at penn state university, notching wins and building a football dynasty. but a shocking scandal changed everything. now, ten years after his death, a new e60 documentary takes an in-depth look at the fallout and what's happened since. here's espn's john barr. >> reporter: deep in central pennsylvania is the sprawling campus of penn state university. the school rose to national prominence in large part because of one thing, football. and one man. joe paterno. >> you actually don't understand the magnitude of his legacy and what you're becoming a part of. you don't really get it until you get there. and i didn't really understand until i stepped foot on campus, and it just took my breath away. >> growing up, if you wanted to go play football at penn state, you were going to play for joe paterno and penn state. >> joe paterno was such an

iconic person. penn state, one of the most prominent brands in all of college sports. >> reporter: but if you spend time on campus today, walking among the nearly 46,000 students and hundreds of buildings, you'd ly see any evidence of the legendary coach. no plaques. no statue. paterno's name does remain on the library, but that's it. it's as if all other signs of his presence have been erased. all because of what happened ten years ago. >> a coach from one of america's best-known college football teams is arrested on sex abuse charges. >> former coach jerry san doesky charged with abusing several boys. >> ugly abuse charges against a former couch at a college football powerhouse, penn state. >> reporter: on november 5th,

2011, after a more than three-year investigation, jerry san doesky, assistant on paterno's staff for 32 seasons, was charged with 52 counts of sexually molesting eight boys from 1994 to 2009. >> some of those assaults allegedly occurred while sandusky was a coach at penn state, while others happened on the penn state campus and elsewhere after sandusky had retired from his coaching position. >> the situation is in the courts, and i'm not to make any comments. >> can you tell us if you had any inappropriate relations with young boys, sir? >> you didn't hear what i said. i said i am -- i've been advised by my attorney, i am following orders. >> reporter: sandusky retired in 1999 to dedicate himself to the second mile, a nonprofit he'd founded to help at-risk kids.

that's where he met his victims. and according to state prosecutors, sandusky was enabled by some of the most powerful men at penn state. >> athletic director tim curley and vice president of business and finance gary schultz. their inaction likely allowed a child predator to continue to victim it's children for many, many years. >> reporter: curley and schultz were charged with failing to report child sexual abuse and perjury. >> i can't tell you how upsetting this was in my life at that time. >> it then became a university issue, and of course because jerry sandusky had been a coach

and was allied in the public's thinking with penn state, then it became a joe paterno story. >> reporter: according to prosecutors, paterno had been approached by former graduate assistant coach mike mcqueary, who told him about an incident mcqueary witnessed inside the penn state football facility in 2001. mcqueary said he went to the locker room after hours, heard what sounded like sexual sounds coming from the shower, looked in, and saw a naked boy around 10 years old being raped by jerry sandusky. >> whatever mike told him, joe then went to follow university policy, followed state law, and reported it up the chain, which is exactly what he's supposed to do and all that he's allowed to do.

>> reporter: mcqueary would later email state prosecutors. "i cannot say 1,000% sure that it was sodomy." but he described the incident as a sexual act that was "way over the line," something he says he conveyed to paterno. who recalled his next steps in an interview with "the washington post." >> i called, you know, my superiors. and i said, hey, we got a problem, i think, would you guys look into it? because i didn't know. you know, i had never had to deal with something like that. i wouldn't feel adequate. >> reporter: in an email exchange shortly after the shower incident was brought to paterno's attention, then-president graham spanier, administrator gary schultz, and athletic director tim curley discussed reporting the incident to the proper authorities, but ultimately decided not to report it at all.

at one point, curley wrote," after giving it more thought and talking it over with joe, we want to assist the individual," meaning sandusky, "to get him professional help." spanier responded "the only downside for us is if the message isn't heard and acted upon, then we become vulnerable for not having reported it." >> well, my biggest regret is that we didn't turn it in for department of welfare to investigate it. i think, you know, that's what we should have done. >> looking back, do you regret not reporting it to the department of public welfare? >> if we had known it was more, of course it would have been responsible to notify anybody and everybody who might have intervened. >> reporter: at the time, paterno was not accused of any wrongdoing. >> he's been cooperative with the investigators in this case.

he's not regarded as a target at this point. >> reporter: but paterno did become the focus of the public and the media. >> it can only be described as a media frenzy. it took on a life of its own. >> every day you woke up like, what next? you just did not know what was coming from one day to the next. >> it was distressing. it seemed a little out of control. >> reporter: many were angry with paterno for not going to police and using his considerable power to do more. a sentiment shared by even his most loyal supporters. >> this is more than a football legacy, this is about people. and if we can't protect our kids, we as a society are pathetic. >> i thought, what if my kids were there and something happened to my kids?

