>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> the only way we can defend our rights as being in the street. >> abortion-rights supporters taking to the streets. it comes after a draft supreme court opinion was leaked to showing a majority of justices are poised to overturn roe v. wade. thank you for joining us get i am dan ashley. ama: i am ama daetz paid we have reaction in the bay area. we begin with morgan norwood. morgan: belted from the steps of the supreme court, tries of joy and -- cries of joy and shock and outrage. politico published a leaked first draft opinion suggesting

the days of a federally guaranteed right to an abortion are numbered. >> this decision is quite a radical decision. morgan: the draft opinion triggering a wave of reaction from coast to coast. in mississippi, the attorney general arguing that the decision should be the state's to make. >> this law has been sitting with the united states supreme court for over 50 years. as a rule of law, it needs to be returned to the states. morgan: the governor signing a bill banning abortion at six weeks before many women even know that they are pregnant. one woman said she was told by one clinic she had to drive to kansas in order to >> get an appointment. >>she is like we cannot do that here but i can help you find a different facility. it will be in a different state. morgan: when it comes to the leak, a spokesman for the supreme court confirming its authenticity but added it does not represent a decision by the court or the final position of any member.

john roberts issuing a statement, calling the leak a singular and egregious reach of trust that is an affront to the court. but insisting the work of the court will not be affected in any way. roberts ordered the marshal of the court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak. >> the court should tune out the bad faith noise and feel completely free to do their job. they should follow the facts and the law wherever that leads. >> the republicans have been working towards this day for decades. they have been out there plotting, carefully cultivating a supreme court justice -- morgan: morgan norwood, abc news, los angeles. dan: gavin newsom will be in los angeles, where he says he will be discussing "recent attacks on choice across the country and california's commitment to safeguarding reproductive freedom." we will bring you his remarks on

abc 7 and abc7news.com. ama: what began as a peaceful protest has gotten on ruling in los angeles. a citywide tactical alert has been issued by the lapd. about 400 people gathered in front of a federal courthouse downtown to protest the possible overturning of roe v. wade and has the protests continued into the night, the lapd says some of those who were in attendance at the rally attempted to take the intersection and some of the crowd through rocks and bottles -- threw rocks and bottles at officers. one officer is injured although the extent is unknown. push back against the leaked supreme court opinion is also being seen in the bay area. locally, abortion-rights activists held protests in several cities today. tim johns has been keeping track of several of them and joins us from the newsroom with more. tim: san francisco, oakland, san jose, all among the bay area cities holding protests today. several people in attendance at those rallies telling me they

are not just fighting for abortion-rights but for women's rights as a whole. on the streets of the bay area, feelings of disbelief. >> i was immediately devastated. i could not believe it. >> and anger. >> it's a war on women. tim: following the bombshell release of a report suggesting roe v. wade could be overturned. protests are wrapping in several cities across our region on tuesday from san francisco to san jose to oakland. many protesters saying they view the news as an attack not just on abortion-rights it also as a wider assault on women's right -- women's rights in general. >> it's about the collective. it's about health care. it is about privacy. it is about making a decision for your own life. tim: calling on not just women to take to the streets. >> it's important for people of all genders to be out here and supporting the cause because it is a human class.

tim: others explaining they hope it serves as a wake-up call for voters ahead of the november midterm elections. >> it feels like our country is moving backwards at a time when we should be moving forwards. tim: no matter what reason people were out for, one common theme seems to collect -- connect them all, and unrelenting promise to stand up for the rights they believe are being trampled on. >> the only way we can defend our rights is by being in the streets. we are here in solidarity and there's hundreds of demonstrations taking place and they will grow. tim: several protesters plan on organizing even more events in the coming days and weeks ahead of the final supreme court decision. we expect that it later in the summer. tim johns, abc 7 news. dan: thanks. the catholic church is responding positively to the leaked cream court draft. when the news broke, the san francisco archbishop tweeted his support and spoke with me about why he is pleased to be at

this moment in history. >> our goal is to make abortion unthinkable. because it is a very violent act and i think women need to have the support necessary to give birth and give this child the right to life. all women should have that means possible. dan: you know that is not realistic. that has not happened the last 50 years since roe v. wade was passed. there will still be a significant percentage of the population that believes abortion should be allowed and they will pursue abortions. >> the women need to be given this support. it might seem unrealistic now but it's because of the cultural mentality that has set in. ama: a climber with a message took to the sales force building today, scaling all the way to the top. j.r. stone spoke with that young man who says he did it because

