san rafael, california, north of us here, a group of high school boys who called themselves "the waldos" because they would hang out and smoke next to a wall every day at 4:20. did that, somehow it caught on, spread all over. this is what the waldos look like now, gaze upon them. [ laughter ] those are the founding fathers of 4/20, ranging from most to least high. [ applause ] did you know this story, guillermo? >> guillermo: no, i have no idea. [ laughter ] according to a new poll from cbs news, a vast majority of americans want the federal government to legalize cannabis for recreational purchases. [ cheers and applause ] 66% are in favor. 34% no. 66% of americans don't agree on anything. we can barely get 66% of americans to agree that horse medicine is for horses. [ laughter ] that's a lot of people. we did an experiment involving guillermo today. i don't know if you notice that something's a little different about him. the producers of the tonys today sent a letter to prospective audience members that said, "the tony awards has a strict no violence policy. in the event of an incident, the perpetrator will be removed from the event immediately." we're looking at you, chita rivera! launched a game that's really taken over the nation. it's called "who's high?" the idea being i talk to three people on hollywood boulevard, and try to guess which one of them is high. six years later, cannabis is now legal, making it almost impossible to find anyone in the state of california who is not high. so tonight, we've got a new twist, it's time to play "who's not high?" [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: and this is perfect. i know you live in my hometown, las vegas. >> i do. >> jimmy: you've been live there for how long now? >> it's been about 17 years. >> jimmy: 17 years. you made the movie "leaving las vegas" then you didn't, you stayed. [ laughter ] >> i didn't leave, i went back and i stayed. vegas has been good to me, it really was. it's both a small town and a big city. it's one of the most unique addresses in the world. >> jimmy: absolutely. >> if you want to go to the strip and participate, you can. but if you want to just go with the locals and go to some of the cool restaurants, you can do that as well. >> jimmy: that's exactly how i would describe living there. and i love that you live there. for tax reasons? [ laughter ] >> originally, yeah, right? that's where people go. then i began to learn to love it. you know, also, i've had great experiences making movies there. "leaving las vegas" was great. [ cheers and applause ] "honeymoon in vegas" was great.

there's good mojo there for me so i like making movies. i tried to get a movie studio built there, then elon musk came in and all the money i got for the movie studio, i got $80 million, they put it into the tesla corporation. which then ironically drained all the water out of the city. >> jimmy: wonderful. >> yeah, wonderful. but i almost had it, i almost had a studio. >> jimmy: that's a lot of money to spend so you don't have to laughterrit.-long flight to.a e yoa. y ney. >> jimmy: i heard a story about you, tell me if this is true. i have a few of these stories. >> sure. >> jimmy: that you had $200. >> yes. >> jimmy: you played roulette, you turned it into like $200,000? >> no, no, nothing that extraordinary. $20,000. >> jimmy: $20,000, okay. >> i did it in about a half hour. and i was in the bahamas. >> jimmy: okay. >> and it was one of those nights, do you ever have one of those nights where you feel like the mojo is with you, you can do nothing wrong, everything was going to go your way? >> jimmy: i've never had that,

[ laughter ] >> you will. it was one of those nights. my game, yes, my came was roulette. it was about, i would say about 20 years ago. and i went into -- what's that big hotel in the bahamas, the atlantis? >> jimmy: yeah, the atlantis, yeah. >> yeah, i went in, i went to the roulette table. and i just knew i had it. and every number i chose -- and i often would choose the same number -- it kept winning. and then even the woman that was spinning the ball said, "nothing sweeter than a repeater." [ laughter ] and i went on doing it. and i said, this is magic, i did it! you know, it happened! so the next day i say, this is so special. i'm going to go -- i found anner on manage. i lived across nassau harbor. i found an orphanage. i met all the children. and i said to the head mistress, this is for you, $20,000 cash in her hand, and i never gambled again because it would ruin the

magic of that night. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: never gambled again, wow. >> so i -- >> jimmy: wow. >> i ended it on a win. >> jimmy: that's incredible. unfortunately, those kids went and gambled it all away. [ laughter ] >> why, i don't know. i was dreaming about two-headed eagles. okay? [ laughter ] and one night i had this dream, and the next day my manager at the time got a phone call saying, oh, i've got a two-headed snake that i found in northridge, i think your client,

nick cage, would be interested. i won't mention how much it cost because that's going to go everywhere. >> jimmy: more than the orphanage got or less? >> more, like four times -- oh, i should have kept that money. no, no, i -- i bought it. >> you bought it? >> i bought it. >> did it have two names or one name? [ laughter ] >> the reptiles don't care about us. they don't want us to name them. they're not part of our world. but they would fight. and one head was more dominant than the other. [ laughter ] i don't know why it was going to the same stomach. but i would have to put a spatula between the two heads to feed them and it got a little too freaky for me. >> jimmy: what? [ laughter ] >> i took it to the audubon zoo, i said, this is for you. they had a great time with it. i think they did name it, i don't know what the name was. but it lived for 14 years and it died just recently. >> jimmy: wow. >> it was a good time for the snake and for the folks that visited the zoo. >> jimmy: do your representatives get a lot of phone calls from people wanting

to sell you strange stuff? >> i think they -- they've learned not -- if they do get the call, they learn not to -- >> jimmy: they don't tell you anymore, yeah, that's probably -- do you have any pets now? anything unusual? >> i have something -- you want to talk about the unusual. i what was what is called an african pied crow. a very well-dressed crow. he's got black feathers and a tuft of white feather -- this is for all you guys toking up on 4/20. [ laughter ] he looks like he's wearing a tuxedo. he likes to say hi when i walk in the room, he's very smart, when i leave he says bye. i didn't teach him, he came with the vocabulary. [ laughter ] one day he called me an a-hole. i don't know why, it came out. >> jimmy: like a parrot, crows are able to say words? >> they do talk, yes. >> jimmy: i didn't know that. i know they're smart. my neighbor had one, it would come visit and jump on your head. >> yeah, he loves to do that. >> jimmy: hang out on your head.