>> i get mad. and it's -- it's pretty disturbing. >> it was visceral. it was deep in me. and so -- i knew them, and i knew the people involved, and i knew it was going to ruin families, and i knew the devastation that was going to come from this. and it was just -- sad. it was just depressing. and if joe had an inkling, then he should have said something. >> i know you guys have a lot of questions, and i was hoping i was going to be able to answer them today. but we'll try to do it soon. as soon as we can. can't do it today. >> coach -- >> joe, joe! >> our thanks to john. three penn state officials, then-president graham spanier, vice president gary shuts, and athletic director tim curley, were convicted of child

life. >> i felt like i had to represent the black woman, the haitian women, the single mothers. i mean, there was a lot on my shoulders. >> reporter: culminating as the first black real housewife of beverly hills. >> life is an audition, and honey, i am getting that part. >> the first week before it started airing, i freaked out. i didn't want people to sort of put a label on me, and that's what they expected me to come. turning tables. cussing people out. and being the angry black woman. because that's not who i am. >> reporter: for decades the 55-year-old made a name for herself on magazines, on movie sets, on the small screen with hollywood heavyweights like jamie foxx. now she's spilling some tea in her new memoir "love me as i am." >> you said something along the lines of, no one ever asks me what it's like to be a black woman in hollywood. >> yeah. >> tell us ask you. what's it like? >> being a black woman in hollywood when i started was very challenging.

because there were so many roles that i wanted a chance at that i wasn't even given a chance. or i wasn't even thought of. we weren't being represented in tv shows in movies, like we should have. >> reporter: these days she's using her newfound reality tv fame to tackle subtle racial issues like what she saw as unconscious bias, when fellow housewife kyle richards accused her of failing to pay a $5,000 charity pledge. >> you calling me out about not paying with a charity cut me to the core. >> i know you're a good person. you took care of it right away after that. >> you know, i don't think they've ever had to look at it in someone else's perspective, because their landscape was all white, right? it wasn't just not paying for the charity, it's like, what are you saying and the connotations that come with being a black woman and not paying? >> there's stereotypes, that people think we don't pay our rent that we don't tip. >> it's almost as if you pointed out an invisible line she had crossed. >> yes. >> and hadn't seen. >> right. and didn't know there was a line

there. she's not racist at all. i want to make sure that's clear. >> i appreciate you sharing that with me. >> what i loved is that when i did sit with kyle, she understood. she heard me. and the world was talking about it. this is, you know, in the middle of black lives matter and also i felt like, if it's truly a reality show, this is my reality. >> reporter: oftentimes that reality can be a harsh one. in 2020, housewife erika jayne and her now-estranged husband tom girardi were hit with a lawsuit alleging the attorney embezzled money from his own clients, intended for victims' compensation. some of those victims featured on the hulu documentary "the housewife and the hustler." did you see it? >> i did see it. >> what did you think? >> it's hard to watch. it's unbelievable, if everything is true. actual people saying they've been wronged. >> reporter: a new trailer for the upcoming 12th season of "the real housewives of beverly hills" promises even more drama. >> you want to be on the side of

the victims because you think that's cool. what i'm telling you -- >> i don't think it's cool. >> i don't give a [ bleep ] about anybody else but me. >> what do you make of this skirmish? >> how do you not feel for the victims? i think erika has to protecters. but our angst with her is, where's the compassion? >> reporter: a judge dismissed erika from the 2020 embezzlement and fraud lawsuit, but she has been named in new lawsuits this year. her team declined to comment. but garcelle has overcome her own share of adversities long before becoming a housewife. starting at age 7, a haitian immigrant plopped down in massachusetts. >> when we moved, it was the dead of winter. i didn't speak a word of english. i had rarely seen white people. it was definitely a culture shock. and i learned english watching "sesame street," like a lot of immigrants do. >> how do you learn english watching "sesame street"? >> you count with the count. you sing with big bird. it was really mimicking what i

heard. >> even though you went on to be the cheerleader and well adjusted, you were the only black girl in a mostly white school? >> absolutely. kids would touch my skin or pull on my hair because they hadn't seen that texture, they hadn't seen someone of color. >> reporter: often the only black woman in the room, as a model discovered at the tender age of 17. >> that moment trailblazing, too, because there aren't a lot of black models doing high-profile campaigns. >> no, no, definitely not then. and i remember people saying, oh, if you're going to go to new york you should probably get your nose done so it's less black. and i was like, i'm not doing that. >> reporter: soon her career thrived. posing on covers of "essence" magazine. starring in a luther vandross music video. ♪ ♪ such a woman beautiful smile ♪ at 19, appearing alongside eddie murphy in his hit film "coming to america." >> in the book you wrote that

maybe eddie murphy was the fish that got away. >> we went out to dinners. i went to his house in jersey. met his momand his crew. >> reporter: beauvais had a brief role on "the cosby show" and says bill cosby invited her to his brownstone to go over lines. >> he offered me a drink. >> you were actually underage? >> i was underage. and i took a sip. and it didn't feel right. it didn't feel right at all. >> you listened to your gut? >> i listened to my gut, and i ran out of there as quickly as i could. and he called a couple of times later, i didn't pick up. >> reporter: cosby's publicist declined to comment. the mother of three confronts other difficult life moments in her book, like giving birth to twins after years of fertility struggles. then, she says, she later discovered that her husband had been cheating on her for five years. >> there were nights that i cried so hard and so long that the next day felt like i did a

gym workout. i was in so much pain. >> reporter: so outraged she sent an email to his fellow hollywood agents which was leaked to the press. >> it was just another layer of pain all over again. and people -- i would have women, when i was at the park with the kids, come up to me and go, "good for you for sending that email, you are my hero." >> reporter: the two divorced in 2011 but garcelle says through therapy and self-help books, coparenting is working. >> now we do family things together, we have thanksgiving together. when i look at my boys, i feel like they benefited so much. they're well adjusted, they're kind, they're sweet boys. >> reporter: her life's epic journey taking her from haiti to hollywood. her tenacity now stronger than ever. in one of the chapters you say, picke if i could speak to my 5-year-old self what would i say? >> whew. i would say, go on the journey. don't be so scared. and you're going to end up okay.