he is against abortion and wants the world to know. >> i never thought i would fall. j.r.: the 22-year-old is describing what it was like to climb to the top of the salesforce tower in san francisco, scaling the outside without any harnesses. saying this, which was an illegal act, was about getting his antiabortion message out there. >> i believe it is women's choice, but the choice starts at conception. adoption over abortion. that's really what i'm trying to spread. j.r.: he says this climb was about raising money for antiabortion groups who believe we will see more extreme measures like this going forward. >> i think there are many, many people all across america that are concerned that they are not being heard, not being recognized by their elected officials. j.r.: as the young student was climbing this building, many were just focused on the feat, a person climbing a building that stands 1070 feet high with no

safety devices connected to them. >> i was so scared. i was afraid he was going to fall down on live tv. [laughter] j.r.: he calls himself the pro-life spider-man and says he had planned for this for the past month, a fact that the supreme draft opinion -- supreme court draft opinion was released motivated him even more. some took pictures and video of him from inside the building. he says he enjoyed that and says the actual climb was not as hard as it looked. >> finally, i got up there and i could reach right over it and that was just a blessing. the cool thing about this is there was rest every 10 feet. in my mind, i was not climbing 1000 foot -- a 1000 foot stage gripper. i was only climbing 10 feet, 100 times. or however many times it is. j.r.: getting to the top of the salesforce tower -- he was given

ama: new tonight, growing concern over a potential supreme court shockwave following monday's leaked draft opinion. there is worry about what other landmark rulings could be targeted next, with many questioning impacts to marriage between same-sex couples and consensual sexual acts. amanda del castillo spoke with legal experts and lgbtq advocates. amanda: the 98 page draft opinion leaked monday and first published by politico certainly still front and center. justice alito's text noting nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion but many are not convinced. carolyn weisinger reacting with alarm, saying if roe v. wade could be overturned, it will not stop there. >> if that is possible, the fight on voters rights is up, the fight on mixed marriages is definitely up. the fight on any type of right and protection you have is

definitely up and everyone needs to pay attention. amanda: buried in the draft, criticism of lawrence b texas, which legalized sodomy, and oberg feld b hodges, legalizing marriage between same-sex couples. kathleen morris also helped write the legal complaint when san francisco challenged california's ban on marriage between same-sex couples. >> they go after -- and that leaves open the possibility of criminalizing the lgbtqi community across the board. so it does feel as if there is an effort to dismantle the gains that have been made in order to get back to a time that is an aussie and harriet time, pre-19 625. amanda: a supreme court shockwave if these landmark rulings were to be reversed, rights the draft claims are not deeply rooted in history. >> it's challenging to think

about how this could be unraveled based on people's attachment to what is normal, what is american, what is acceptable. amanda: vice president kamala harris on tuesday addressing the potential impacts to freedoms and what she calls the fundamental right to privacy. vp harris: when the right to privacy is attacked, anyone in our country may face a future where the government can interfere with their personal decisions. not just women. anyone. amanda: an ethnic studies professor says change is possible at the ballot box this november. >> once the policy is passed and it cannot be undone and what we are seeing is that is absolutely not true, depending on who represents you. amanda: i am amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. ama: moving -- dan: moving on, a

political powerhouse passed away. he would break racial barriers for asian americans. at first being elected mayor of san jose and then serving as the south bay's congressman for almost 20 years. he worked for two presidents, bill clinton and george w. bush. during an interview with the legacy project, he talked about keeping a positive feeling. >> i have been very fortunate in being able to keep it upbeat -- an upbeat spirit and being tenacious while getting the job done. dan: san jose's airport bears his name as does the transportation institute at san jose strait and a south bay freeway as well. he was 90 years old. ama: a proposition that would legalize online sports betting in california appears to be headed for the november ballot. the three big online sports betting companies backing the measure say they have the

signatures to qualify. if passed, the bay area would get $97 million for homeless housing and mental health programs, they say. tribal casinos are pushing for their own initiative for in person sports betting at their casinos. >> are concerned with their measure is that it violates the historical decades-old sovereignty granted to tribes by california voters to be the operators of gaming in the state of california. ama: if both propositions pass, a court would have to decide which one to implement. dan: san francisco's chinese community is coming together this week to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the chinese exclusion act, which banned all immigrants from china. >> the 10,000 reported incidents of antiaging hate and discrimination that's been targeted towards our community definitely has its roots in the racism and xenophobia that led to the chinese exclusion act. dan: on friday, a ceremonial wreath will be laid at the
