good evening. thank you for joining us. for the first time we're getting a sense of the panic and shock felt by alec baldwin and the cast and crew of "rust" in the moments after the shooting of cinematographer helena hutchens and director joe souza. the newly released video takes us through the aftermath and includes baldwin's initial interview with police and his reaction to hutchins' death. here's abc news kaylee hartung. >> reporter: real-life horror on the set of a hollywood film. >> medical staff! >> reporter: a massive release of never before seen videos. >> mr. baldwin, who's the director on the scene? >> the guy who was shot. >> reporter: revealing the confusion and chaos on the set of "rust." >> gunshot underneath the right arm. this one's priority.

>> reporter: after the shooting that killed an up-and-coming cinematographer and injured the director. tonight, we see star alec baldwin from rehearsals to the immediate aftermath on the scene. >> you were in the room when the lady -- >> i was the one with the gun, yeah. >> reporter: inside the interrogation room as he learns the worst. >> and you have some very unfortunate news. >> what? >> she didn't make it. >> no! >> that's a gun! >> reporter: now a closer look at what happened, who handled the weapon -- >> sorry, sorry. >> you're all right, just relax. >> reporter: safety concerns on set. >> i think there was complacency, disorganization. there's a degree of neglect. whether that reaches a criminal level is up to the district pat >> reporter: in the six months since the tragedy that killed 42-year-old halyna hutchins, the world has been wondering exactly

what happened on the bonanza creek ranch in new mexico. for 21 days the western was plagued with complaints. it came to a head. >> that day i did exactly what i've done every day on that movie. >> reporter: star and producer alec baldwin was preparing for one of his biggest scenes, a shoot-out inside this wooden church. talking about that day back in december with abc's george stephanopoulos. >> i'm handed the gun, "this is a cold gun." cold gun means there's no charge. there could be dummy rounds. >> reporter: in the newly released video, baldwin rehearsing the scene. clearly practicing how to draw his gun. the crew broke for lunch. when rehearsals resumed that afternoon, the camera was not rolling when the gun went off. the first 911 call about the same in just after 1:45 p.m. >> 911, what's the location of your emergency? >> we need -- we need an ambulance out -- out at bow none intra creek ranch right now,

we've got two people shot on a movie set accidentally. >> reporter: the first sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene around 2:00. the film's medics already tending to hutchins and director joel souza. >> gunshot underneath the right arm. >> reporter: both hit by the same bullet. hunt chins is critically injured. life flight is on the way. in the initial confusion, the body camera footage shows baldwin waiting to talk with deputies. >> we're getting these guys treated, we're securing the scene, then we'll get with you guys. >> how is it going, sir? my understanding is you were in the room when the lady -- >> i was holding the gun, yeah. >> okay, all righty. >> what do you need? >> i know your name. >> call you back, okay? >> reporter: meanwhile, another lieutenant has found hannah gutierrez reed, the film's armorer in charge of the weapons on set. >> that's the gun. >> okay. >> reporter: the 24-year-old and the movie's assistant director,

dave halls, both cooperating amid the confusion. >> dave, do you have those rounds i gave you? >> what? no. they're on the cart. >> are they? >> i don't know. >> who did you give them to? >> i gave them back to you. >> reporter: gutierrez reed clearly emotional. >> are these the rounds here? >> so -- okay. um -- >> rounds here. >> there should -- okay, no -- so this is the one, i'm pretty sure. that's the one. and i -- okay. sorry. >> you're okay, just relax, just relax. >> so scared, i'm sorry. >> you're all right, just relax. >> so here's the box that i got them out of. >> okay, leave them right there, okay? relax. i just need you to relax. okay, what i'm going to have you do is sit in here, okay? >> am i arrested? >> you're not arrested. the door's going to stay open. since you're the armorer, they're going to want to talk to you more than anybody, okay?

