delegation arrived to kyiv feeling a mix of great sorrow and great pride. the visit comes as congress takes up a new request for military and humanitarian aid for ukraine and as a cease-fire briefly re-opened for some civilians to escape. in the bombed, ravaged southeastern city of mariupol, new video posted by city officials and filmed by the far right azov battalion appears to show ukrainian civilians safely escaping after weeks of war and at the steel plant defended by ukrainian forces women and children seen evacuating sunday in video released by russia's defense ministry. as many as 1,000 civilians believed still holed up inside along with ukrainian fighters. president zelenskyy saying about 100 civilians safely cleared those front lines thanks to a cease-fire and the efforts of the red cross and the united nations. once over ukrainian officials say russian troops resumed bombing that steel plant. abc's marcus moore with a woman who says her husband died defending mariupol and

biden will visit ukrainian parents and children in romania and slovakia who have been displaced by russia's war. that visit set to take place over mother's day weekend. mona. >> justin, thank you. millions of people in the plains are bracing for more severe weather today as one town in kansas tries to clean up from a tornado. the twister with winds up to 160 miles per hour roared through friday damaging more than 1,000 buildings in a suburb of wichita. roofs were flying into the air, but remarkably only four people were injured. the path of destruction stretched for 13 miles, and three young storm chasers are being mourned after a deadly car crash. they were between 19 and 22 years old and were studying meteorology at the university of oklahoma. they were driving back to school after chasing tornadoes when their car hydroplaned. we turn now to the economy and new concern about rising gas prices. this time it's the price that truckers are paying, and it could all affect us. this morning, diesel fuel prices hitting an all-time high. now $5.30 per gallon, up more than $2 from last year.

>> just to fill up this truck, i'd say about a year ago was less than, i don't know, about $80 to fill it up, and now it's over 200. >> reporter: the record prices could fuel higher inflation putting more strain on american wallets. that's because diesel is essential to the supply chain. nearly all heavy-duty trucks and nearly all trains use diesel. so do most cargo ships, and with shipping companies now facing the extra cost, consumers can expect to face higher prices on nearly everything. even energy costs could be affected. coal is transported to power plants in diesel-powered trains. diesel engines also power most agricultural equipment, which means prices on those consumer goods could rise gradually but for truckers, the pain is immediate. >> this load for simple, i made that load for $2,300. now i'm doing it for 1,900. >> reporter: in some parts of the country, diesel prices now top $6 per gallon and considering many big rigs only get about six miles to the gallon, some drivers are now paying more than $1 per mile on

the highway. >> i'm losing money, you know, and to be honest, i don't know what i'm going to do. >> reporter: meanwhile, oil companies are reporting rising profits. chevron posting a $6.3 billion profit last week, nearly four times what the company reported this time last year. democrats are promising legislation that would allow the federal trade commission to monitor prices and go after oil companies. >> they are hoarding the windfall while keeping prices high for people at the pump. >> as for regular gas, those prices are up 6 cents in the last week. several suicides on a u.s. aircraft carrier are prompting action from the navy. seven sailors assigned to the "uss george washington" have died since july. three of them died during one week last month. in response the navy will now move hundreds of sailors off the ship. service members have complained about terrible working conditions on the ship, which has been docked in virginia for repairs. a mysterious hepatitis outbreak among children is spreading. at least ten states are now reporting an increase in cases

of severe hepatitis in children. one death has been confirmed in wisconsin, and two kids in minnesota needed liver transplants. doctors are looking for a cause. they're investigating a type of adenovirus found in many of the children. now to the urgent for an escaped inmate and a corrections officer in alabama. a reward is now being offered in the case. as we learn more about the officer, her mother is now speaking out. these are the latest images of escaped murder suspect casey white now on the run after escaping from an alabama jail. also still missing, a corrections officer investigators say may have helped him escape. >> really the question we have lingering is, did she do that willingly, or was she somehow coerced or forced to help him? >> reporter: investigators say the officer, vicky white, who is not related to casey white, escorted casey to the courthouse friday for what was described as a mental health evaluation, but no such appointment was scheduled. by late afternoon both were missing. vicky's patrol car was found in

a parking lot at a nearby shopping center, and her phone went straight to voice mail. >> it's just really hitting right now that, you know, it's like a nightmare. you hope you wake up, and it's over. >> reporter: vicky's mother tells our huntsville station vicky never mentioned casey, and she doesn't know if vicky was coerced. >> all i know is what we see on tv and what little they're telling us. he could hurt her easy, and that's what keeps me awake at night. >> reporter: the sheriff says vicky was a model employee even winning awards, and she was planning to retire. in fact, friday was her final day on the job. >> and i can tell you that every employee in this office is shocked that she's missing and that this has happened. >> reporter: in 2020 authorities charged casey with two counts of capital murder for stabbing a woman. prosecutors say he later confessed to being a hit man. now as the search intensifies, investigators are combing through casey's phone calls and looking into his previous interactions for clues on where

airtag device was moving with her. >> it was first detected with her around 7:09 p.m., and we got the notification at about 11:33 p.m. >> reporter: madison clicked on the notification and saw a map outlining everywhere they had walked in the previous four hours. >> it showed the first destination where it was detected with her, and then it basically draws a line and makes the connections. >> reporter: the family says they frantically shook out their clothes and bags in the parking lot then jumped into their truck. driving back to the hotel, madison's phone showed the airtag was still back in their parking lot. it had apparently fallen out of their belongings. >> i had seen videos of other people warning people about them and what they were basically. >> reporter: apple's airtag is meant to be attached to things frequently lost like your keys or wallet, but authorities say some criminals have used the devices to follow people, even
