another wave of shootings and killings. it started last wednesday. where within a period of about 24 hours three people lost their lives, but it then spilled over into the weekend a 15 year old girl died in a shooting on east oakland in a home there then someone opened fire on an suv on westbound. state 580 near mills college two people were injured in that shooting and today a visibly angry and frustrated oakland police chief discussed the recent shootings in his city abc 7 news reporter leslie, brinkley. was there and has the story? the gun violence is unrelenting. oakland's police chief showed this video from april 8th at hillside and richey street. the number of firearms are officers are coming across every day. is unbelievable. we've already recovered 400 firearms in 2022. that's a 30% increase compared to this same time last year, so

it's not getting better. it is getting worse. we are seeing people have more access to these weapons and willing to use them in our community in just the last week a homicide and robbery by lake merritt another victim found murdered in a vehicle an on-duty security guard at one of oakland's tough. dad's homeless encampments shot and killed and a 15 year old girl. kamyla brown gunned down the 34th person to lose her life in oakland so far this year according to the oakland police officers association the city ranks last among california cities for safety. monday oakland mayor libby schaaf met with president biden to discuss new regulations to track ghost guns. this has become a revolving door. that our officers are working hard every day to make this city safe. to only find out that the individuals are coming right back on the streets. the next day and sometimes even

sooner. this emboldens people it says to people that there is no accountability. i can commit these crimes and don't have to worry about being prosecuted. that makes our community less safe. the chief says judges have to get tougher and oakland needs more resources. i'm leslie brinkley abc 7 news. developing news nypd investigators have named a person of interest this evening and this morning's brooklyn subway attack abc 7 news. anchor carina nova joins us of what they're saying now about the manhunt karina. well, it's been 12 hours since that shooting happened an authorities are still looking for the suspect. they do have a person of interest and are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest. here's a picture of who police are looking for the person of interest in that shooting is frank r james. at a news conference in new york less than an hour ago the mayor of new york city promised police

will find this attacker. individual responsible for today's attack. we will capture you and prosecute him to the full extent of the lord. and this afternoon authorities found a van, they believe belonged to the subway shooter. you can see it there police say it was rented in philadelphia by that person of interest again 62 year old frank r james. they were able to track that u-haul van after finding a credit card at the scene of the shooting authority. there was people banging into each other. there was smoke everywhere and then there was people lying on the platform. it was hell fine and people just terrified in authorities say the suspect started shooting around 8:30 this morning on the end train in brooklyn he put on a gas mask opened two smoke grenades and fired a gun 33

mechanical issues valero. benicia uses the port refinery to process crude oil into gasoline valero says it's working with the city and federal agencies to assess infrastructure damage. sunnyvale's department of public safety is investigating a child rape case involving a retired teacher. and say they're afraid there could be more victims police arrested anthony james phillips yesterday. he's charged with raping a child in 2009 while he was a teacher at cupertino. school in sunnyvale, the accuser was a student at that middle school at the time investigators say when they questioned phillips he confessed he admitted to having sex with this victim and admitted to many of the details that the victim had shared with us. phillips retired from teaching three years ago, but is currently a volunteer softball and basketball coach at fremont high school investigators suspect. there may be more victims if you believe someone, you know has been a victim you're asked to please call sunnyvale police.

former ufc champion cain velezquez went before judge today. again. this is video from a previous court appearance. now this comes more than a month after he was arrested for attempting to shoot a man suspected of molesting one of his family members abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey has an update now from san jose it was round three in the courtroom today for former ufc champion cain velasquez the first time he appeared. word in more than a month and it was quick as his legal team requested to have his plea hearing today postponed until may 6th as we indicated the judge today. we are going to file another motion asking that he be released velasquez has been held in jail without bail after he was arrested for premeditated attempted murder of a man suspected of molesting a young family member of velasquez. for the first time since his arrest velasquez released a statement. social media today that said in part this story is complex and

tackle the homelessness crisis. he is raising funds to pay for one year of rent. help those transitioning from homelessness abc 7 news reporter loose peña spoke to a single mom who? benefiting from this initiative loose list, that's right. the mayor of richmond said he's not going to wait on the city council any longer instead. he's using funds. he's raced throughout the years as part of the mayor's community fund. he's also asking small business owners to help him raise money to house as many homeless families as possible. one of those families is a single mom and her 13 year old son. she welcomed us into their home today. hi. hi, how you doing? good, so this is your home. yeah, this is my home that word home carries a deep for coreless rollings. she was homeless for six years after being evicted from her home in alameda for falling 200 dollars short on rent three days later the sheriff came up with me and not just my son but me and my all my kids. i have four kids total and

that's how my homelessness started for half a decade cordless tried to find housing, but her income wasn't enough for any landlord to approve her one of her friends. give to her and rv as soon as i was just stuck there. i always homelessness on nobody. month ago that changed when she got the keys to this apartment now every time i leave to go to work and i come back. stick the key in the key in the door, i just get the same feeling just overwhelmed. the group behind helping coreless is the mayor of richmond and the rotary club close to two months ago. they took matters into their own hands and tackled the homeless crisis differently getting

single moms like corliss out of the rv park and pain one year of rent pretty rick from spent a million and a half dollars. of servicing two rv camps. they could have put a hundred people in an apartment for a year for that money. so i partnered up with the rotary club and what we're doing is we're taking people out of these rv camps the your -- says the biggest challenge is getting landlords to agree. we really need landlords who will take a leap of faith. and take a year's rent in advance and agreed to house a previously homeless person as the cordless is rv. she still has it. but now he's thinking about paying it forward when i sell it all my ring at home, but give it to him. it's gonna be hard to pick somebody, but i'moved meeting cordless. she said there are at least 10 families who are waiting at the rv park for a home and this is not a city-run program. this is an initiative from the mayor himself. he even set up a gofundme that

towards mental health resources that are available to them active minds is the national nonprofit who brought the exhibit out for san jose state to host they say that suicide is the second leading cause of death by college students and that many students with anxiety or depression don't seek treatment. i think the stigma regarding mental health is still there and so it is important for us for everyone to be able to you feel comfortable talking about mental health to be able to seek help though experts. say the last two years in the pandemic have brought added challenges suicide among students has been around a lot longer. it's been going on for a very long time. we've had this issue going on and so you know by doing these types of events. we're bringing more awareness to it those who interacted with the exhibits. say the stories shared our tragic, but the message they send is lasting. it's so powerful and seeing it visually really puts it into perspective and it like i think it hits harder than just reading about it. the same silence packing tour is making stops throughout the country and throughout california thursday heads to
