we have fog developing and napa with fog developing in parts of the north bay, plenty of sunshine and a warmer afternoon with inland areas reaching the mid to upper 70's and even at the beaches upper 50's. this sun sets at 752 and i will let you know how long this warming trend continues. stephanie: the city of san jose installed its first automated license plate cameras on the intersection of monterey road and kirchner avenue. they hope that this will reduce the number of traffic deaths. amanda introduces you to a mother who made it her mission to improve safety at an intersection where her own daughter was killed. >> this was my daughter, i have no idea who killed her. no idea, if we would've had cameras up we would've caught the cap -- caught the person who killed my daughter. amanda: she has spent the last year pushing for safety improvements at one of san jose's most dangerous

intersections. her demands have led to changes at monterey road and kerber avenue including the installation of four automated license plate readers on monday, part of a pilot program along with signs alerting drivers. last april heard the harder -- her daughter was in her wheelchair in the crosswalk when she was hit and left for dead. >> the only glimpse -- glimpse came from where? >> the shell gas station, the only camera that was working. amanda: police mark san jose's 28th traffic deaths stemming from an unsalted and debt -- hit-and-run case. the victim in that crash died tuesday in hospice care. this 11-year-old video from a nearby business was the only footage released at the time. here is shaw's mother after hearing about the new cameras. >> why didn't they do that 11 years ago? amanda: at a time where traffic

fatalities continue at record pace. they will see if this reduces the number of traffic crashes. privacy advocates are raising a problem about privacy concerns. >> no individuals are -- no profit -- no information is being captured they are adjusting -- taking pictures. amanda: some claim that this is success doubled to misuse and data beer -- data breach and suggesting one of the better privacy protections for police to retain no information at all when passing a vehicle that does not match a hotlist. we asked the city when the license plate readers would be fully functioning, there is no set date. in santa fe, abc 7 unit -- abc7news. stephanie: prosecutors have released more from the deadly shooting last month.

smiley martin made his first court appearance yesterday. prosecutors said that he used a full automatic selector switch to change a glock into a machine gun. six others died. martin and his brother will be back in court on tuesday. now to the war in ukraine, next week u.n. secretary general plans to meet the russian and ukrainian presidents separately as a russian commander says the real goal is to take full control of the country's southern and eastern regions, establishing a land bridge between russia and crimea. in mariupol, fighters and civilians remained surrounded by russian forces. russian forces will not storm it, but they will not allow supplies in either. the president remains defiant. >> after eight years of brutal war russia wanted to destroy our

state completely, deprive ukrainians of the right to life, no matter how fierce the battles are, there is no chance for death. everyone knows that. stephanie: new satellite images show a second mass grave outside of mariupol. hundreds of civilians may be buried there. the atrocities are just one of the reasons that one american flew overseas to help fight. he is a veteran from the bay area heading home after a month in ukraine. dan talked to him about his decision to go, his journey, and why he wishes he could have stayed longer. >> i am a am a maintenance man i support a lot of properties in san francisco. dan: kevin's employer would not let them take a leave of absence, so he burned a month vacation to serve with the ukrainian military. tell me about that decision to go to ukraine, why did you do it? dan: the way i saw it, the only

thing you can do against a bully is to punch him in the mouth. he is a retired army ranger and when russia invaded ukraine he expected an easy victory for the superpower, but it has been slow and painful. >> it just hurt me to keep watching it, and nobody was doing anything about it. we should have had boots on the ground before ukraine, before any russian troops went over the ukrainian border. dan: do you think that would've stopped russia from coming in? >> absolutely. dan: he flew to poland, got a rental car and tried to walk across the border into ukraine during a snowstorm. a guard stopped him. >> i said i am going to ukraine and he said you have to ride across the border in a vehicle, you cannot walk, so i just went to the stoplight right across the street and i just started knocking on people's car doors.

dan: a driver offered to take them to meet the ukrainian military and it was not long before he was headed for kyiv. they gave him a military, body armor, a rifle and a uniform, he added an american flag and met many foreigners fighting for ukraine. >> britain, ireland, portugal, and a guy came from australia. everywhere, germany, poland, it is an amazing thing how the world can really come together whenever it needs to. dan: he worked with a mostly spanish-speaking unit from peru and colombia. >> single file, staggered. extended line. dan: he did not want to go into the specifics of what he did. where you actually in the field in combat or were you doing training? >> we were doing a little bit of

tenderloin. the march and rally was organized by youth versus apocalypse, a group calling for environmental and climate justice for some of the bay area's most underserved communities. >> treasure island, a low income community of color have been suffering from radioactive contamination for years. cornell: they demand the cleanup of toxic waste dating back to the 1940's. >> we are asking for more -- remediation and justice to the overall area, for folks trying to build on top of soil that they already know is toxic. cornell: advocates were impressed that so many young people are getting involved. >> i am so proud and amazed that these kids showed up to show that they care about climate justice and all for bayview. cornell: the cleanup of hunters point is being done by the u.s. navy -- u.s. navy overseen by the epa.

housing prices continue to soar in the bay area with some reporting double-digit percentage increases over the past couple months. tim johns spoke to housing experts about what is driving this bike and one home buyers might see some relief. tim: coming as a surprise to no one, housing prices in the bay area are becoming increasingly out of we -- out of reach for more and more people. a new report from cillo says that some local homeowners are paying as much as 20% more on their mortgages just since january. >> that is not surprising at all. tim: todd david is the executive director of the housing action coalition. the problem with our high housing costs comes from a multitude of factors. >> these are the ramifications of the policy choices that we have chosen. tim: california and the bay area has built too little housing for

about 50 years. it has gotten so bad that we alone now account for half of the entire housing shortage in the u.s.. those statistics can be seen on the ground says a realtor. >> i have been in situations where the successful offer is 300 to 500,000 over asking. tim: the hot housing market means that buyers are facing dozens of other people all interested in the same property. he warns those trying to purchase a new place to have patience. >> it could take anywhere of -- anywhere first three to six months before you are successful. tim: for those hoping for some reprieve david says do not hold your breath. in order to fix the problem several things need to be done with changing zoning laws, expediting approval processes and building more affordable housing at the top. without them, we will be stuck with these problems for years to come.

