johnny depp. what we are seeing is they both harmed each other but what type of harm and is there a legal recourse for that. >> the sordid trial has captivated viewers streaming it online for three weeks. the most explosive testimony has come from depp himself. depp and his attorneys painting heard has the aggressors instigating arguments that often became physical. >> you got hit. i am sorry i hit you like this. but i did not punch you. i did not deck you. i was hitting you. you are such a baby. grow the [ bleep ] up johnny. >> i did start a physical fight. >> depp testifying heard extinguished a cigarette on his face. >> we went to the emergency

room. the doctor asked what happened. i lied to him. i said that i had smashed it. >> why would you lie about that? >> i did not want to get her in trouble. >> heard's attorney claims depp's memory is unreliable because he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol to the point of blacking out. >> the first and the best evidence is johnny depp himself and willingness to admit he had a problem and his reflection of that didn't extend to the part of him abusing amber heard in any way, shape or form. >> heard's lawyers showed text messages in which he uses violent language texting let's burn amber. >> you say let's drown her before we burn her. >> depp said it was a reference to a monty python joke and apologized to the jury for the language used in his text and

denied hitting or abusing the 35-year-old, claiming she was the actual aggressor. >> she kicked the bathroom door into my head. >> the pair met in 2009 working together on the film the rum diary. both actors were in relationships with other people. >> that moment was -- it felt like something i shouldn't be feeling. i think there was something in the kiss in the shower that was very real. >> after depp parted ways with his long time partner and mother of his children, depp and heard married in 2015 but the marriage lasted 15 months with heard obtaining a restraining order against depp. the couple reached a $7 million settlement which was finalized

in january of 2017. the actor is releasing this statement. our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile but always bound by love. neither party has made false accusations for financial gain and never any intent of physical or emotional harm. heard wrote the "washington post" opinion piece two years later. the defamation trial is a dark chapter for an a-list actor who built his career on playing flawed but sensitive characters but off camera depp struggled. >> i felt really uncomfortable in my own skin. i could not get a handle on it, you know. yeah. i took to poisoning myself. which is really stupid. >> he was arrested twice in the 90s. once in 1994 for trashing a new york city hotel room that he was sharing with his then girlfriend

kate moss and again in 1999 for threatening paparazzi in london with a wood plank. charges were dropped in both incidents. >> it is very difficult for me to sort of think of myself in terms of celebrity. i don't see it. i think of a guy with a strange job, you know. >> now depp's days as captain jack sparrow are over. but for as ugly and unpredictable as the saga has been, the door might not be closed on his or heard's career. >> nothing in show business or in life is completely inevitable. both parties could go on to great success. one thing johnny has been able to draw on is the sympathy of his audience and he calls on that after all of the stuff comes out. we await. >> amber heard is expected to take the stand next week.