>> can i please have that water? >> yes. >> oh my god. >> reporter: as more time passes, baldwin and the crew repeatedly ask about their injured colleagues. very worried about hutchins. >> you all right? >> no, i'm not all right. i'm worried about her. >> yeah, well -- >> she's in the bird. >> she's going. >> that's a good sign. >> that's a good sign. okay. >> stabilizing her, alec. he's doing okay. >> he is? what's her story? >> a little bit rougher. >> it was the shoulder, though? >> on joel? >> on halyna. >> it went through her right underarm, exit point on her back shoulder blade. >> across her body? >> it went through. >> my god. >> reporter: eventually deputies photograph baldwin in costume and keep the clothes as evidence.

they also ask him and gutierrez reed to go to the station to talk. >> what's your job there with them? >> i'm the armorer. or at least i was. >> reporter: gutierrez reed told investigators she loaded the gun before lunch with dummy rounds. >> i didn't really check it too much after lunch, you know, because -- because it was already locked up and everything at lunch. but yeah, checked it and put in the last round. >> reporter: she says the casings look similar to live ammunition, but -- >> there's always, like, a chance, you know, safety to be compromised. and that's the issue. and that's what i'm supposed to watch out for on set. >> reporter: in this blurred video, one sheriff's deputy talks with director joel souza in his hospital bed as he described the moment he was shot. >> a very loud bang. and it felt like somebody kicked me in the shoulder. >> reporter: medical teams

removed the bullet from souza and gave it to the deputy. >> big bullet, man. >> reporter: at the sheriff's office, after being read his miranda rights, baldwin hasne question. >> so my only question is, am i being charged with something? >> no, we're just interviewing. >> reporter: the actor consistently saying the gun should not have had live ammunition in it. >> i should have an empty gun. >> reporter: investigators are able to show him the bullet pulled from souza's shoulder. >> that's a bullet. >> right. >> as i suspected, somebody put a live round in the gun. >> reporter: baldwin describing how he drew the gun when it discharged. >> i took the gun, showing him, i'm going to go like this, like this, like this, cock and turn, bang, it went off the first time. >> it was your first time after lunch? >> the first time we were shooting that shot, rehearsing for that shot. >> reporter: that matching what he told abc news in december. >> i take the gun, i start to cock the gun, i'm not going to pull the trigger. i cock the gun, can you see

that, can you see that? i let go of the hammer of the gun, the gun goes off. i let go of the hammer of the gun, the gun goes off. >> reporter: it's at the end of the police interview that baldwin gets the heartbreaking update. halyna hutchins has died. >> i do have some very unfortunate news to tell you. >> what? >> she didn't make it. >> no! >> yeah. >> i'm going to go call my wife. >> reporter: these photos, some of the first images that went public after the shooting show baldwin making that call. in the months since the shooting, multiple civil lawsuits have been filed against the production company, against baldwin as a producer. just last week, state regulators fined the production over $130,000. their reports saying the crew willfully violated safety rules. >> i think there was complacency, disorganization. they were not adhering to proper

safety protocols. and industry standards, to be honest. >> reporter: the sheriff says his investigation could still be weeks or months away from completion. whether there will be any criminal charges is still uncertain. and the biggest question remains, how did a live bullet get on set? >> that was one of the key questions we were focusing on in the investigation. right now nobody's come forward and admitted to brigham anything to the set. >> reporter: the hutchins family saying monday in a statement, they were surprised by the decision of the santa fe county sheriff's office to release such a large amount of evidence, given that the investigation is still ongoing and active. >> the authorities say that it was in response to an open records request, that they were asked for it and they want to be transparent and they're releasing it. but it's odd that they're releasing this much information right now. >> it's very complicated, it's very convoluted. i think we're doing the best that we can with the time frame

♪ poaching is pushing rhinos closer and closer to extinction.

