowledging it is a possibility that president biden could get infected. >> thank you, cecelia. we're joined now by the new white house coronavirus response coordinator dr. ashish jha. dr. jha, thanks for joining us this morning. >> thanks for having me here. >> there are now 70 cases linked to that washington gridiron dinner which looked like a superspreader event. everyone who attended had to be vaccinated. is that not enough anymore? >> you know, michael, what it reminds us is the pandemic isn't

over, right, we're still going to see cases of this virus spreading, and we have to continue to be vigilant and continue to be careful, but as long as people are vaccinated and boosted, we now have a lot of treatments available. put that together, and the good news is no one out of that so far has gotten particularly sick. that's what we have to be tracking. making sure that when there are outbreaks we can take care of people and make sure no one ends up in the hospital or worse. >> and house speaker nancy pelosi who spent time with president biden and vice president harris last week, she tested positive on thursday, and later that day the vice president presided over the senate without a mask, and then, we saw a maskless biden meet with judge jackson. was that risky, and what are the latest cdc guidance on when you need to wear a mask? >> so there are very strict protocols here at the white house and elsewhere obviously for senior officials, including anybody who's had a known exposure as defined by the cdc, following cdc guidelines. so i think that is clearly being followed, and i think that's

imrtt,ig?i thinit important foro continue to be vigilant, official exposure to follow the response that the cdc has required. >> we know the omicron variant, in europe. it's now the dominant variant in the u.s. as well. we follow europe by two weeks, and infections are on the rise in 21 states. how concerned are you and what do vaccinated people need to know about it? >> yeah, it's a great question. a couple of things, and first of all, as you said, we have tended to follow europe by a few weeks. we are seeing cases rise. we're going to see cases rise and fall. that's part of the thing. what we know is for ba.2, the vaccines are working really well, particularly if you are boosted. so if you are boosted, you're going to -- there are still some breakthroughs, but people will do very well. that's the number one thing people need to be doing is making sure they're vaccinated and boosted. >> and speaking of being boosted, the cdc authorized a second booster for older people, but nearly a third of people

over 65 haven't had their first booster. you're now the new white house coronavirus czar. so what are you going to do to make sure that those who are most vulnerable get boosted? >> yeah, it's a great question. it is absolutely essential that every adult who's more than five months out get that booster. i mean, i think that is just critical, and as you pointed out, michael, it's particularly important for older americans, people who are at higher risk. so i think we need to look carefully at what's holding that back, and we need to redouble our efforts. that's how we're going to save lives. that's how we're going to prevent hospitalizations and deaths, is making sure that older, more vulnerable people absolutely get their booster. >> we definitely want to save lives. dr. jha, thank you so much for joining us this morning and congratulations on your new job. >> thank you so much. >> all right, thank you. george? >> thank you, michael. now to that scary scene in times square last night. a loud explosion went off sparking fears and people running up. see it there. firefighters and police swarm the area, and the energy company says a manhole explosion is to blame.

janai norman has the story. good morning, janai. >> reporter: george, good morning. despite knowing it was a manhole explosion we were talking earlier about how scary this had to be. it was a pretty nice day out, lots of people out, and times square on a weekend is packed with people, and then panic. a loud bang sending crowds scrambling, unsure of what they were running from, but this livestream video shows a bird's eye view of the moment where you see hundreds of terrified people, including many with children, not sticking around to find out what happened after that massive bang and then smoke. turns out this was a manhole explosion. it happened just before 7:00 yesterday evening just a block from our studios over on 43rd street. telling abc news in a statement, a manhole exploded due to a cable failure, and a second manhole was smoking. firefighters also found elevated carbon monoxide levels in buildings nearby. thankfully no reports of injuries or property damage, but despite that, for the people who are here visiting times

