>> this is abc7news. >> east bay roads are now back to normal after highway 24 was shut down for several hours during the commute. a man was on the freeway. police say he was suffering from a mental health crisis. tim johns has more on how the situation unfolded and its impact on commuters. >> it was an afternoon of chaos for several hours on wednesday. around one: 45, contra man stann the center divide. upon making contact, police say the man appeared to be suffering from a mental health crisis.

demands, which led to an altercation. onlookers helped the officer detain the man. in the south bay, a man with a knife forced an elementary school to go under lockdown today. it happened outside empire gardens elementary school in san jose around 11:00 this morning. neighbors were also told to stay inside. no students were in danger. parents were called to pick up their children after police detained the man. one mother says -- one child says she was scared. her teacher gave instructions. >> she told us to stay at our seats and be quiet. >> i started praying to god. you see the stories from columbine. you don't know what to expect. it is easy to panic, to get frazzled. ama: police took the man into custody nearly three hours after getting to the scene. he will receive a mental health assessment and could face charges. now to the developing news, the

future of roe v. wade is in question after an unprecedented week of a supreme court draft opinion. the issue of abortion rights is now top of mind for many ahead of the midterm elections. alex presha has more from washington. reporter: an investigation set to get underway over the late draft opinion to overturn roe v. wade, sending shock waves the country. john robertson calling on the supreme court's marshall to investigate the leak. the draft opinion was authored by justice samuel alito, who wrote roe v. wade must be overruled and that the 1973 ruling was egregiously wrong from the start. the chief justice confirmed the authenticity of the leaked document first published by politico, but insisted it was just a first draft and not a final opinion of the justices. president biden is describing the opinion as a radical decision, warning if the draft becomes law, it could impact other freedoms. pres. biden: what happens when

coronavirus headlines, for the first time in months, but the daily hospital admission levels and new covid related deaths in the u.s. are projected to increase over the next four weeks, according to forecast models used by the cdc. anthony j blinken has tested positive for covid-19. he is reportedly experiencing mild symptoms. the white house press secretary says blinken is not considered a close contact of the president. in the bay area, another high school is seeing an increase in cases. at least 60 los gatos high school students have tested positive in the last two weeks. today at 4:00 p.m., we asked our special correspondent for his take on what is next for the bay area considering the projections anecdotes about outbreaks. >> i think it is possible to expect a slight increase in hospitalizations. we have crossed the 5% test positivity rate. what we have to be realistic.

ama: chapelle was not hurt and continued with the show. the suspect is being held on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. there is more concern in solano county after at least three additional bear sightings in vacaville today. a neighborhood was closed for part of the day as a bear was up a tree. j.r. stone spoke with neighbors and a bear expert. j.r.: that video and this one is all new, recorded wednesday morning in vacaville, just a half-mile from where there were road closures due to monday's bear siding. >> this is a time of year when the cubs from last year, called yearlings, are going to be dispersing from their mother. you have families just like this in bear country. j.r.: while bears in vacaville may sound crazy, the california department of fish and wildlife confirmed that bears have been known to frequent some hillsides

in northern solano county. a ring camera recorded this bear in vacaville on wednesday too, four miles away in the browns valley neighborhood. the nonprofit group bear league has seen an additional video showing a larger bear and believes there may be several from the hills and outside of town now in vacaville. >> to have the bigger bear in the same area would almost tell me that we have two cubs and a mother. j.r.: she says that they are in this shot was likely attracted to the garbage cans, and that trash needs to be secured. you need to be territorial if a bear comes on your property. these are black bears, even though many are brown, and no black bear has ever killed a human in california, nevada, or oregon. >> make sure they do not feel welcome. yell at them, "get out of here." you can take a golf ball sized
