rain with hayward into fremont and further into the valley. it is spotty light rain from livermore and down around boulder creek we have moderate rain. this is a level 1 system, brief and heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms. as we look at the wind, temperatures in the 50's. the wind is gusting over 40 miles an hour sso, 20 miles an hour san mateo. morning hours it is mild and mid-60's throughout the afternoon, more rain in my seven-day outlook, stay tuned. liz: let us start with the latest of the pandemic, cases are edging up once again in california with the state reporting 7600 as of friday. the positivity rate is also rising at 2.1% after an increase of half a percent from last week.

hospitalizations have been trending downward. 1000 peoplar hospitalized due to covid. around the bay area we are finding that families are gathering for the easter and passover holidays and most are cautiously excited. here is tara campbell. tara: the mask is the only real indicator of a pandemic, people packing into san francisco international airport ready to travel. tell me how you feel to be here today at the airport going for a trip? >> nervous because i have not been on a plane for three years. tara: the majority of people we spoke with were eager to get going. >> i feel great, it is nice to get out after this covid situation. tara: this family on their way to hawaii. their 16-year-old says she has more excited than nervous. >> obviously it is a little bit shaky with covid and the health

situation, there is a bunch of viruses going around, but i am excited. tara: while people are clearly ready to put the pandemic behind, a doctor at stanford has advice for everyone this holiday weekend. >> there is high transmission, this is based on wastewater data. tara: because of that, precautionary measures are a must. everything from masking to rapid testing. >> if everyone does a test before the gathering, and it is a low likelihood that anyone will be infectious and spreading. tara: if the shoppers are any indication, people are ready to gather. philip levi is glad that his son gets to experience fun easter traditions. >> we are going to take him to an easter egg hunts outdoors, probably socially distanced and as safe as possible. we will get on with our lives. tara: marlowe is pumped about prepping the holiday meal. >> it is nice to have the family

dramatic rescue played out after a man got stuck on a cliff. this happened before 6:00 on friday. a rescuer repels down the cliff to reach the person who gotten trapped. after attracting some -- after attaching safety gear it was a long way back up, nearly 500 feet. the man is not hurt and it is unclear how he got stranded. now to the latest on the war in ukraine. president zelenskyy is accusing russian troops of terrorizing civilians and hunting for anyone who served in ukraine's military and government. christine sloan has more. christine: a u.s. official says volodymyr zelenskyy is asking president joe biden to designate russia a state sponsor of terrorism. that would trigger some of the toughest sanctions under u.s. law.

in his friday speech, zelenskyy called for a ban on russian oil saying that democratic countries "must admit that money for russian energy resources is money for the destruction of democracy." >> the less weapons that the russian federation has the better for us, the less capable they are. christine: it is the same mentality that russia has about ukraine. russia sending a formal diplomatic message to the u.s. and all nations arming ukraine demanding that they stop sending weapons or risk unpredictable consequences. the warning comes as the u.s. begins delivering 800 $1 million worth of new weapons to ukraine. >> given the potential desperation a president putin and the russian leadership, none of us can take lightly -- likely the threat posed by a resort to tactical nuclear weapons or yellow -- or low yield nuclear weapons. christine: with more horrific discoveries inboar o marpol, the

at the homelessness crisis in the bay area. his office shared photos of a visit to an encampment in oakland. the governor brought along members of his cabinet as well. he announced that the state would spend $12 billion to get people off the streets and there is a proposal to spend an additional 2 billion on mental health and housing. the number of people unemployed in california dipped below one million in march for the first time since a pandemic. the state has recovered almost all of the 2.7 one million jobs lost when the governor issued a stay-at-home order. california is outpacing the rest of the nation for job growth with the unemployment rate at 4.9%, and there are still labor shortages. if you happen to be outside this early, he would know or you are hearing that it is raining. -- you would know or hear that it is raining. lisa: rain, wind, fog, and from santa cruz, it is soggy.