>> we are just going to keep seeing the cost of housing go up. tim: in san francisco, tim johns. stephanie: a man from big bear lake in southern california had a big problem to deal with. the video starts with him walking up to some dumpsters, he checks it out to see what might be lurking in the trash containers, and then the bear pops his head up and things quickly turn. as you can tell, he took off running thinking the bear was going after him. it turns out it was the animal who ran off after getting spotted by the human. and now to some less scary animals. the biggest dog event in san francisco returns today. dogfest is back from 11:00 until 4:00 filled with carnival stylee kids. there will be a dog show and contest where you can cheer on your favorite furry friends as they take their turn on the

apartment where the suspect was located. christine: investigators did not identify the person friday night but said they found six guns including long guns, handguns, and ammunition. late friday they tweeted pictures of several of the weapons. >> people reared its ugly head in our community. christine: police identified raymond spencer as a person of interest in the case and said that they wanted to talk to him. friday night they said they were no longer looking for spencer as a person of interest. rapid gunfire abrupt in in this neighbor -- erupting in this neighborhood around 3:20. police warming the area surrounded by schools and government embassies as swat teams from building and building in search of an active shooter. this video shows police bringing an injured woman to safety. a child. people were seen running for

cover as neighbors were urged to shelter-in-place. schools going into lockdown. officers say they do not know what the shooter's motive was. stephanie: a terrifying close call, a truck driver in ohio narrowly missed hitting a school bus filled with children. [horn honking] the bus was stopped with its lights flashing and stop sign arm out as it was picking up kids earlier this week. this 80,000 pound tractor-trailer was going 45 miles an hour and was not able to stop when the driver started honking. a pickup truck on the others of the street backed up with just enough space for the trailer to maneuver around the bus and avoid hitting everyone. >> i had to do what i had to do to protect myself and the kids. it was one of those moments when

you realize things can happen in an instant. stephanie: the driver told police the brakes were out and he was able to stop a quarter of a mile down the road and the trailer is being inspected. they are the only growth -- group in the country still not eligible to receive a covid-19 vaccine but there is hope that the fda authorization for kids younger than five could come as soon as june. we spoke to a local clinic eagerly waiting. luz: the authorization for a covid-19 vaccine for children younger than five years old could be around the corner. for months, doctors at the golden gate pediatrics clinic in san francisco have been vaccinating children five and older, but now they are gearing up. 4000 other patients between four years old and six months. that is the age group that would qualify to get vaccinated. once the fda gives a green light. >> we will have our saturday

the 37th street overpass which has been renamed the juneteenth freedom underpass. it honors a new federal holiday that falls on june 19. it commemorates the end of slavery in the u.s.. in san francisco the newly renovated battery bluffs opens today. sitting on top the presidio parkway tunnels it covers six acres of open space including three overlooks with sweeping views of the golden gate, angel island, and alcatraz. there are 60,000 native and ornamental plants as well as the bluff's historic gun batteries which will open to visitors for the first time. >> we know that when we make spaces like this, waterfront spaces like this available and open to all people, it has a tremendous impact on our mental health, happiness, -- stephanie: the tunnel tops opens later this year. if you are a san francisco

month, abc 7 partnered with national geographic. there is a new mural part of geo's -- nat geo's planet possible project. here a behind-the-scenes look at its creation. ♪ >> when i walk by it it brings me joy and makes me happy, and i just love the colors. >> the mural is really kid friendly, i like it, it is playful, i like the turtle it kind of looks like crash from disney. they crushed it. ♪ >> my name is alice lee, i am a muralist and illustrator based in the san francisco bay area and i am super excited to be painting this mural on this wall. ♪ so this is day one of this two

week mural project, and i am feeling a combination of super excited and a little tiny bit nervous, but at the same time i am super psyched, especially for a brand like national geographic and for a cause that is very aligned with what i personally am really passionate about as well. right now we are at the very beginning stages of the mural. it was recently primed so you see it is a blue-collar and i just added my doodle grid on top of it. that allows me to later on i will be able to superimpose a tracing of my mural on to it, and then i can use the doodle grid as reference points. nat geo asked us to take a look at some of their photographs and pick one that spoke to us and that we could be inspired from. this wonderful photograph of a sea turtle, i felt that would be fun to draw and picked on such a busy corridor.

two major themes in my artwork and mural work are taking inspiration from nature and my own heritage as a chinese-american. i felt like this mural project where i was tasked with creating an ocean themed mural was a perfect alignment. i've included asian influenced textile patterns in the background, which are -- which is just a little way to add in my personal voice. today is day five of painting the mural, and we are starting to fill in the shapes, adding color, and you can see that the turtle is starting to take shape. i am starting to refine and add color with the help of a wonderful team of friends. day nine, i am really super excited that we are almost there, almost at the finish line, one of the most rewarding things has been connecting with the community and seeing how neighbors are feeling about it.
