connected with this store, but he says the arrests are still welcome news. >> it's a good sign that we are happy to hear about. >> san jose police believe they were suspected to have worked together through january of this year. they are -- accused of targeting stories through it -- stores throughout the bay area. san jose police would not go into details about the investigation but say that had help from several other bay area police departments and those in roseville and merced. police could not answer how much jewelry they were able to recover but said the group was selling it as fast as they were stealing it. >> they need to target who is buying the stuff after they steal it. that investigation is ongoing. >> detectives also seized several guns, including assault weapons and weapons that were

converted to automatic weapons without serial numbers. the suspects all face huge consequences. >> these suspects are looking at significant prison time. dan: today, senator kluwer county investigators announcer break in a cold case known as the happy face killer. a body was identified that was found in june of 1993 is out of patricia -- who was 45 years old when she was killed. this photo was from years earlier. at 5:00, family members react to the identification as well as new details on the man who attempted to kill her and admitted he was known as the happy face killer. kristen: a 15-year-old girl was

killed at her high school today by campus trespasser. the school was locked down right after the incident. police say it was not random. the man accused of stabbing her new her. he is now in police custody. no motive has been released. survivors of crime are calling for change on how they are treated in the aftermath of those violent incidents. victims of domestic violence, mass shootings and other attacks gathered at the state capitol in sacramento to discuss what could be done better to help them heal after the crime. >> untreated trauma is a pipeline to more trauma, to more violence. that's why this report is so important. but it tells us is what survivors need, when they needed, and how they need it, in order to heal and recover. kristen: it was organized by the prosecutors alliance of california. they say it was inspired by the recent mass shooting in sacramento in which six people

were killed and 12 others injured outside a downtown nightclub. dan: sherry papini lead to guilty to a hoax back in 2016. morgan norwood has more on what is next for her and her case. morgan: sherry papini, the northern california woman who police say orchestrated and elaborate kidnapping hoax six years ago, now pleading guilty. facing a sacramento judge via zoom, where she broke down in tears moments after entering a guilty plea to charges of mail fraud and making false statements. taking the plea deal, allowing her to avoid facing trial for 35 felony counts. >> i would not call this her doing a great thing. i would call this her last ditch effort to do the best she can to help herself. >> for more than five years, sherry papini insisted she was taken at gunpoint and held captive by two hispanic woman.

they discovered she was actually staying with an ex-boyfriend and harmed herself to confirm her lies. >> sherry has let us all down with five years of manipulation, deception, calculated deception. >> the charges carry a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and a 250,000 dollars fine. she is also ordered to pay more than $300,000 in restitution to the california victims compensation board, the social security administration, the shasta county sheriff's office, and the fbi. >> it limits her exposure to the other remaining counts. the court can take into consideration the guidelines, but the court can go above the guidelines all the way up to the statutory maximum. >> she will be sentenced on july 11. morgan norwood, abc 7 news, los

angeles. kristen: a construction accident is responsible for a fire that damaged three commercial buildings. crews got the call this morning of a fire on the roof of one of the buildings. it quickly spread to the others. the fire department tells us the injuries are mild and the firefighter is going to be ok. an arrest has been made in the fire that destroyed a home depot store in san jose. the five-alarm fire started april 9 and was still flaring up two days later. san jose officials say they will release more details tomorrow. dan: quite literally, a sticky situation on highway 92 in hayward. lou spilled across some of the westbound lanes. the chp said a bucket of blue fell on a construction vehicle and just splattered across the lanes. the glue damaged some cars that drove over it and gummed up traffic.

chp officers and caltrans workers sprinkled absorbent on the glue and a caltrans sweeper truck made a pass to help brush up some of it. some lanes are still closed, but the highway should be open again in about 15 minutes. this tanker truck caused a big traffic problem across the bay bridge. it got stuck on a signpost after an accident on treasure island just before 8:00 this morning. traffic coming off the bridge came to a standstill, eventually backing up for miles as you can see from sky 7. the truck was finally worked free and the alert finally lifted about 3:00 this afternoon. kristen: turning to the weather come the skies were mostly clear today, but more rain is on the way. dan: spencer christian is here with a look at the rainy forecast. spencer: there's quite a bit of rain coming our way, not necessarily the first storm, though. you can see on the satellite radar composite image, rain is getting closer to the remainder

of the bay area. let's take a close look at the details of the storm, it ranks only one on the impact scale. through tomorrow morning we expect light rain and scattered showers. it will be breezy at times. here's the forecast animation starting at 7:00 p.m. when we expect the first raindrops to fall in parts of the north a. by about 11:30, rain will be reaching all parts of the bay area, sweeping through quickly in the overnight hours. it will leave behind some wet pavement, so that means probably a slow morning commute. rainfall totals will be under a quarter inch in most locations and there will be snow in the sierra. a closer look at the forecast in just a few minutes. dan: the annual 420 cannabis celebration in san francisco will be back this year, but the event this wednesday will be a lot different. the mayor announced the event at