square, this had to be absolutely terrifying. and george, as you told us not just for the people out here in the streets, but even some in buildings nearby. >> thank you, janai. ali was actually at a show last night. at the end of the show, they heard the explosion go off. the entire theater was in panic. they swarmed the lobbies. people pinned against the walls. they thought there was a shooter outside at the same time. it's a real sign of the times. it was a manhole explosion, but it created such panic. >> i would think so with that kind of noise. we're going to turn now to something i'm guessing the two of you were glued to this weekend. it's called the masters. 25-year-old american scottie scheffler, the top ranked player in the world won his first major tournament. and t.j., who i'm also sure was glued to the television screen, joins us now with the highlights and tiger's big return. >> yes, look, we're used to sports and in all sports somebody wins a championship and we see them break down crying with emotion. scottie scheffler did that out of order. he cried like a baby in the morning and then went out and played. he was so overwhelmed by the moment and didn't want to mess

up, wondered if he was ready. he cried, still went out, won the masters, but another victory of sorts for the guy who finished in 47th place, tiger woods. a new name etched in golf history. >> scheffler, outshines them all. >> reporter: american scottie scheffler won his first major, the masters on sunday, coronated with that coveted green jacket. >> if you are going to choose a golf tournament to win, this would be the tournament i would want to win. >> reporter: completing the tournament at ten under par, the 25-year-old texas native led all weekend and held off rory mcilroy in the final stages. he had to overcome some nerves, a four-putt on the 18th before sealing the deal to thunderous applause. the new champion shared the moment with a big hug and kiss with his wife, meredith. arguably another winner coming out of the weekend, tiger woods, finishing the week in his traditional sunday red and getting a massive standing ovation on the 18th. a year ago watching the masters

from his hospital bed, but over the weekend, defying the odds, completing his first tournament just a year after a devastating car crash that almost cost him his leg. >> i don't think people really understand, you know. the people who are close to me understand. they know what it takes to do this out here at this level. >> reporter: after a great start, the five-time masters champion finished the tournament far down the leaderboard, even putting up his worst ever sunday score at the masters, a six over. at times, woods was in obvious pain, wincing on occasion, limping, even using his golf club as a makeshift cane. >> i don't quite have the endurance that i would like to have had, but as of a few weeks ago, i didn't even know if i was going to play in this event. >> reporter: the huge crowds clamored all weekend for a glimpse at the golf legend, but fans won't have to wait long to see him back in action, announcing he'll play at the open in july. >> it's been a tough road, and one that i'm very thankful to have the opportunity to grind through.

florida training with a few of his teammates. for some reason early saturday morning authorities say he tried walking by the nearby stretch of this highway when he was struck and killed and this morning we still don't know why. >> haskins takes off. >> reporter: this morning, the sports world in mourning. 24-year-old pittsburgh steelers quarterback dwayne haskins' life cut tragically short. >> vehicle versus pedestrian. 59 5 westbound. >> reporter: florida highway patrol says haskins was killed saturday morning trying to cross a florida highway when he was hit by an oncoming dump truck. >> not conscious, not breathing at this time. >> reporter: authorities investigating the accident as a traffic homicide saying in an accident report, mr. haskins was walking on a limited access facility for unknown reasons. >> haskins keeps. >> reporter: full of promise, haskins recently signed a deal with the pittsburgh steelers and had the opportunity to compete for a starting job. the maryland native played college ball at ohio state university. setting 28 records for the team, throwing 4,831 yards and 50

in hopes of improving inventory. why is there a shortage? there are a couple of things at play here. inflation, supply chain issues. you may remember there was a massive formula recall, so supply was already down because of that, and some companies have now ramped up production, but it's going to take a few weeks before we really see that shortage. >> what can parents do if they're having a hard time finding formula? >> first, look at different kinds of stores. your grocery store may be out, but your pharmacy may have better stock. you can order directly from the manufacturer. they do seem to have stock and they offer several discounts if you order by subscription. a warning, though, there really isn't a way to stretch formulas. doctors say diluting with extra water is dangerous. it affects the way babies absorb the nutrients. you need the right concentration or you can actually see serious neurological issues, seizures, brain damage, and in some cases, even death, george. >> i didn't know that. okay, eva, thanks very much. michael? >> george, thank you.

