on the holiday weekend. sandhya: let's take a look at live doppler 7. it is a storm approaching fast. in just a matter of hours we will start to notice that the rain is coming down. it is going to be heavy enough to where you you might hear itt 5:00 a.m. it might wake you up. slippery roads. gusty at the coast. the moderate rainfall to heavy rain first thing in the morning will quickly give way to a short break. look at the next seven days. we have multiple opportunities for level one systems. i'll be back to let you know when you'll need your rain gear and how easter is looking. dan: the pandemic also a consideration for many this holiday weekend. cases are edging up once again in california with the state reporting over 7600 today. the positivity rate is also rising. it is 2.1%.

that is an increase of half a percent from last friday. a week ago. hospitalizations have been trending downward. that is encouraging. 1,000 people are hospitalized in california due to covid. dion: around the bay area tonight we found families ready to gather for the holidays. most cautiously excited. reporter: the mask the only real indicator of a pandemic. people packing into san francisco international airport ready to travel this holiday weekend. tell me how you feel to be here at the airport? >> nervous. i haven't been on a plane for the last three years. reporter: while there was some apprehension, the majority of people we spoke with were eager to get going. >> i feel great. i think it is nice to get out after this covid situation. reporter: this family on their way to hawaii. 16-year-old colleen says she is more excited than nervous. >> obviously it is still a

little bit shaky with covid and there is a bunch of fires going around but no, i'm pretty excited. reporter: people here are clearly ready to put the pandemic behind, a doctor at stanford has some advice for everyone this holiday weekend. >> there is high transmission now in the community. we know that based on waste water data. reporter: because of that high transmission rate, prawtion precautionary measures are a must. from masking to testing. >> if everyone does a test, it is unlikely anybody will be infectious and spreading at the gathering. reporter: people are ready to gather. phillip levy is glad his son gets to experience some easter traditions. >> going to take him to an easter egg hunt outdoors, safely distanced.

we're going to get on with our lives. reporter: and marleau contreras is pumped about preparing the holiday meal. >> knew the covid is gone, not completely gone but at least we're being safe. reporter: she says what makes her feel safe is the vaccine. >> everybody that is coming over has been vaccinated. that is the only thing. i'm worried about that with the variant coming out. you can't be too careful. dion: nice to all of those plans though. you can stay up to date on the latest covid headlines by heading to abc7news.com/coronavirus. dan: at least two suspects are wanted for a crime spree in palo alto. they robbed a man at channing avenue and bryant street. suspects broke into several vehicles at nearby stanford shopping center. it happened at 6:15. not far from the downtown area.

the suspects were in a black two-door honda accord. last seen on sand hill road headed to interstate 280. dion: a dramatic rescue played out this evening at thornton state beach after a man got stuck on the cliff. this started a little before 6:00 p.m. a rescuer used a rope to rappel down the cliff to reach a person who had gotten trapped. it was a long way back up. about 500 feet. dan: on the east bay, a woman was found shot to death inside a home in east oakland. officers were called to a home on 23rd avenue and east 16th streets. they found a woman dead from an apparent gunshot wound. police tell us this is an open investigation but believe it is a homicide.

dion: governor gavin newsom got a firsthand look today at homelessness in the bay area. he brought along members of his cabinet. just last year the governor announced the state would spend $12 billion to get people off the streets. there is a proposal to spend an additional $2 billion on mental health and housing. dan: in the south bay, the san jose business center opens its doors to thousands of visitors. it is bringing a much needed boost to surrounding businesses. with turn our focus to the economy, one of the key issues we're addressing in order to build a better bay area. reporter: it is game on at the san jose convention center for genesis 8. competitors. crowds signaled the long-awaited comeback. the event is build as the --

bill as the largest super smash brothers tournament in the world with bay area roots. >> we started in 2009 in a barn on the fairgrounds in antioch. that was the only place we could figure out where to put 600 people that came to our first event. reporter: if 600 then to an estimated 5,000 people descrengd upon downtown san jose friday. reconnecting people with shared interests once again in person. and of course after the day's super smash brothers battle, visitors will venture off to downtown san jose for the much needed economic boost. typical of many conventions, we found somebody in a costume. >> definitely going to be out this weekend. going restaurants and bars and stuff. reporter: welcome words from chef david kosta. he said he wasn't only busy

cooking but busing tables between orders. >> the people coming for the event at the convention center. it is going to be a lot people at the same time. maybe the same hours. it is very good. reporter: friday evening we spotted crowds across the conventions keep surrounding business busy. they bring in more hotel bookings and create more jobs. >> the more business and support we have as an organization and a city to bring these conferences and meetings to san jose, the better it is for the entire community. reporter: back at the convention center, ronny palma expects more event to come back on line. he said the pandemic has forced organizers to find a way to incorporate nostalgia and thenes where you can step back and re-evaluate and pause and say what do we really want from

dion: tonight we are continuing our coverage where stolen good end up in san francisco. yesterday our i-team told you aboutabout people blatantly selg stolen items. residents have noticed a dramatic uptick of street vendors in the last month. reporter: before the pandemic, he was a construction worker. this is his new source of income. he is one of dozens of vendors in san francisco's mission district. how much do you pay for these

things? >> he paid $7 for them. sell it for $9. reporter: he slightly marks up the price. he isinnywhere between $.50 to two dollars per item. do you k you don't know, you just by the -- them at the flee market? reporter: he says he would never steal. he bought everything you see here, though he does not ask where the items are coming from. his profits he pays the bills and the rest he sends to his kids in mexico. one is going to college and the other is in high school. lately he says business has been difficult. two years ago, how many vendors were here? like six. now 20. watching from afar is this woman who opened a jewelry store 14 years ago. she used to be a street vendor

and understands the struggle. you don't mind competition, you just wanted to be fair. that's right. she wants vendors to have permits, many say they want that too. would you like a permit to sell here? we walked down the block to speak to the executive director of the cultural district. there is a program that would require street vendors to have permits starting next month. >> after may 7, if someone cannot prove where items come from, will be confiscated and asked to move. reporter: proof of purchase is complicated in many cases. >> the problem is they go to the flea market, to get them legally but they don't get the receipts, so when they come here they would not people to prove where they items.

reporter: so far 22 vend vors signed up. they will assign specific areas for these vendors to work. dan: today twitter's board of directors are given additional time to purchase additional shares at a discount, a poison pill to keep elon musk from purchasing twitter. musk announcedded his $43 billion bid yesterday. only on 7, we got an exclusive look at cal fire's training center in napa county as firefighters prepare for what could be another long wildfire season. >> let's go!

dan: they are working hard at this center which opened up nearly a month and a half earlier than normal. with the state nil in a drought and brush turning golden brown despite recent rain, firefighters are expected to be dealing with a lot of wildfires this summer. some have been through the camp before and say the job is never an easy one. >> it is a lotier without 110-degree weather and fire encroaching on us. i'm practicing. getting ready for the season. going to be a busy one. dan: all to have firefighters at this weeks camp pass. dion: take a look at the full moon tonight set to honor spring's rival, the pink moon. it won't actually be that color, though, sorry so say. nasa says the pink moon will last until early monday morning