the animals are valued for their majestic horns which are very popular on the black market. now a group of conservationists is trying a radical idea they hope will make rhinos less vulnerable and save the species. abc's matt gutman is in south africa. >> reporter: we are running through the south african bush. that helicopter thundering overhead. somewhere in the bush is where they immobilized that rhino. we're going to follow the helicopter there. there it is. we see her. here at the kruger national park in south africa, 80% of the rhino population has been killed by poachers in less than a decade. just moments earlier, veterinarian peter bask guarded this female rhino from a helicopter. he's not poaching. he's trying to save this mega herbivore. >> if you didn't dehorn this animal, what would be her fate? >> high risk of being poached.

the bigger the horns, the more return the poachers get on the risks they take trying to poach her. so she's a high-risk animal like this with the horn. >> reporter: in markets in china and vietnam, rhino horn fetches about $10,000 a pound with some believing it's an aphrodisiac. is she going to suffer not having this horn? >> like getting your nailed cut. >> reporter: they remove the horn and begin the task of tagging this animal. the team's done this hundreds of times. without her horn, the rhino is less vulnerable to poachers. moments later she's back on her feet. these are drastic measures, but with rhinos facing possible extinction within five to ten years, conservationists say they are necessary. >> we try our best. >> reporter: deniko is the head rangers of the southern section of the park. she says dehorning has stopped poaching in her region the past month. >> so what happens when you hear about poaching?

you hear another rhino is killed and another rhino is killed? >> it pains my heart. it pains my heart because it ket to be done in our country. people just understand that these animals -- they've got value in the society. >> reporter: kruger's chief pilot david has seen hundreds of rhino dehornings and deaths. >> we're at this stage because we are on the brink of failure. this is the last thing that we can do to try and save the species. >> a dead rhino is a crime scene? >> a dead rhino like that is a crime scene in south africa. >> reporter: most of the time the only witnesses to the crime are baby rhinos, orphaned by poachers. david's most delicate missions, find those calfs. >> we've taken orphaned calfs

into the wild. we lift the seats up, lie them flat. it takes six men to put it into the back. >> reporter: care for the wild is the rhino sanctuary where 300-pound babies are most often airlifted. it has been home to over 100 orphaned rhinos whose parents were killed by poachers. >> sounds like it's only getting worse, you're getting more and more orphaned rhinos? >> yeah. if i look back over the last ten years, it was a massive shock. i would say the worst in my lifetime, from my time in the endangered species protection unit where i was a captain in the police. i've never seen anything like that. >> reporter: she and her team hand-rear these animals with trial and error. they spend most of their days preparing milk, weighing the animals, taking baby zebras and rhino calfs for walks.

>> incredible thing about these rhinos is that they really do need their mother's milk. when they're orphaned at this age, even though they're fed every two hours, they still can't get the nutrition they need. >> reporter: just three months ago, what petra calls a miracle happened here. a pair of very special rhinos. this is the miracle baby? >> this is the miracle baby. >> reporter: they're the first of a kind. becoming the first-ever or phand rhino to mate and bear a calf. three months ago little blizzie was born. >> isn't that incredible, that you have a mother who was so wounded, so maimed and traumatized. then you have this perfect baby. >> every time i see her, this is a new start for rhinos. for us in the world, if you ask why do we have to conserve rhinos, why is the rhino

important? do you feel this? >> reporter: farther down the track, there was something else petra wanted to show us. this big fellow. >> that's the dad. >> this is so interesting. out of all these rhinos, he's really the hero right now. >> he's the hero. and he was also one of the orphans that came in. >> reporter: storm, as he's called, one of those rhinos airlifted to care for wild. at that point, they didn't know whether a rhino could learn rhino behavior without other rhino adults. the miracle is that he had no parents to teach him how to be a bull rhino. >> no. >> he had nature. and it worked. >> reporter: it worked better than anyone thought. petra now hoping there could be more miracle babies along the way. >> these two are females that we think are also pregnant with his babies. >> it went from no orphans ever having babies, to possibly four in a short period of time. >> reporter: these births giving conservationists something they