is his new source of income, one of dozens of vendors who have set up shop on 24th street in the mission district. how much do you pay for these things? you pay seven dollars for them? and you sell them for nine dollars. he buys his merchandise at the flea market and slightly marks up the price and is making $.50 to two dollars for items. do you know if any of them are stolen? you do not know, you just buy them at the free market. he says he would never steal and he bought everything you will see, although he does not ask where the items are coming from. with his profits he pays the bills and the rest he sends to his kids in mexico, one is going to college and the other one is in high school. lately he says that business has been difficult. three years ago how many venue -- how many vendors were out

fast. calfire is getting a job hiring back seasonal firefighters earlier than in years past. cornell barnard got exclusive access to a training academy where firefighters are gearing up for a real tough season. >> make sure you are ready to play the game real. all ppe's will be worn. the fire is through that gate. let us go. cornell: the training is beyond intense. >> here we go, 100 feet in. cornell: most of the seasonal firefighters have been through the training academy before, but it never gets easier. how hard is that? >> pretty hard. it is lot -- it is a lot easier without 100 10 degree weather and fire encroaching. cornell: 105 firefighters are back on the job at this training facility nearly a month and a half earlier than usual, due to

bridge and along the peninsula. san mateo, look at that, good rain from what would city down to stanford and light and consistent rain from half moon bay along the coast crossing into the east bay. hayward, wet weather for you livermore getting into a heavy downpour in the past hour or so. further south into santa cruz, healthy rain all the way down to monterey and even big sur getting into the act. this will be a quick mover with temperatures in the 50's. 55 san jose with visibility limited over two miles around san carlos and checking out the wind anywhere from gusts to 20 miles an hour oakland and livermore and you can see gusty wind along the coast along into novato. this is a soggy start for the weekend, rainy and windy, bright and sunny not only for easter but this afternoon as well.

two more storms coming into play, one favoring the north bay, everyone gets a good dose of -- dose of rain. you can see the rain getting spotty, taking us through 9:00 and lingering in the south and east s icoming out ny but rainfall amounts anywhere from one third of an inch, maybe more than that along the peninsula, novato 2/10 of an inch and the santa cruz mountains three quarters of an inch. the wind out ahead of the system 20 to 38 miles an hour. but wind pivots to the west and it will be a breezy afternoon with the wind gusting 25 to 30 miles an hour along the coast, sunny, bright into a chilly night tonight. in the mountains it is a winter weather advisory. temperatures in the upper 30's, rainy with snow at the past levels including donner and west

of 89, 6 to 12 inches. 15 inches for the peaks. a little late but still some good news. by the afternoon and 10:00 or 11:00 sunny with a chilly day in san francisco. 58 and breezy. 66 in oakland. the accuweather 7 day forecast level 1 system throughout the morning hours and then a sunny easter looking at temperatures climbing between 70's inland between now and monday with 60's around the bay. tuesday another level 1 system favoring the north bay. into wednesday or thursday this is a weak atmospheric river. that will bring an inch of rain as far south as san francisco, better late than never. delaying fire season but we will soak up every drop. >> it is nice at the rain

liz: bart will shut down a section of track in the east bay, the first of 10 this year. trains will not run from south hayward and union city stations today and sunday as crews replace part of the track. they will offer free bus service between the stations and drivers will add up to 25 minutes between their trips. the next shutdown will take place april 30 and may 1. the increase in covid numbers are prompting health officials to reinstate mask mandates that the question is will that be the case in the bay area. dustin shows us why local doctors are focusing on one key metric.

center opened its doors to thousands of visitors. a gaming convention born in the bay area is bringing a much-needed boost to surrounding businesses. amanda del castillo yo turns our issue -- turns our focus to the economy. amanda: it is game on at the san jose mchenry convention center for genesis 8. this signals a long-awaited comeback. the event is billed as the largest grassroots community run super smash brothers tournament in the world with bay area roots. >> we started in a barn in the contra costa county fairgrounds in antioch because it was the only place we could figure out where to put 600 people that came to our first event. amanda: from 600 to 5000 people

rising waters. years of planning to help the flood prone san jose is about to result in new levies. david louis shows us how this will benefit the ecosystem. david: at the southernmost tip of san francisco bay such a small community and a population of 2000 who has lived with flooding for decades. the heavy equipment is starting work on a major project to stop the cycle of flooding with rising sea levels in mind. >> we will get 15 feet of levee height and that is a good step to getting the flood protection when we have a flooding event. david: kevin garnett and the u.s. army corps of engineers are working with environmental and coastal protection agencies to address the flooding and restoration of habitat from old salt ponds. >> we are using a horizontal levee that would extend a more vertical face of the levee
