moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. the nation's largest skilled nursing facility now in danger ofhuwn.terosgpliance violations, we know how valuable this facility is. to ensure that it remains open. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm dionne lim today federal officials terminated funding to san francisco's laguna honda hospital abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow explains why it happened and how officials are trying to get the money back. san francisco's laguna honda hospital is a licensed skilled nursing facility that serves approximately 700 patients with complex medical needs many who

are low income now. the hospital was at risk for being shut down after the centers for medicare and services terminated laguna hondas participation in the healthcare safety net program mayor, london breeds at the hospital will continue to receive medicare and medicaid payments over the next 30 days, but can't take on any new patients and expect reimbursement. the announcement was triggered by a requirement that the facility resolved. efficiencies by the end of a six-month period that period began in october when states surveyors outlined and documented deficiencies related to preventing contrabands such as cigarette lighters and drug paraphernalia on campus. we have been well on our way to making things right to improving the conditions in the latest round of surveys this week state surveyors identified new issues with hand hygiene infection prevention and control as well as two missed doses of a medication during the visit what was seen were a number of things that we know can be corrected, san francisco. say because there wasn't enough time to address those deficiencies before the review period ended the medicare

monitoring hotspots and evaluating the damage of this massive fire. it broke out at about 7:15 yesterday here at the taylor farms processing facility abc 7 7 news reporter. zach fuentes is joins us live with the very latest zach. yeah, those evacuation orders in the shelter in place orders were lifted just before one this afternoon. that's nearly 17 hours after this all started now that we're here closer to the building we can show you just some of the damage that has been done here. selena's fire telling us that 85 to 90% of the building is a total loss. not a remind. everyone. taylor farms is a major agricultural company who brings any of the salad kits that we see in our grocery stores. it's also a major employer here now amazingly no one was hurt but the situation overnight could have caused massive devastation. this is the fire that tore through the 225,000 square foot building just after seven wednesday evening making things even more dangerous was a 35,000 gallons of ammonia the facility had and explosive chemical that stephen fire crews to evacuate

the scene. so with that amount of 35,000 pounds of ammonia. that that could have been devastating to this community it we're talking big explosions with major damage throughout the community. not just taylor farms shawn mccluskey owns a business just on the road from the facility. he and his workers were evacuated and some of the first to witness the fire. you can see straight down airport boulevard there and you could see the the flames and the smoke and everything coming. up from taylor farms most of the surrnd are other businesses which were evacuated but residential areas downwind of the fire were told to shelter in place and schools today canceled because of the toxic smoke caused by the ammonia the plant was closed for the season with many workers set to come from yuma arizona on monday. no produce or people were inside but taylor farm as leaders have been in meetings all day to address the thousands of employees impacted. we are working internally bruce taylor has been meeting with all of the vice presidents of the

different divisions to make sure that any people that are you know, something any hardships primarily that the that are in yuma. making their way here. just making sure that we take care of everybody work through the problem. they're also faced with the challenge of the process. thing of the food that eventually comes to our tables we do have other plants in the immediate area. we are working at any option that available to us. to continue our our products to our customers and you know, make sure that we keep everything going now with the imminent threat gone the main question for sean mccluskey and the rest of this community so driven by ag are the jobs the owners have insurance the shareholders have insurance. but we don't have a way to protect people's jobs. they're livelihoods. now the environmental protection agency hazmat cruise fire crews there all still here on the scene and official cause is being investigated with the salinas fire. chief says that early indications show that a welding

project may have sparked a fire inside a wall. but again, that is all still being investigated right now live in salinas zach fuentes abc 7 news. okay zach. thank you today in silicon valley google announced a major project coming to san jose a downtown west will be the newest south bay google campus aimed at utilizing the downtown area abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains how it's going to be a major boost for the economy. google is coming to san jose and it's bringing more than new offices for employees. these are artists renderings of what it will look like in the near future. the tech giant is investing in the city to create a project that benefits the community and revitalizes downtown. i think this is a different path to redevelopment in our city. it's not led by the government. it's really a collaboration of private sector investment the city and support and the entire community the downtown west project looks to bring new life around the sap center with offices restaurants

entertainment centers and more. google will create nearly 6,000 construction jobs to build the project 25,000 jobs will be available when it's completed with training opportunities. so people can fill them and 4,000 homes will be built. and of those affordable with rent restrictions, i think it's an outstanding example for other. what we've really come to recognize particularly through this investment is how bringing a collaboration private sector investment and the community is really going to bring the people here. google has invested a great deal into the plan to bring people into jose today, they announced they are going further. 2022 we are going to be investing another three and a half billion dollars in the state of california. that's growth for our company, but that's also fuel that makes the overall economy grow a big boost for the south bay and beyond that includes expansions for the offices and mountain view new offices in sunnyvale and a new 500,000 grant for two

level radar in san francisco, you will notice mission street right around the sunset district street it is wet heading towards skyline boulevard moraga, emeryville berkeley out towards castro valley crow canyon road. definitely watch out slippery roads in the north bay, san rafael to mill valley sir, francis drake boulevard fairfax, lucas valley area rainfall totals so far try close to an inch there in ukiah, but obviously everyone else less than that 4,500 in santa rosa a hundredth of an inch in san jose. we're still counting. these are just rainfall amounts so far. comfortable right now in the 50s and the 60s not so comfortable mount rose. it is a very windy view it is snowing right now in blue canyon. so in the sierra, nevada, you can see that snow is just coming down pretty good at this hour and we are under they are under a winter weather advisory four to nine inches of wet snow up to 15 inches for the peaks winter

weather advisory above 5,500 feet until 11 pm tonight. a slippery roads and reduced visibility exploratorium cameras, certainly showing you a rainy view here in san francisco and visibility is not so great. it's a level 1 through late tonight scattered showers slippery roads light in terms of accumulation. so here's that next band going through as we head into 8pm 10 pm mainly an e-space south bay santa cruz mountains area and through midnight. we'll continue to see those showers additional accumulations up to maybe 12 13 inch. at best now tonight the chill is going to settle in we do have a variety of freeze warnings and frost advisories from one to nine. am temperatures will range anywhere from the mid-20s to the mid 30s for austin freeze will damage any sensitive plants. so protect them now temperatures in the morning with fog forming mid 30s to upper 40s. certainly, we'll have some cloud cover around as well tomorrow morning and then tomorrow afternoon. it's a milder day upper 50s to
