this someone's home. it's absolutely gone. and this morning there are reports that russia has renewed and attacked the steel plant in mariupol, which is the last stronghold for ukrainians in that city. and the heaviest fighting throughout this conflict has been in the eastern part of the country, and we have seen videos circulating online showing the flames engulfing a hospital in the donbas region. and in donetsk more video circulating online showing a helicopter firing multiple projectiles over ukraine. a senior russian commander has revealed what russia's next steps are. their goals for the next phase of their invasion. he said it is to take over ukraine's southern territory and potentially a separatist region in moldova. it's one of the reasons why u.s. oficials say the next few weeks could be critical and they are in a race to arm and supply ukrainian fighters with additional weapons and ammunition in the midst of this fight.

the pentagon watching vladimir putin's next steps as this war seems to be reaching a turning point. >> thank you. now to new developments in the sherry papini fake kidnapping. her husband filing for divorce a few days after the mother of two pleaded guilty. good morning to you, mona. >> good morning. in the divorce documents filed this week her husband goes into detail about the mental toll her actions have taken on him and their two children. he seeks to separate what he claims are his assets from his estranged wife's. after standing by his wife for six years, sherry papini's husband keith has filed for divorce. making the move days after the 39-year-old pleaded guilty to faking her own kidnapping. in divorce documents filed wednesday keith papini asked for sole custody of their 9 and 7-year-old children to protect them, quote, from the negative

impact of their mother's notoriety. >> there will be questions as to whether he knew about it early on, whether he knew about it later on and diseased to help cover it up. >> reporter: since 2016, papini insisted she was kidnapped at gun point, held in captivity and tortured 22 days by two hispanic women. detectives discovering she was actually staying with an ex-boyfriend and harmed herself to cover up her lies. >> all we can do at the end of the day is right thing, and it is never too plate to do the rate thing. >> reporter: keith papini states the kids have learned their mother lied about her disappearance and haven't seen her since april 4. he is requesting they court give him possession of the home. >> this is a move by keith to try to establish that there is

in our doctor to break it down. just to point out, this is not me saying this. this is the study, dr. sutton. how did this study come to the conclusion there were no benefits to this? >> good morning. i have to say that we saw the intermittent fasting associated with decreased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline associated with dementia. this study follows a group of participants over a year and finds that what it does is it separates those 100 people in two groups, calorie restricted groups and one group time restricted to simulate intermittent fasting. at the end of the year both groups lost weight but, unfortunately, there was no significant difference between the weight loss which helps us to understand that calorie restriction in addition to time restriction or intermittent fasting probably doesn't have an added benefit.

>> people wouldn't be doing this if they didn't think it worked. what do you think explains the success stories we have seen from people? >> i believe these disappointing results don't mean you should throw the eating plan out. there are benefits. some can benefit from time restrictions because that helps you restrict your calorie intake by avoiding that heavy meal you may not need and low-value snacks. i think this can benefit some. >> what is an alternative to intermittent fasting? >> quality from both intermittent fasting and calorie restrictions are beneficial. focus on lifestyle changes. that includes maybe avoiding heavy meals early in the morning or late at night right before bed and the low value snacks by focusing on high value nutrition, remembering that food is fuel, and also exercise regularly. of course, talking to primary care financial physician to develop a plan best for you. >> we are looking at the study. dr. sutton, always a pleasure. talk to you soon. now to earth week on "gma." this morning we are getting to the bottom of reusable bags and

impact they have on the environment. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. we all have piles of these bags lying around the house, right? i know i do. while experts say they are certainly better than plastic, the question is this too much of a good thing? >> these are the ones in my car. >> reporter: from the trunk of your car to that one closet you have been meaning to clean out -- >> i have a lot of canvas bags. >> reporter: you are bound to find a few of those reusable bags lying around. >> if it's not reused, it's not fulfilling its purpose. one of the first things for the environment is this throwaway culture. you take something, use it, throw it into a landfill. >> reporter: big box retailers trendy shops and eateries making it hard to keep up churning out branded reusable bags and packaging, too.

