investigation stand in this series of armed robberies? most notably the couple we are talking about from georgia. >> unfortunate incident, it doesn't represent who we are as a city, the city of oakland, a concern about people who come visit and victimized in this way. we are following up on leads related to this robbery, we are looking for a video in the area to help us to divide the vehicle and individuals involved in the robbery and we are following up on leads from earlier robberies that may be connected to this particular group that targeted these individuals during their -- late saturday night. >> they could have been hurt, guns pressed against their heads. they lost $40,000 but they kept their lives and they are safe. an indication this was random or if they were targeted? what is your suspicion on that? >> we believe it was random in

the sense that they were selected specifically for the items that they were carrying. there was a group of individuals targeting several individuals throughout the city during that particular evening. we are investigating a couple of robberies who believe are connected to these individuals. we are seeking the help of the community if they have any information that may help us identify the vehicle or the description of the individuals that may have been involved, that would be helpful. we are working to link this robbery with other robberies that happened during the 24 hour period saturday night into sunday morning. >> they were robbed in daylight in a well-traveled area. why are we seeing these kinds of outrageous crimes right now that seem to be increasing and what and the department need to do to keep citizens and visitors safe? >> we know that there are individuals out there who are

always seeking to find people who are unsuspecting, who may not be aware of their surroundings. particularly carrying sensitive things and not aware of their surroundings. recognize that in late-night hours, particularly in certain areas in need to be cognizant of vehicles and those who may be watching you. we are increasing the presence in particular around the area, we had offices around that area earlier, but unfortunately we were not present when this took place. >> i know you will follow-up with us as soon as an arrest is made. thank you for coming on with us today. >> a school shakeup tonight in the bay area at a district already in turmoil. facing the claimant -- declining enrollment, a board member says she is stepping down. we sat down with her to talk

about why it is so hard to be a board member in oakland. >> schoolboard member gonzalez told me she had two goals when she started this job to invest in teachers by giving them more training and development and to organize parents to become more involved in the education of their children. instead she found a school board that spent too much time distracted on issues that have little to do with how students in oakland are doing academically. >> who want to live in a community where people are treated with dignity and respect. >> she is candid about her abrupt departure. >> your concern is that most schools are not meeting student's academic needs. >> students are not getting their needs met, that has been hurting our enrollment for 20 years now. >> over 47% of highschoolers are

below grade level in reading, 53% of elementary school students are not reading at grade level with nearly 60% of students below grade level in math. she insists that the board spent too much time on things that have nothing. to do academic needs this is not the first board member to complain. jody london third for 12 years. >> when the school district is caught up in teacher strikes it since parents away and if we are concerned about ensuring we have a good education system for students in oakland for a long time to come, we need to buckle down and figure out how we are going to educate kids. >> gonzalez also talked about the challenges of working with the teachers union. >> it is not the teachers, it is with the union? >> one of the challenges i see

is that our union has consistently resisted any efforts to incentivize or attract teachers in hard to fill subjects. chemistry, physics, math, languages, particularly special education. they do not believe in differentiating salaries, they believed that everybody is a teacher, everybody should be paid the same. >> we reached out to the oakland education association and here is what they told us. gonzalez will not be missed, we hope they know director will listen to and keep their commitments to district six students and families rather than closing their schools. what a some school board members told me is that we have lost the ability to agree to disagree. they claimed that if you disagree, you are often told you are wrong and end of discussion. you are labeled a racist.

she says it is hard to make any progress for students under those specific conditions. >> very complicated. stanford nurses are excited to return to work after approving a new contract over the weekend. the union says 83% of members approve the contract. the deal includes a 7% wage increase this year along with another 5% next april. the additional week of vacation, nurses went on strike at the children's hospital. san jose's growing struggle to prevent bicyclists from being killed on the streets. the kills -- vehicles hit and killed two people, 17 pedestrian deaths in san jose. nearly reaching the total number of all of last year. they pandemic easing, more people are out and about.

-- the pandemic is easing, more people are out and about. what it will take to make those streets safer. >> the streets of san jose are not as safe as they should be. >> things are not going well. >> 29 fatal collisions and 31 total deaths, halfway to the record high of 60 fatalities in one year. we were at 16 deaths at this time last year. >> it is frustrating and it is surprising. we have seen this uptick in fatal and severe crashes and it is something that authorities all over the nation is struggling to deal with. >> two more lives were lost along city streets, the first right here on capitol avenue near 680. a pedestrian was hit by a car. on sunday a bicyclist was killed by crossing cross -- crossing the expressway.