golden gate park will be sponsored with food and entertainment, and for the first time, there will be on-site cannabis sales, which means some people will not be allowed to get in. >> under state law, if you are under the age of 21, you will not be allowed within the facility. this is going to be the first time this is done. you will be turned away, proof of age will be required. dan: the mayor says members of city agencies will be on hand-checking ids, prepare to turn people away. those who plan to go are encouraged to take public transportation. shuttles will be available. the runoff election to fill these assembly seat that was vacated happens tomorrow. the races for the district 17 seat. haney edge campos by a few

hundred votes in the february primary, but neither received the 50% making the runoff necessary. kristen: new developments with the mask mandates. earlier today, a florida judge struck it down, saying it exceeded the authority of u.s. health officials. a short time ago, abc news learned that tsa is no longer going to enforce it public transportation or at airports and on airplanes. so what does this mean if you're writing bart are heading to san francisco international airport? i ask a travel expert today. >> if you're traveling this afternoon or tomorrow or the next few days, you probably will not need to wear a mask, but my advice to you is bring one and be prepared to put it on in case the decision changes. it is possible for a transit system or an airline, and airport or bus company, amtrak,

to make their own decisions. remember, before we had the biden administration ruling on this, where the tsa said mask must be worn, individual airlines had their own policies about wearing masks. it is possible some airlines may choose to do this, but to be very honest, and talking with airlines, i don't think they're going to enforce it if the tsa isn't. kristen: we reached out to muni, which says for now it will still require masks. bart and the international airports are looking for more guidance from the tsa. dan: a new home bought for theuc systems president. and kidnapped, a baby goat stolen in broad daylight, and it is all caught on camera. and to be games in the bay area today. today. we are live as both the

dustin dorsey is live at the coliseum where fans are ready for tonight's game. dustin: that is right, we are all excited here. you see the fans lining up behind me to get into the coliseum this evening. it's the first time this season that they's will be playing baseball here in oakland. obviously there has been a lot of question marks this off-season of where the future will be for the a's. right now, nowhere is better than home sweet home. every beginning brings along new opportunities. a chance to make future memories, remember past history, and celebrate the present gift of opening day. with two years of pandemic baseball, the homeowner for the oakland athletics is extra special for fans. >> would last year being kind of wacky, this will be my first tailgate since 2019. >> that's why mike was first in line for the tailgate.

6:40 is the first pitch this evening. it's a great day for sports in the bay area. dustin dorsey, abc7news. kristen: let's check in with spencer christian to see the gametime weather, if you need a jacket. spencer: it's not raining yet and not likely to rain during the game, but you might need a jacket at some point. how to conditions, dry and the temperature 64 when the game starts. temperatures were dropped into the 50's later in the evening hours, so that's when you may need that jacket. the rain has not arrived here but it is beginning to push into the ukiah area, so it is on the way. at the moment we are looking at dry conditions and the camera is shaking because it's a bit windy up in the higher elevations. under increasingly cloudy skies, 66 across the bay, low 70's in san jose and santa clara and 55

at half moon bay. 58 degrees right now in santa rosa, 72 at fairfield and from the rooftop camera looking across the bay across the embarcadero, you can see it's getting cloudier over the bay. the rain will arrive in the north bay first and continue spreading through the overnight and into the early morning hours. sunny, drier, and warmer weather over the weekend. tomorrow morning we expect light rain and scattered showers, less than a quarter inch for most locations and breezy at times. by 11:30 tonight, we expect the rain to have pushed into san francisco and over to the east bay. eventually swinging down to the south bay as the morning commute gets underway and most of the rain will have ended by about 5:00 a.m.. there will be wet pavement left

behind so if you are a morning commuter, bear that in mind that it may take a little longer to get to work. we are expecting 4-7 inches of snow and slick roads and perhaps reduced visibility. upper 40's to low 50's, for the most part, highs tomorrow range from upper 50's to low 60's around the bay shoreline. let's take a look at the next storm coming in. forecast animation starts at 7:00 a.m. wednesday and that's formal bring heavier rain to most of the bay area. through the day on friday, we expect rainfall totals to be quite substantial for this system. about a half inch to one point

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. kristen: and historic house in berkeley purchase for the president of the uc system has been targeted by taggers. leslie brinkley has more on the history of the house and the apparent reason it was tagged. leslie: the historically significant mansion was purchased for $6.5 million last week as a new residence for the uc president. over the weekend, it was tagged with the words save rochdale. it provides affordable housing is -- a lack of funding for seismic retrofit. the home was built in 1928 by the founders of a church in san francisco. it was designed by architect julia morgan, one of the first women to graduate from uc

plane since before the pandemic, but i would still wear it. i don't know, it's just such an enclosed space and i would just feel better keeping it off -- keeping it on, even if they get rid of the mandate for it. dan: you are still sitting a foot away from somebody and it doesn't hurt anything, if you don't mind wearing it. i always wear the mask come in even though the mandate may be dropped, i intend lying in that couple of months and i will certainly be wearing mine, and i hope others will voluntarily where there's. kristen: same thing, it doesn't bother me to keep it on. if you keep your shoes on inside the house, you might want to think about stopping. no big surprise, but researchers with 360 dust analysis say leaving on your shoes can bring
