the boy's parents now speaking out. prince harry opens up. what he's saying about his son archie. why it could be easier to find out how much money your co-workers make. good monday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> i'm dion lim in for mona. we begin with breaking news out of ukraine. the mayor of lviv saying they're assessing the damage after at least several missile strikes. at least six people have been killed. >> lviv has been a sanctuary for people fleeing mariupol. that's where abc's em nguyen begins our coverage. >> reporter: this sprawling steel plant is the final pocket of resistance in mariupol. the russian military says about 2,500 ukrainian fighters are still hold up inside the plant

which spans four square miles and features a system of underground tunnels. the city's police chief says civilians are sheltering there. on sunday ukrainian forces defied russian demands to surrender the plant. the rest of mariupol is all but obliterated after weeks of russian bombings. officials say even though the city is under ukrainian control its residents are suffering unbearable conditions. >> they have no water, no food, no heat, no electricity. >> reporter: 100,000 civilians remain trapped in mariupol. [speaking foreign language] abc's james longman met this couple after they fled the city with their 9-year-old daughter. >> she knows there were women in the basement of her building giving birth in those conditions. she's smiling now, but this had such an impact on so many kids.

he's so glad his daughter is safe. you can see it in his face. >> reporter: capturing mariupol would give russia a land bridge to occupied crimea, allowing its forces to join unexpected new russian offensive in the donbas region. experts say by announcing full control of the city president putin could sell the invasion as a win to his people. [speaking foreign language] speaking to cnn ukrainian president zelenskyy vowed ukraine would not give up territory in the east, saying the fight for mariupol could influence the course of the war. zelenskyy said if russia eliminates the remaining troops to mariupol, it could bring peace talks to an end. em nguyen abc news. >> thanks, em. russian forces have been hitting military targets around kyiv in retaliation for ukraine sinking a russian warship. turning to the pandemic, new precautions are in place as covid cases rise in much of the

country. philadelphia is reinstating its indoor mask mandate today. philadelphia is among 31 states seeing an uptick in cases mostly from the more contagious omicron subvariant. precautions are in place for runners at the boston marathon. the historic race is back at full capacity for the first time since 2019. experts say because of rising covid case numbers we need to be vigilant. >> i think what we need to be doing is monitoring this carefully. i don't expect a surge like we saw in january. i think that is extremely unlikely. we have to take these things seriously and see where it goes. >> despite the growing number of new cases, hospitalizations from covid remain low. we're learning more this morning about a string of mass shootings over the weekend. one turning deadly at an airbnb, another at a busy shopping mall sending people running for the exits. a violent easter weekend included separate mass shootings

at a mall, airbnb, and nightclub. in pittsburgh there's an urgent manhunt for a gunman who opened fire at this party. video shows panic inside the airbnb rental home where at least 90 shots were fired. 2 people were killed, 11 injured. >> this goes back to having too many illegal guns on the streets. >> reporter: in south carolina authorities are investigating two mass shootings. gunfire broke out at a nightclub in hampton county where the owner says gunfire opened up. >> we were in the club having a good time and shots started. >> they shot from the back of the club. >> reporter: nine people were wounded. police have not released details on a suspect or motive. also, chaos erupting in this mall in columbia, south carolina. police believe an ongoing fight between multiple people led to

the gunfire. a judge has granted bond to the only person arrested so far. if he posts the $25,000 bond he'll be on house arrest. he'll be allowed to travel to work while wearing an ankle monitor. his lawyer says it was unprovoked by him. he called the police, turned himself in, turned over the firearm used. that's why he got a $25,000 bond. mass shootings are up 66% in the u.s. in the last two years. this violent weekend came days after a gunman opened fire in a new york subway. the city's mayor says he agrees with critics who say progressive left policies have played a roll in the rise in crime. >> we have to be honest about what we're doing generationally that has created the crime problem we're facing right now. that's why we believe in intervention and prevention to solve this issue. >> mayor adams insists the rise in violent crime spans both blue

and red states. meanwhile, we've learned the victims of the pittsburgh shooting were both 17 years old. today the biden administration is resuming the sale of leases to drill for oil and gas on federal lands despite opposition from climate change activists. the interior department says companies will have to pay higher royalty rates, a 50% increase. sales notices will be posted for leases covering 225 square miles of land, mostly in the west. republicans want more drilling to help lower oil prices. meanwhile, gas prices nationwide average $4.07 a gallon, down 26 cents from a month ago, but 40% higher than last year. a massive cargo ship is no longer stuck in the mud off the coast of maryland. after five weeks the ship was freed from its unintended home in the chesapeake bay. crews used tug boats, barges and mother nature to get the ship free. >> they were also trying to take

on extreme flooding and mudslides after days of heavy rain near the city of durban. dozens of people are missing. power and water are out for entire towns. a california mother who admits faking her own kidnapping is set to plead guilty. sherri papini appears in court today days after end ring into a plea deal with the federal government. she's charged with fraud and perjury for the hoax back in 2016 during which she claimed she was abducted by two women and abused. but she was actually spending time with her ex-boyfriend. she could face up to 25 years in prison, but prosecutors are expected to ask for a sentence of just 14 months. a former prosecutor explains how the plea deal helps papini today as the judge considers her sentence. >> the benefit of taking a plea deal is it limits her exposure to the other remaining counts. the court can take into consideration the guidelines, but the court can go above the guidelines all the way up to the statutory maximum. >> in addition to potential prison time, papini must also pay $300,000 in restitution.

now to a remarkable story from utah. a teenager missing since 2019 has been found alive, just sitting outside a store. and police did not immediately know who he was. this morning, newly released body camera video shows the moment police officers near park city, utah, found a teenager from california who had been missing for nearly 2 1/2 years. >> good morning. >> reporter: 19-year-old connerjack oswalt, who has autism, was sitting outside a store, cold and shivering. police approached him for a wellness check, urging him to get in their car. >> want to come sit in his car and warm up for a minute? >> reporter: the he to communic. dispatchers then checked the national center for missing and exploited children database, searching through 16 pages. they finally found his name and called his family. >> is it him? >> a little bit older, but yeah. >> oh, sweetheart, oh, my god.

>> he was reported missing on september 29th, 2019. his last known sighting was in willows, california, about one week later. he was 16 at the time. >> we've had a lot of false hope over the last 2 1/2 years. honestly i'm still dumbstruck by the whole situation. >> reporter: his family says after his disappearance, they never saw or heard from conner again, even giving up hope and checking morgues for their son. they say they have no idea where his journey has taken him over the last 30 months. >> we're just grateful that he is safe, he's alive, and we have our son back. that's the most important thing ever for us. >> that is remarkable. they say conner is now safe in a treatment facility. april is autism awareness month, and for more resources available, you can head to our website, atmfans.com. coming up, the popular children's cereal that's now the

quick-thinking los angeles police officers pulled this pilot out of the path. of an on coming train. >> just hearing the train and feeling the vibrations through the floor and just hearing crumpling metal, i was like, wow, that's close. >> reporter: for the first time since the harrowing rescue in january, the four officers who saved pilot mark jenkins' life reunited at a special event honor be the officers' heroic actions. >> i told them i loved them and thank you for saving my life. they outdid their duty, and i thank them for that very much. >> reporter: jenkins says he doesn't remember much about the track after taking off from whiteman airport north of l.a. just the moment he realized his engine failed. >> i had seconds to make a decision on what to do. i had always known that if i had an engine failure and i want any higher than the tower, i knew i had to take evasive action and land somewhere that didn't kill