now to the story of a remarkable discovery. one man's journey to chile to reconnect with his birth mother after finding out he was stolen shortly after he was born. juju chang has more on how this all unfolded. good morning, juju. >> reporter: good morning, michael. tyler's birth mother says his -- she was told her child died in the maternity ward in chile. it took 38 years for her to uncover the truth. and we were there as tyler traveled from texas back to his birthplace for the first time. it was a bittersweet journey for sure, confronting a sinister history while connecting with a beautiful family he never even knew he had. >> who was tyler graf before all this began? >> just an ordinary 38-year-old american man. i have a wife and kid. i work for the city of houston fire department. i was adopted by a very loving, caring family. i think it was just knowing that my story did start before i was adopted.

so it's kind of like missing the first five minutes of the movie. >> reporter: after becoming a father, tyler began trying to learn about his birth family. suddenly, a call he never expected. >> that must have been the shock of your life. that's when they sat me down and told me who i was, how they know who i am, and what the true backstory really is. >> reporter: tyler had been stolen from his birth mother. she was told he died shortly after childbirth. the practice of coercive adoptions became widespread in chile during the '70s and '80s. thousands of babies taken, trafficked around the world through a complex network that included hospitals, the catholic church, and the chilean government. >> doctors, midwives, social assistants, they were all involved. >> reporter: the american families like tyler's say they had no idea that the baby they had adopted had been stolen.

supervillain from the marvel universe or from when he was just a teenager in "the goonies." now josh brolin is bringing those talents to the television for his new series "outer range." good morning, josh brolin. is this right, it's been 20 years since you've appeared on television? >> it's not possible because i'm only 17 years old, so that's impossible. >> so why now? what was it about the series? >> i don't know. you know, i had been offered a few series in the last few years and, you know, streaming has become a big thing. it's not typical network series like it was last time, and when i stopped doing series, or when i made that decision and it was a very definitive decision, it was 22 episodes, 26 episodes. it had to do with the amount of content that was being put out. you couldn't really focus in any kind of artful way, at least to me and the stuff that i worked on. this was eight episodes over a seven-month period. there was a lot of focus. there was a lot of really great people involved, and i liked the -- i like the, you know, the western genre. it's a great genre to be involved in.

>> tell me about "outer range." what is it about this particular series? >> it's a great hybrid for me. you know, i was very -- when the first couple of books that i read like "brave new world," there was that kind of metaphysical aspect to it, and you take a genre i love, and i haven't been involved with for a few years -- "true grit" was the last western that i did. i was looking for a western, and then you take the kind of sci-fi element of it, you know, or supernatural element, and then you turn the, you know, the western on its head, and then you have something that i think is sustainable for quite a long time. >> yeah, and for those who don't know, and i was actually reading up on this, you actually grew up on a legit ranch, correct? >> i did. i actually -- it sounds romantic now, but when you are doing it, you know, 65 horses you're feeding at 5:00 every morning

before you go to school, there's nothing fun about it. it's only in hindsight where you say, i grew up on a ranch and i rode horses and it's all great. i think it definitely created a good work ethic. my mother was very adamant about keeping us grounded and i think it worked at least a little bit. >> i love that. let's take a look at you in action in "outer range." >> i ask that you forgive us, i guess. there is a big distance between you and us, a gap, a void. there is a great void and i'm asking you to fill that void. i'm asking you to fill that void. i'm asking you to come down here and explain yourself because this world of yours isn't quite adding up and i hate you for it. i really do. >> that's intense. tell me about your character, royal abbott in this series. >> royal abbott runs the ranch. he's married. he has a family. it's all about the integrity of

keeping the family together, keeping the family of the land. i think it's an ecologically sound thing, and his family is being hit by this unknown thing that the foundation isn't as solid as you once thought and everything starts to kind of crumble, and it makes for good drama and good behavioral intensities. >> ooh, i love it, and you know what, i was so excited when i learned that your daughter, eden is in one of my favorite series, "yellowstone," also a western. did you talk tips and tricks for doing westerns right? >> i don't know about tips and tricks. one thing happened to me which i'm still humbled by, is i taught her how to rope and she grew up on a ranch also right down the street from where i grew up, a couple of miles down the street and i started roping for this.

