friday, april 15. kumasi: let's get a check of the forecast withdrew. drew: today, we are dry to finish out the week. we have shown the showers we had yesterday. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza showing you once the sun is up, we find it mixing with clouds. it is a partly cloudy day, dry this afternoon. temperatures in the 50's and the 60's, but rain is back in the forecast tomorrow morning. the storm impact scale, we have brief downpours tomorrow morning. we will go hour-by-hour. kumasi: this morning, california students and parents are living up to a new timeline for a covid 19 vaccine mandate. students will not be required to be vaccinated for another school year. initially, it was said it could be in months.

amy hollyfield joining us live with the change. amy: students now have another year before they will be required to have that covid vaccine to attend classes, to go to school. this is for kids 12-17. the earliest covid vaccine requirement will not go into effect for students in california earlier than july of 2023. originally, the deadline was this july, but state health officials say they postponed the deadline to give everyone more time to successfully implement the vaccine requirement. they say they are waiting for the fda to give final approval for kids. governor newsom had announced back in october that the state would require all students over the age of 12 to be vaccinated from covid, making california the first to put a requirement in place for students. state officials still hope to see kids get vaccinated, saying in a statement that the department of health strongly encourages all eligible californians, including

children, to be vaccinated against covid-19. kevin he 4% of californians between the ages of 12 and 17 -- 24% of californians between the ages of 12 and 17 have been vaccinated. reggie: doctors can detect covid using breath samples, but you cannot use it at home. it does have limits. this comes as covid cases are going up. jobina: the fda issued airman emergency use authorization for this suitcase-sized box that offers rapid results in under three minutes and can administer up to 160 tests a day. it is only for use in doctor's offices, hospitals, and mobile testing sites. it comes as americans prepare to gather over the holiday weekend. new infection rates nationwide have increased by 11% in the last week. earlier this week, the cdc extended the mask mandate on public transit. they gather data on two new versions of the omicron variant. >> very helpful figuring out is

offset wildfire fuel, many thousands of acres are drive from years of drought. reggie: new information on when california kids will need to be vaccinated to stay in school, and it pushed back later than you might have expected. amy hollyfield has the new deadline. amy: this is a big change. now have another year before the covid vaccine will be required for children who are older than 12 and up. it was going to go into effect this july. now, the state has given everyone another year, and they say they want to give everyone more time to get this implemented. they also did it because the fda has not given final approval yet for kids to get that vaccine. now this requirement will be in effect for students in july of 2023. state health officials say they postponed it because it was not ready yet, with the fda not coming in with the final approval yet. evan or newsom had announced back in october that the state

analyzes breath to look for specific chemistry with active viral infection of covid-19. results come back in less than three minutes. the company says the positive result should still be confirmed with a pcr tests. kumasi: the subway shooting in new york city -- a judge ordered the gunman to remain in custody without bail. his attorney says it is too early to jump to conclusions. police are still time to piece together the timeline of the attack. jobina: frank james is facing a terrorism-related charge after police say he opened fire in a crowded subway car tuesday morning. james went for a federal judge in brooklyn. the prosecutors argued he should be held without bail. prosecutors called the attack entirely premeditated and perfectly planned, saying it caused terror among the victims and our entire city. he did not enter a plea. james is being represented by public defenders. >> we caution against a rush to

judgment. yesterday, mr. james saw his photograph on the news. he called crime stoppers to help. he told them where he was. jobina: abc news has learned investigators believe james may have rushed to the attack. they believe he set off his smoke grenades sooner than planned. they say he possibly dropped to one knee to avoid the rising smoke, and open fire from that crouching position. that could explain why the victims were mostly shot in their hands or legs. prosecutors suggested that james had the means to carry out more attacks, and he had ammunition and other gun-related items in a philadelphia storage unit. reggie: mountain view police have launched a hate crime investigation after swastikas were found painted on an elementary school. police say the vandalism happened sometime last weekend. they are looking for anyone with video footage or other information to identify the people responsible. kumasi: this morning, we are

reggie: the man who pleaded guilty to killing a hayward police officer nearly seven years ago will spend 50 years to life in prison. he took a plea deal for

first-degree murder. estrada's shot the sergeant three times as he approached during a predawn traffic stop in july of 2015. before the sentencing, emotional statements were given by those who knew the sergeant, including his girlfriend, his daughter, and the police partner who held him as he died. >> while our hearts are heavy and this is a difficult time, we are hoping this can start to bring a sense of closure for everyone involved. reggie: procedural moves in the pandemic delayed the sentencing until this year. optimism that steph curry will play game one of the playoffs tomorrow night. curry participated in his first five on five scrimmage since suffering a foot injury. draymond green's son helping to rebound. assuming there is no swelling or pain today, curry will be on the court at chase center tomorrow.