they have become the greener alternative to single-use plastic bags, a symbol for sustainable living. many are made of cotton, which has its own impact. >> we can reduce environmental impact in one way but it causes a different environmental impact. you use a lot of water to grow cotton and often in some of these bags you have printing that is toxic. unfortunately, many of them are not really easily recyclable. >> reporter: is a study made headlines finding organic cotton tote bags needs to be used 20,000 times to offset the impact from its production. but dr. cohen says he still considers cotton the better option. >> this certainly got a fair amount of attention, but it sort of misses the point. cotton is a natural organic substance. you have to look at the entire life cycle of the good, not just how it's made, but what happens at the end of its life. >> reporter: in the end, there

leave it to tiktok to inspire us to cut down on food waste. take a look. >> whether it's banana peels, stale bread or coffee grounds, think twice before tossing that food according to the american journal of agriculture, americans throw out a third of the food they buy, costing consumers $1,800 every year. >> welcome back to scrappy cooking. >> reporter: with 1.8 million followers, author and influencer carly is changing the way we see food scraps. >> the zero waste scrappy movement is taking off because people are fired up about the state of our planet. we're thinking about the whole plant in itself rather than just one part that has been normalized to eat, and collectively reducing our food waste. something as simple as looking at your broccoli, we typically in north america throw out the stalk. instead of throwing it out, it's perfectly edible.

you can chop it up, stir fry it, blend it that a pesto and reimaging how you can eat these foods that are commonly ended up in our landfills. >> joining us is chris, the magazine's sustainable issue is out full of tips, tricks and recipes for food scraps. let's dig in. we saw on tiktok helping folks become more aware of food waste. you got some great tips for us. the first which is shop what you already have or at least know what you have before you go shopping. >> exactly. it might seem obvious, but look at what you have. you can find flavor and inspiration in the things that might already be in your home. in this case something a little bit unexpected. with that olive brine, it has salt, it has a little bit of sweetness and a lots of acidity. it's what you want to use in a marinade for protein like chicken or beef. adds so much flavor.

pickle brine also would work for a coleslaw, salad dressing. >> really cool. another great tip is favor the freezer. >> so your freezer does such a great job at storing food, right? it keeps things in a state of suspended animation. if you are overzealous at the farmers market to see things that haven't been there months and months, you can freeze them, put them on a baking sheet, let them get solid and put them in a resealable bag. something already frozen from the grocery store, we used frozen asparagus. it's a great way to stretch out peak season produce into a meal, easy to do on a week night. >> and also save the stems. we usually cut off the stems and trash them. you say you can keep them? >> such a shame. broccoli stem is so delicious. once you peel that outer bit of

skin, it is cool, crunchy, you can eat it raw, toss it into braises, soups, stews, stir fries, anything. so here we've got -- >> i smell it. >> we have all the broccoli in that kimchi fried rice. so those are kind of coins of the stem. as long as you cut them a little bit smaller than florets, they cook in the same amount of time all the vegetable. efit of usin- >> and more vegetable to eat. also you say ignore the imperfections. >> bruised isn't bad, okay? so when you have got peak berries, things of that sort, the clock is ticking, right? you though them in the back of the fridge, hope for the best. when things aren't looking camera ready, cook them. throw them into a compote or a jam. we did the slightly unconventional approach of

she showed up with a ring one day. we didn't know what was happening. next thing you know, she is married, has a baby. so we love the soft launch here. for the average dater, what is the key to a successful liftoff for the launch? >> look, people that are going to soft launch, they probably have big online lives and people that are following what they are doing. so for them it's all about efficiency and not having to make this big announcement, oh, i'm in a relationship, so they don't have to make a relationship saying, oh, i'm not in the relationship anymore. so to do it successfully, have the conversation with your partner before you soft launch, right? determine what the status of your relationship is, how you are going to post, and what photos you are going to post so that nobody gets their feelings hurt or bent out of shape. >> i don't know. my high school girlfriend launched her man from fresno, california, to 300 people. maybe the large following or a small following. we love it.