this is a role you pretty much have been waiting to play your entire life because at the age of 3, you had a "funny girl"-themed birthday party. >> i did. >> we have a picture of it. how incredible is that? what would you tell that little girl now 25 years later? >> it's happening. i don't know. it kind of feels like it's the only thing to say. it really is truly the definition of, like, your dream coming true. i think you have your first memories at, like, 3 years old. so i don't really remember a time when i didn't know this musical, and it wasn't sort of like in my bones and i asked my mom for a "funny girl" theme party. i thought it was like "the little mermaid" or elmo where you could go to party city and buy balloons. i didn't understand, and she was, like, i don't really know how to pull that off, but she did. >> she did. >> she really did, and none of the kids understood it, but i think the parents got a little laugh. >> what was it about barbra streisand? >> i think even as a toddler, is this woman that was -- the role of fannie bryce is this woman who is just unapologetic in her pursuit of, like -- she really

believes in herself, and there's just this energy that comes off of barbra's portrayal of fannie in the movie, where she's, like, i am the greatest and i can do this, and please give me a shot, and she's just -- she really believes in herself, and i think that's really infectious. >> if she comes to see it, do you want to know if she's in the audience? >> if she lands in the state of new york and anyone tells me, i will never forgive them. do not tell me if she's even planning a trip, even thinking of a trip. i cannot know because, you know, i'm literally shaking right now at the idea, but it's -- i don't even want to know that anyone is there honestly. when you come, i don't want to know. i just -- it's just a show like any other show, and we do it for everyone out there, but i get nervous when i know people are there especially. >> i'm curious, because you grew up watching it and idolizing barbra streisand, and did you have to memorize the lines, number one, and number two, how have you -- have you wanted to make it your own?

>> i knew from the beginning the second i got the audition that it was my job to approach this like it was brand new. that clip you played at the beginning of the segment is the first time i've seen the film in, like, seven or eight years. i say it's kind of like denying yourself your favorite cookie. i know it's there, but i can't eat it. i can't watch it. you know what i mean? i had to approach it like this was a brand-new script, and harvey firestein, the legend, has done a lot of the work. the musical is quite different from the film, and it hasn't been on stage in 58 years. so it really is kind of almost like doing a brand-new piece which is really -- it's like known and new which is a beautiful combination i think. >> and i understand you took zoom clown lessons? >> i didn't know that was a thing. >> please explain. >> you're welcome to join next time, michael. well, fannie bryce, most people don't even know she was a real person. she was a remarkable clown.

she had these characters that were world famous both on the radio and her portrayal of them physically. she was like this really remarkable clown, like, true clown, and so the director michael mayer was, like, do you want to take some clowning lessons? i was, like, great. then omicron hit and so we had to do it all over zoom but it gets you out of your head and into your body and super free. it's really fun, and it's very kind of nerve-racking even on zoom. it's really fun and it really helped. >> you come from an entertainment family. your brother, jonah hill of course, the great actor that he is. i'm just curious around the house, were you putting on shows? was it constant laughter? what was it like growing up? >> jonah, i only got to meet him when he was 10 because we're ten years apart. i can imagine his whole life was he was always the funniest person in the room except for our mom who is the funniest person in the room, sharon.

our house was just, like, the two of them are the funny ones, but i was the one who was, like, do you want to hear me sing? i'm, like, this big. so i was doing, like, you know, "funny girl" and "fiddler on the roof" and that type of stuff while my brother and mom were making everyone laugh. >> michael met jonah at a restaurant back in l.a. and jonah challenged him the minute they met and i hear he owes his confidence to you. >> yeah. he's the only one, like, we're true best friends in addition to being siblings, and he always says that i had a confidence from a young age that he could never really find and we talk i mean heart to heart all the time. we're brother and sister, but he -- we really believe in each other, and i -- and i like to think that, you know, he makes me more confident and i make him more confident too. >> i tell you what, though, you make us happy. >> thank you. you make me happy. >> it's been a pleasure talking to you. >> thank you.
