reporter tara campbell has been following this story and joins us live tonight in the newsroom tara. yeah, jr. a few weeks ago. i spoke with a redwood city resident who is volunteering at the border at the time. she described it. as overwhelming and tonight you'll hear from a local nonprofit. also helping out describing the situation as unsustainable. you thousands of ukrainian refugees landing in? to mexico, but waiting to cross into the united states volunteers helping to provide everything from transportation and translations to food and shelter redwood city resident oya crashnik has been on the ground for several weeks. we spoke with her soon after her arrival. that's another ending chasing or chasing our tail trying to make sure that these people are have a place to sleep that's decently safe-ish the us is welcoming up

area. once again, we expect to see some fog forming along the coastline and some patchy fog around the bay of shoreline there and then tomorrow's high is about 60 and half moon bay 66 in san francisco around the bayshore line. look for highs of 70 in oakland 73 fremont, san mateo 72 down on the south bay 76 will be high in san jose inland. the east bay will be our warmest region with highs in the upper 70s to 80th antioch farther north fairfield will top out at 82 and up in the north bay. look for our sunny day with mild to warm conditions highest ranging from 76 in napa to 78 at santa rosa and on we go to the accuweather seven-day forecast notice. we're going to have an increase in clouds on tuesday. it'll become breezy and cooler temperatures are drop from a low 80s inland on monday to only mid 70s on tuesday, wednesday and thursday, but toward the end of the week. we'll see sky's getting a little bit sunnier and then by next weekend, we'll see a little bit of a warm up with temperatures climbing back into a more seasonal range for this time of year. upper 70s inland low 70s around

welcome back. we'll skiers are rejoicing this weekend with fresh snow in the sierra after a late season storm interstate 80 was cleared and plenty of time for a fun-filled weekend on the slopes people headed to palisades tahoe one of the popular spring skiing destinations. definitely not quiet. it was the lines were huge this morning. everybody. wanted to get up the hill and

lots of crowds. everybody was happy. resort was packed filled with people excited for some fresh powder earlier this week palisades tahoe announced it pushed back its closing date to may 15th. as we mark earth day some experts say that saving the world's forests could help reverse the damage of climate change this month's issue of national geographic owned by abc 7's parent company. disney is exploring that effort abc 7's spencer christian focused in on a forest project here in the bay area and and this is something it really is jr down in the santa cruz mountains those majestic forests. well, i have a look for you at majestic grove in that region the san vicente redwoods grove. at a dedicated team of environmentalists is working to protect. even though the outer bark is charred see. grab on my fingers a little bit we're having leaves come out throughout throughout the branches for project manager susie petry and her colleagues.

the send vicente redwoods are a living laboratory. the area was ravaged in 2020 when the czu fire roared through the santa cruz mountains, but while the destruction was painful is providing priceless lessons for how we can better manage, california forests to survive in the age of climate change. a lot of these trees were very damaged by the claims that pass through the property and the thigh resilience species are actually re-emerging coming back to life. to help the larger fire resilien are carefully thinning out brush and processing permanently damaged logs in eco-friendly air curtain burners your basically putting a ton of air into that firebox. so you're kind of super heating the material. fire and getting it to burn a lot faster and cleaner. so we're in the shaded fuel break here, even though it's not really shaded because of the fire, but you can see about a hundred feet on either side of

the road the forest changes redwoods program manager. justin garland says the clearing efforts have allowed the team to expand shaded fuel breaks across the preserve the brakes which are shaded by the canopy of larger trees are thinned closer to the ground to slow advancing flames their value can be seen around san vicente's horizon where lightly and heavily burned area stand side by side garland says the improvements may ultimately allow for regularly scheduled prescribed burns to keep the forest fuel load in check it would be disastrous to intentionally start a fire out here now, so tre's a lot of intermediate work of removing. fuels that have accumulated ovee redwoods is helping protect the forest from the next major fire. that's only half the goal scores of workers and volunteers are also helping the forest regenerate teams from the save the redwoods league and other groups involved in managing. send vicente have helped replant seedlings while other

researchers are paying close attention to plant species and their natural cycles fire resilient herbs small flowers things like that cameras positioned on site are also providing a window into the wildlife that is steadily returning to the area helping us understand what's out here. what's using this property? we also have a partnership with ucsc's puma project to help us understand how mountain lions are moving through the property and the region. it's a living laboratory that's evolving with our understanding of the redwoods complex ecosystem and the pressures like ime change fire management and drought and learning what it will take to best preserve this spectacular treasure for the future. it's a great project and you may soon get a chance for a close-up. look yourself as sections of the preserve are scheduled to open to the public for the first time since for the first time i should say this fall including the initial phase of the new trails. it's amazing. there's so much involved there. yeah, just to keep them in tip top shape. it really is it and it's so important these days because there's such a threat, you know

from the increasing wildfire. so yeah got to protect those redwoods, right? exactly. so let's take a quick look at what's happening with our weather here in the bay area. we're going to have mainly clear skies overnight a few passing. clouds as you look at the animation there maybe an area of or two of fog near the coaststay skies by about eight or nine o'clock tomorrow morning overnight lows will be mainly the mitch upper 40s highs tomorrow about 60 degrees that the coast mainly low seventies right around the bayshore line upper 70s. generally inland some locations. will top out at about 80 82 degrees. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast is going to be warm again on monday then on tuesday got a few more more clouds coming to the sky so tuesday. say thursday will be a bit cooler and breezier. in fact pretty gusty in the middle of the week. but by the end of the week, i'll start warming up again next saturday right back into that. sort of seasonal range of upper 70s and about 70 around the bayshore line and near 60 on the coast pleasant week ahead. we could use some rain, but don't see any coming our way when we had the rain there were people who wanted the sun and
