thank you for joining us. i am dan ashley. ama: and i am, dates. j.r. stone has a look at the things that the storm stirred up. j.r.: i just spoke with pgd and as of 9:00, nearly 5000 people are without electricity, winds still a big problem. downed trees and sierra snow from an april storm system that packed the punch. we start in palo alto where this massive tree came down on several cars. >> i heard a huge crash. j.r.: carrie's suv was smashed the family next to it was inside their car but escaped unharmed as did everyone else nearby. across the bay in martinez, another tree. the wind from the storm system always -- also felt in the sierra. >> the winds were amazing last

night. 115 recorded winds across the ridge stops. we had just thought out the summer furniture, and it crashed right inside like a pinball machine, moving around. j.r.: with those winds came snow at lake levels and how elevations, something that state climatologist michael anderson says is good news. >> this one system looks like a place that will outperform for april, may, and june of last year. j.r.: while the snow here helps, we are still well below our needs. >> we have more moisture on the landscape year. shortens the length of the dry season. j.r.: unfortunately not everyone on the roadways were prepared for snowy conditions in april. this was when most locals were clearing forth the space in case of a wildfire.

>> we had ripped 17 bags of pine needles out of our yard and now it is winter again. >> having some fun there, but pge says the highest outage area right now is in the south bay and peninsula. over 2000 customers without power this evening. moving along, meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking more on when the winds will pick up. sandhya: they are not nearly as fierce as they were earlier but they are still blowing gusty. those winds at the lower elevations, 29 oakland. they are beginning to come down. overnight they will drop off. it is a shaky view from our east bay camera. look at oakland airport, 54 mile per hour wind gusts. as we head towards tomorrow

morning, gusty along the coast line, but not as strong as what we experienced today. the winds will ramp up at 2:00 in the afternoon but not as strong as what we experienced today. in the sierra, the snow as you saw from jr's report, and in the bay area, we saw much-needed form of moisture in showers. i will take a closer look at that in my accurate's -- my accurate forecast. ama: the weather on demand section of the abc 7 bay area for the streaming app. dan: moving on to developing news in the war in ukraine. the pentagon confirms tonight that russian troops are on the move. ukraine's president says that troops retreating from the north left thousands of minds that he considers -- mines that he

he came here to work. >> protesters accused the comedian of indirectly supporting the war. in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. ama: cases are on the rise across the nation. six bay area counties are reporting rising transmissions in their counties. starting today california department of public health says it will increase vaccination events for children ages five and older. indoor masking returns to philadelphia, the first city to reinstate indoor masking in public areas. dan: president biden has announced heightened regulations against so-called ghost guns. those come as cities in the bay area are seeing rising crime because of those ghost guns.

they require background checks and serial numbers on ghost gun kits. they also call for businesses that purchase ghost guns for resale to create a serial number before those secondhand weapons are sold again. the san jose mayor and the oakland mayor were among the anti-gun violence advocates at the white house today. >> we are seeing cities throughout california trying to jump in with their own regulations. that wouldn't be necessary once this figure -- federal regulation takes control. dan: -- released a statement on youtube saying that this is a tremendous step and oakland police recovered 3000 ghost guns last year. ama: where learning a more about two women who died in a crash in san jose. they have started a gofundme campaign to help with funeral expenses.

the family says they recently migrated to the u.s. to work towards their american dream. police continue to search for a driver following the hit and run on april 7. investigators are looking for that vehicle you just saw. dan: the aclu has filed a complaint with the state department of justice, claiming the closure of several public schools is discriminatory. the aclu says more than half of those students are african-american at four of the schools slated to close while black children make up only a fifth of students across the district. in response, the oakland school district said that the schools were chosen on several factors. pg&e avoids criminal charges but will pay millions for two of california's major wildfires.

firefighters continue to monitor a home depot's door -- home

depot store engulfed by flames. video from saturday shows a huge plume of smoke, debris falling as far as a mile away. neighbors living close to the devastation are still in disbelief. >> i don't want to see it. that was a place where i could keep control of time. ama: nearby homeowners stayed in a hotel for two days. no word on what caused the fire. the fire burned dangerously close to a veterinary hospital. flames forced a mad -- to evacuate the animals -- a mad dash to evacuate the animals. >> this massive four alarm fire tore through home depot. the cameras captured what it took to rescue the pets from wagley's next door.

this is a nine-month-old named r.g.. this was the first trial run for overnight boarding. dodgson found herself rushing back with smoke billowing from the neighboring building. she learned all animals had been evacuated. >> i was more than relieved to hear that all the dogs were put into vans. employee cars, cop cars, they talked them into carsot reunited with their dogs. we connected with the owner of eight-year-old kiki. they were heading back into the city, spotting the smoke miles away. >> my wife said that the home depot was up in flames, and that is near where wagley's was at so we booked it there. >> kiki was taken to campbells

they are working closely with federal agencies to assess port infrastructure. ama: pge agreed to a settlement for the kincade fire in sonoma and the dixie fire in plumas. leslie brinkley delved into the settlement. reporter: these people spent a year bringing pg&e to justice, and i believe that is what we did here. reporter: the sonoma county district attorney made the announcement that they made a settlement with pg&e to resolve the criminal charges of the kincade fire, one that began with a pg&e transmission line. the fire burned for 15 days, destroying 77,000 acres and hundreds of homes and structures. six firefighters were seriously injured. the sonoma county da said the most significant element to the settlement is pg&e agrand there.

>> it is significant. it is $55 million going into these communities. reporter: that includes millions to expand the college fire technology program and requiring pg&e to hire at least 80 new wildfire safety employees. >> they are working on system inspections. th're going to bring local expertise here to the critical fire safety work we are doing. reporter: some criticized the settlement for not going further. >> is a look at it as doing the best we could under those circumstances. i'm just a prosecutor for sonoma county. if i had a magic wand, maybe p jandy would not exist anymore -- pg andy -- pg&e would not exist anymore. reporter: the d.a. also said
