welcome back a terrifying close call a truck driver in ohio narrowly missed hitting a school bus filled. children now the bus was stopped with its lights flashing and stop sign arm out as it was picking up kids earlier this week this 80,000 pound tractor trailer was going 45 miles per hour and wasn't able to stop that's when the driver started honking a pickup truck on the other side of the street backed up with just enough space for trailer to maneuver around the driver told police the brakes

owned by abc 7's parent company. disney is exploring that effort abc 7's spencer. focusing on this project here in the bay area. i can't wait to see this. this was what down in the santa cruz mountain. that's correct here. it's an amazing project. in fact, i'm going to start by showing you a look at a majestic grove the santa cruz mountains. vicente redwoods grove that a dedicated team of environmentalists is working to protect. even though the outer bark is charred see. up on my fingers a little bit. we're having leaves come out throughout throughout the branches for project manager susie petry and her colleagues. the send vicente living laboratory. the area was ravaged in 2020 when the czu fire roared through the santa cruz mountains, but while the destruction was painful, it's providing priceless lessons for how we can better manage, california forests to survive in the age of climate change. a lot of these trees were very damaged by the flames that passed through the property and the fire resilience.

are actually reemerging coming back to life. to help the larger fire resilient trees thrive crews are carefully thinning out brush and processing permanently dam. odds in eco-friendly air curtain burners, you're basically putting a ton of air into that firebox. so you're kind of super heating the material in there and getting it to burn a lot faster and cleaner. so we're in the shaded fuelbreak here, even though it's not really shaded because of the fire, but you can see about a hundred feet on either side of the road the forest changes redwoods program manager, justin. maryland says the clearing efforts have allowed the team to expand shaded fuel breaks across the preserve the brakes which are shaded by the canopy of larger trees are thinned closer to the ground to slow advancing flames their value can be seen around san vicente's horizon where lightly and heavily burned

areas stand side by side. garland says the improvements may ultimately allow for regularly scheduled prescribed burns to keep the forest fuel load in check. it would be disastrous to intentionally start. are out here now. so there's a lot of intermediate work of removing the fuels that have accumulated over decades. well the work at san vicente redwoods is helping protect the forest from the next major fire. that's only half the goal scores of workers and volunteers are also helping the forest regenerate teams from the save the redwoods league and other groups involved in managing. send vicente have helped replant seedlings while other researchers are paying close attention to plant species and their natural cycles fire resilient. herbs small flowers things like that cameras positioned on site are also providing a window into the wildlife that is steadily returning to the area helping us understand what's out here what's using this property? we also have a partnership with ucsc's puma project to help us understand how mountain lions are moving through the property and the region.

it's a living laboratory that's evolving with our understanding of the redwoods complex. system and the pressures like climate change fire management and drought and learning what it will take to best preserve this spectacular treasure for the future. now you may soon get a chance to get a close-up look for yourself a sections of the preserve are scheduled to open for the first time to the public this fall including the initial phase of the new trail. it's going to be awesome and let's hope they can pres. that area because it's just beautiful land. it really is stunning and now weather right now stunning too certainly looking for a segue. yes. i like that way. it's crazy out there right now. we've got wind speeds up to almost 30 miles per hour here in san francisco is breezy all around the area and it has warmed up significantly since yesterday. you can see the 24 hour temperature change shows a three to about 13 degree warm up around most of the area. here's a view from sutro tower over san francisco where it's currently 60 degrees 65 in oakland. we've got 70s at mountain view, san jose and santa clara 55 at half moon bay.
