they are sharing their story, saying their trip to the bay area isn't one they will soon forget. that couple visiting from atlanta was targeted in a string of robbed -- armed robberies in oakland. those responsible are still on the loose. the couple we spoke with was in town for their grandmother's 91st birthday and the terrifying encounter saw the thieves steal off $40,000 worth of goods. tim johns shares their story you will see only on abc 7. >> while peace has definitely been broken, my heart is hurting, but i'm grateful to be alive. >> what was meant to be a happy day turned into a terrifying scenario for this couple. they were going to celebrate their grandmother's 91st birthday. hours before the party, the

couple was robbed at gunpoint while walking to their car. >> the only thing i was waiting on was the shot. i saw the guns. i knew that saturday was going to be the day that i died. reporter: stalwart says that as they were walking out of a restaurant, they found themselves surrounded by three men. two of them with guns. >> to me, it was agreed just to be in broad daylight and you pull up when people are just walking around having a good time. tim: between the two of them, the thieves stole around $40,000 worth of goods. items including cash, regina's purse, and the jewelry. in spite of the loss, stalwart told me he was determined for that not to ruin the reason he came to town in the first place, his grandmother. >> those guys took a lot of

items from me but they left me with my life and that was the most beautiful thing, to still show up at the party. tim: it is not just the personal loss and trauma. it has also left them with a negative view of the bay area. after becoming the victim of crime himself, he is urging city leaders to do more to keep residents safe. >> you don't have adequate security or policing, you don't have surveillance, cameras, and not only that, your laws are so strict that if you are not going to protect us, you are not allowing me to protect myself. tim: those sentiments were also said by his wife, regina. >> with what happened to us, i can't come back. tim: the couple notes despite the traumatic experience, they were moved by the outpouring of

support received from others nearby. one man stayed with them for hours after the incident to make. . sure they were ok. >> we had people come up to us, placing money into our hands and telling us they were sorry for what happened and that they don't want us to have that impression of their city. tim: they say they don't know what their future holds. they plan to take it one day at a time. >> my peace, my heart, they have been violated. personally, i don't know what to expect when i get home. tim: in san francisco, tim johns, abc 7 news. dion: we are hearing today from the family of a rookie san jose police officer who died from a fentanyl overdose. fentanyl toxicity contributed to the death of 24-year-old dejon packer.

packer was found dead at a home in milpitas. family members sent us a statement reading, there was no indication that the john -- dejon was involved in illicit activity. he joined to make a difference and did not want the police to be seen as a negative entity. they also told us they wanted packer to be remembered someone who brought good to this world. the mother of san francisco district attorney has died. d.a. boo dean says that he was able to make it to new york this morning to say his goodbyes. she was a member of the radical group, the weather underground, and spent 22 years in prison in connection with a fatal bank robbery. she went on to earn a doctorate and taught at a -- as a professor at the university of

columbia in new york. to developing news out of ukraine where civilians are being evacuated out of a steel plant in mariupol. a temporary cease-fire is allowing some to escape that steel plant. some 3000 ukrainian forces and citizens are reportedly sheltering their right now. the evacuation was negotiated by the united nations and red cross. house speaker nancy pelosi has traveled to keep to meet with resident zelenskyy. -- traveled to kyiv to meet with president zelenskyy. >> i stand with ukraine and our nato allies. dion: barbara lee was also part of the delegation. pelosi is the highest ranking u.s. official to visit ukraine since the invasion. in the bay area of forestville

woman is teaming up with a champion sled dog race or to save dogs left in ukraine. terry campbell tells us this unlikely duo has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. reporter: the face of one of dozens of dogs rescued in ukraine by one of the world's best sled dog racers. taking to social media to offer help. >> i posted my facebook information. if somebody needs my help, i have spectral -- a special proxy. i just go the next day. reporter: igor and a team of close friends are evacuating dogs left in the shadows of war. >> i saw a dog without legs after a bombing. we tried to save his life but we lost him. reporter: they have managed to

save roughly 250 dogs and cats while delivering tons of food and supplies to shelters and individuals in need. >> we will be back. we will be back with dogs, cats, kits, and supplies because they need it. reporter: and helping to keep these efforts going is one bay area woman with a big heart for dogs. >> i had a business for 25 years in san francisco, a doggy daycare and i just love dogs. reporter: one test saw what was going on in ukraine, her instinct was to get over there. but a battle with chronic lyme disease nearly stole her life. >> i experienced an illness not long ago and it prevents me from doing search and rescue work anymore. terry: organizing a fundraiser to fund the fuel to get these dogs over the border and into safe shelter.

back to us tonight and told us no arrests have been made. investigators are working to identify those involved and say that the sfpd stunt driving response unit is conducting investigations for each location. new details on a crash that killed a pedestrian walking in east san jose. that crash happened last night near interstate 680. the victim was not at a crosswalk and was struck by two suv's. the driver had just exited 680 and was emerging onto capital when he struck the person who was then hit by the second suv. she is the 17th pedestrian to be killed this year in san jose. city leaders have been struggling to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. a member of the santa clara county board of supervisors wants to greenlight up to $3 million for a local planned