i didn't know if they wanted to do some sort of an andy samberg "snl" mockfest. >> jimmy: right. >> and tom, the director, wrote me a very intelligent letter. and i knew from his letter that he was a genuine film enthusiast. he wanted to make a movie about people. funny, it was absurd comedy, but also some heartstrings, some nuance, some emotion. so i felt that i was in good hands. and i'm very happy. >> jimmy: you were. what's tom's last name? >> gormakin. >> jimmy: tom is obviously a huge -- perhaps even somebody you should get a restraining order against level fan. >>. all the elements. in exploring - i got my -- my certificate on the great barrier reef, i explored the element of water. air, i didn't really get as far as i wanted to, i wanted to be a hang glider, didn't happen. fire, i felt like "ghost rider," i had explored fire. i wanted to explore earth. i want to start spelunking, i want to start exploring caves. i think we were in north dakota, black hills, shooting one of the "treasure" movies. i said, i hear there's a cave for sale, let's go look at it. and i did and it was beautiful. this is good for 4/20. all these stalactites. all this milky quartz-like, crystaline walls. at the time i was married and i was like, i'd like to be in -- it looked like unfiltered sake. i'd like to buy this and just go down in the bottom of the cave and get totally naked with my

>> jimmy: how's it going? vanessa, forgive me if this is an indelicate or inappropriate question, but do you celebrate 4/20, if you know what i mean? >> you know, i -- i don't celebrate it as much as i celebrate other holidays. but i do -- i do give it its, you know -- >> jimmy: you do. at what age did you first encounter marijuana, as they call it? >> yes, well, you know, my parents -- my brother and i, when we were sort of in middle school, found a lot of my parents' weed. >> jimmy: oh. >> i think they kept it in the freezer. sometimes we would find like rolling papers in my mom's purse and we would write her notes on them. [ laughter ] "we need to go get snacks" or whatever. she was embarrassed by that, but then she was more embarrassed when i told so many people about it. stoners in general? >> yeah, big druggies. >> jimmy: did you ever see them high? >> i don't know that i ever saw them high. one time we went on a family trip where my brother and i got high. we were in seattle. honestly, a family trip six years ago, it wasn't really that long ago. [ laughter ] whatever. but it was kind of before, like, weed was legal in a lot of states. so we were in seattle. we went to the dispensary, we thought it was so cool. my brother's friend told him you have to have at least 40 milligrams of weed in order to feel anything, like an edible. >> jimmy: a thc. >> a thc, yes. >> jimmy: that is a tremendous amount of thc to consume. >> tremendous amount. >> jimmy: yes. >> my brother and i bought this bag of car ankles. he had 60 milligrams' worth, i had 40 milligrams. >> jimmy: oh my god, really? >> we should have known we were finishing the whole bag, that that was a sign that we were having a lot. anyways, we got so, so super high. and --

[ laughter ] but i just was like, what is happening? this movie is so trippy. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: this show that you've made is based on a real story, your real life, and circumstances from your -- share that, if you will. >> yes, a lot of it, it's based on someone who survived childhood leukemia to go and live their dream as a home shopping host. which is something real.

[ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: some dream. so when you were a kid, were you -- did you watch the home shopping channel? >> yeah, i watched a lot of home shopping. i really loved it. i was mesmerized by the way they, know that they touch the products and that -- the hosts interact with things. and i just -- i always thought it was so interesting. and i always wanted to, like, buy everything. i didn't get to buy a ton of stuff because i was a kid and i didn't have my own money. [ laughter ] i would just sort of like -- i just, like, loved all the stuff. >> jimmy: interesting, and you wanted everything that you saw. >> and i wanted everything, yes. >> jimmy: that's strange. kids will watch cartoons and see toys and they want them. you wouldn't necessarily -- what kinds of things would you want? >> rings and home -- homeware. i was a sophisticated kid, i guess. [ laughter ] i loved the jewelry and the clothes and the shoes. and i thought, these ladies know

where it's at. >> jimmy: so when you take on this role, you have this idea. do you have contact any of the people that actually do it to find out what it's really like? >> yes, so my co-creator, jeremy byler, of the real qvc. it was cool. >> jimmy: is that in florida? >> it's actually outside of philadelphia. in pennsylvania. >> jimmy: oh, wow. how unexpected. >> it was, yes. [ laughter ] i got to meet my two favorite hosts, jane tracy and mary beth roe. [ laughter ] they're still hosts there. they gave us this whole story about -- they told us all about their careers and all the crazy, you know -- they get crazy calls sometimes on the air. and it was just so incredible to, like, see these women and see this place which is a huge operation. you walk in and there's all these monitors from other countries and stuff that have qvc. yeah, it's really incredible. >> jimmy: keep an eye on those, too, to see what's going on? >> yeah, yeah.
